BULLY-PROOF OUR SCHOOLS It is reported that as many as 57% of South African students have been bullied at some time during their highschool careers. When one considers that we have 2.2 million schoolgoing children in this country, those percentages translate into truly staggering numbers. But what drives a child to victimise another? Are certain children more likely to become bullies, or to be bullied? Gail Dore, a family counsellor who tackles this complex subject in her recently published book Bully-Proof, has successfully implemented anti-bullying campaigns at a number of schools in Gauteng. According to her bullies tend to move towards acquiring an elevated status among their peers and crave the power that comes with that status. “Establishing themselves as the ‘top dog’ or ‘queen bee’ always means bullying others into submission and creating a power base from which to operate,” she explains. “Children who stand out in some way, either because they have physical differences, display a specific talent or ability, or lack confidence or social skills, are more likely to attract the attention of a bully than their more self-reliant peers. “However,” she points out, “No child is safe from being bullied. Bullies will almost always ‘test the water’ and try it on practically anyone they suspect will offer little resistance. If a bully is in the mood to pick on someone, any child who just happens to be in the vicinity can become a target. The reaction a bully gets from a potential target will determine whether the bullying continues and escalates or stops right there.” But, according to Dore, the most dangerous side of bullying is that it very rarely happens in private. Bullying is a spectator sport in which the victim is publicly humiliated. This produces strong feelings of shame and most victims blame themselves. ‘If I were bigger, stronger, smarter, prettier, more articulate, more able-bodied, etc., this wouldn’t be happening to me.’ When a victim feels that he or she is somehow responsible for the abuse, it is painfully difficult to tell someone else about it.

“What’s more, children who are present during an incident of bullying, and do nothing to try to stop it are, and should be seen as being, every bit as culpable* as the bully: “In the words of author and philosopher Edmund Burke, ‘The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil, is for good men to do nothing.’ Of course, this is easy to say when a school has a policy on bullying that protects informers from retaliation (a counterattack the bully) and guarantees that every report will be taken seriously and investigated. In schools where this is not the case, things get a little more complicated.” “Children who witness an incident of bullying are often very upset by it. They’re caught up in a moral dilemma. Should they intervene and risk becoming a target themselves? Should they side with the bully not to be seen as a ‘goody-two-shoes’? Should they report it and risk being labelled a snitch? These, and many more questions, tend to run through the minds of onlookers and often result in a kind of ‘analysis paralysis’, where they end up doing nothing at all. The bigger the group of onlookers, the more likely they are to fall prey to the so-called ‘bystander effect’ – the expectation that someone else will or should step forward and intervene.” The bully’s whole objective is to impress the audience with his or her powe. “If the onlookers respond positively by joining in, laughing or yelling encouragement, the bully has succeeded. Even silence from the onlookers will be seen as non-verbal support. If, however, the onlookers turn to the bully and make it clear that they’re unimpressed, bullying tends to stop immediately.” Onlookers, therefore, wield considerable power in the continuation of bullying. “This is where a shift in the culture of a school – from one which was conducive to bullying to one where mutual respect is a dominating value – has the biggest effect. Where the majority of the children are against it, bullying is less likely to occur and is quickly stopped if it does.” (*Culpable means that the bystanders are behaving as badly as the bully, if they do nothing to stop the bullying.)

SECTION B: SUMMARY QUESTION 2 You have been the victim of cyberbullying and have decided to give advice to other teenagers that might find themselves in the same position. Read the extract (TEXT C) below and write a list of SEVEN ways to deal with cyberbullying. INSTRUCTIONS: 1. List SEVEN points in full sentences using NO MORE than 70 words. 2. Number your sentences from 1 to 7. 3. Write ONE point per sentence. 4. Use your own words as far as possible. 5. Indicate the number of words you have used in brackets at the end of your summary. TEXT C

The aim of cyberbullying is to annoy, upset or confuse the person who is being targeted, so that they react emotionally. Do not reply to anything that has been said or retaliate by doing the same thing back. Saying something nasty back or posting something humiliating in revenge may make matters worse or even get you into trouble. Screenshots are the best way for you to report an instance of cyberbullying. Record the date and time and keep a record of it on your computer. Most social media sites want to help you feel safe online, so they have a lot of built-in tools to keep you safe. Make sure you block the person from your social media accounts. You may not feel it at the time, but cyberbullying affects you in different ways. If you are experiencing cyberbullying from somebody you go to school with, report it to a teacher. If somebody is threatening you, giving out your personal information or making you fear for your safety, contact the police. Limit your social media time to a few hours a day. That way, the bullying won’t feel constant, and you can take a break from the online world to look after yourself. You wouldn’t talk to random people on the street, so why do it online? People may not always be who they say they are. Keep your social media privacy settings high and do not connect with anybody you do not know offline. It’s a good idea to limit the number of personal photos and information you post online. Make sure to always keep passwords secure and change them regularly. Nasty C is the one of the hotest artists on the African continent at the moment. He was voted the Sunday Times Generation Next’s Coolest Local Music Star. He said, “I know what the youth of today are going through.” You are officially the Coolest Local Music Start in Mzansi, have that sunk in yet? It’s really awesome! More than anything, it lets me know that I am doing the right thing. It is nice to know that if you work hard, you will be recognised. What was your biggest challenge? Self-confidence and self-esteem were two things I lacked. I had a lot of insecurities. I was lucky that I could escape into my music and it opened doors for me. So on those days when I wasn’t fond of myself, I would look around me and say: “Well, people see something in me and maybe I can see it in myself too.” I realised self-confidence comes from within. Do you have heroes? Yeah. Bob Proctor. He educated people about the power of the mind and helping yourself. The second is US rapper Young Thug. He is the same person he was when he was broke. Money hasn’t changed him. Adapted from: Sunday Times 3 June 2018.
