Spoken Text 1 – Question 1 Radio Announcer: Researchers have been conducting well-being surveys for quite some time, and

some interesting results have been identified. In the studio with me today is Professor Roger Connolly, who has come in specifically to tell us about this research. Good morning, Professor Connolly – welcome to the program.

Professor: Good morning, Louise. Thank you for the opportunity to explain the findings of

this important research. Radio Announcer: Can you begin by giving our listeners an introduction to the well-being surveys? Professor: Yes, certainly. The Australian Wellbeing Index has been conducted twice a year

over the last 15 years and involves more than 60 000 participants. The latest instalment of one of Australia’s largest wellbeing surveys has found that besides genetics, there are three simple indicators of a happy life. Financial security, a sense of purpose in life and good personal relationships – these make up the ‘golden triangle’ of happiness. But beyond the ‘golden triangle’ of happiness, the researchers made some other surprising findings.

Radio Announcer: Oh? Can you elaborate? Professor: Yes, there are five more indicators of happiness according to the survey. But let’s

start at the beginning with the ‘golden triangle’. The first one I mentioned was financial security. While money does not make us happy, a lack of it makes us miserable. Wellbeing rises – up to an annual salary of about $100 000 a year, at which point its healing power drops off dramatically. The second one I mentioned was a sense of purpose in life. People are happiest when they are active, and when they have a sense of purpose. Volunteers are amongst the happiest people, though conscripts are not. And the last one in the ‘golden triangle’ is relationships. Being part of an intimate relationship is the most vital component of wellbeing. Pets are no substitutes for human beings.

Radio Announcer: Oh, pet lovers won’t be too happy about that. Professor: Nevertheless, that’s what the research has uncovered. Let’s start thinking about

social media now. While there was no difference in happiness between people who spent no time on social media, compared with those who spent an hour a day, researchers said moderation appeared to be the key. Those of us who used social media for just 30 minutes a day were the only group to report happiness above the normal range.

Radio Announcer: And what do you attribute that to, Professor? Professor: Well, there’s been a surprising and continuing increase in the levels of teenage

contentment since 2007 – that’s the year that social media came of age. It may very well be the case that social media is allowing them a sense of community, a sense of connection with one another which was more difficult for them to achieve prior to that era.

Radio Announcer: Right – so social media, although in moderation, is the first of the extra five

indicators after the ‘golden triangle’. What are the other four? Professor: We found that dads are happier than men without children, but the happiness of

mums is about the same as for women without children. We think this could be because family was the greatest source of contentment and happiness for men throughout their lives, whereas women were able to maintain social connections beyond the family unit. Not only that, but those parents who had regular contact with their mother and mother-in-law reported being happier overall as well.

Another surprising finding was that good health is a far less powerful predictor

than expected. Provided that declining health is slow, our in-built genetic resilience compensates for that, and our general mood level stays the same.

Golden oldies are the happiest. This may go part of the way to explaining why

Australians over the age of 55 were the most contented cohort, while the least contented were informal carers of sick or disabled family members. Their general level of mood happiness came at the bottom of the index, along with prisoners and homeless children.

Radio Announcer: How very interesting. So that leaves us with one last indicator? Professor: Yes, that’s right. Where we live in Australia has little impact on our happiness,

although there are slight variances across the country. Tasmania came out as the happiest state in the nation, whereas Western Australia had the lowest wellbeing score, just above New South Wales. Those of us who live in rural and regional areas tend to be the happiest Australians, suggesting that Tasmanians might be happiest because of the state’s low population and because many Tasmanians live outside cities.

Radio Announcer: Well, thank you, Professor Roger Connolly. That was most informative. We’ll

have a short musical break, then we’ll take some calls from listeners who are further interested in exploring this important topic.

Spoken Text 2 – Question 2

Melbourne

Victoria has recorded its highest total migration of people from interstate in over 40 years, as reported by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Almost a third of the 9 300 people who moved to Victoria came from New South Wales, while around 2 100 were from South Australia. A large number of people also moved from Western Australia and Queensland to Victoria. By the middle of this century Melbourne’s population is expected to hit between eight million and nine million people. The Australian Bureau of Statistics figures did not reveal if Melbourne being named the world’s most liveable city had anything to do with the influx of people. According to the British magazine, The Economist, Melbourne has topped the liveability rankings for the fifth year in a row. Each of the cities chosen is assigned a rating of 30 factors across five categories: stability; healthcare; culture and environment; education; and infrastructure. Each factor in a city is then rated as acceptable, tolerable, uncomfortable, undesirable or intolerable, to reach a score out of 100. Melbourne this year scored 97.5 marks out of 100, including full marks for infrastructure. Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said: ‘In a very competitive tourism or education market, this becomes a very important selling point for Melbourne.’ But the Lord Mayor also noted that the city had problems with road congestion. He has previously encouraged Melbournians to use public transport rather than cars. Town planner Adam Terrell has stated that The Economist report only served to highlight how much ‘liveability’ varied across the city. ‘We need to focus on improving the liveability of outer areas and allow more people to live in inner areas,’ said Mr Terrell. He also believes that much of Melbourne is becoming increasingly expensive to live in, and the challenge is to share this liveability by finding homes for new residents that they can afford. Emma King, the Chief Executive of the Victorian Council of Social Services said ‘the ranking ignored the high number of people living in areas of entrenched disadvantage.’ She added that ‘inner city Melbourne is an attractive proposition for employers who use this survey to appeal to international employees, but the reality is very different for people who can’t afford to live where most of the services are.’ While Melbourne ranked well in The Economist survey, the city has much to do regarding maximising access to jobs and making sure that it remains a liveable city for everyone by providing more affordable housing.

Question 3  Read the passage below and use it to answer, in ENGLISH, the questions that follow it.

The Maglev Train

Japan’s state-of-the-art maglev train has set a new world speed record in a test run near Mount Fuji, smashing through the 600 kilometre per hour mark (km/hr). The seven-car maglev train – short for magnetic levitation – hit a top speed of 603 km/hr. The new record came less than a week after the company recorded a top speed of 590 km/hr. The maglev hovers 10 centimetres above the tracks and is propelled by electrically charged magnets. About 200 train buffs gathered to witness the record-setting run, with the crowd cheering as the train broke through the 600 km/hr mark. ‘It gave me chills. I really want to ride on the train,’ an elderly woman told the public broadcaster as the carriage rocketed past her. ‘It’s as if I witnessed a new page in history.’ Yasukazu Endo, who heads the maglev test centre southwest of Tokyo, said: ‘The faster the train runs, the more stable it becomes – I think the quality of the train ride has improved’. Japan Rail wants to have a train in service by 2027 on the route between Tokyo and the central city of Nagoya – a distance of 286 km. The service, which will run at a top speed of 500 km/hr, is expected to connect the two cities in only 40 minutes, less than half the present journey time on Japan’s already speedy bullet trains. By 2045, maglev trains are expected to link Tokyo and Osaka in just one hour and seven minutes, slashing the journey time in half. However, construction costs for the dedicated lines are astronomical. They are estimated at nearly $100 billion for the stretch to Nagoya, with more than 80 per cent of the route expected to go through costly tunnels. Japan is looking to sell its bullet and maglev train systems overseas, with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe acting as a travelling salesman in his bid to revive the Japanese economy partly through infrastructure exports such as the maglev train technology. He has already visited the United States, where he touted the technology for a high-speed rail link between New York and Washington. Last year, Mr Abe took the US ambassador to Japan, Caroline Kennedy, on a test ride. ‘This technology is something that will bring great benefits to Japan and hopefully the United States one day,’ Ms Kennedy said. Japan started its study on the maglev train system as a national project in 1962 and succeeded in running at a speed of 60 km/hr a decade later. It is now travelling at ten times that original speed.

Question 4 Read the passage below and use it to answer, in ENGLISH, the questions that follow it.

Great Barrier Reef Australia’s Great Barrier Reef seems indestructible from afar: its 2 600 kilometre long clusters of corals are even visible from outer space. But on closer examination, the story loses some of its beauty. The reef, along with the multi-billion dollar tourist industry it supports, could be extinct by 2050. Rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are causing oceans to warm, bleaching the reef’s corals to death. Coral bleaching occurs when corals, stressed by warming water, expel the symbiotic algae, which provide necessary nutrients. As a result, the corals turn colourless and their calcium skeletons get exposed. Unless the water cools, death is not far behind. Bleaching has been observed on the Great Barrier Reef since 1982, with five percent of it permanently damaged. ‘As time goes on and carbon dioxide increases, the likelihood of mass bleaching goes ever higher,’ says Charlie Vernon, former head of the Australian Institute of Marine Science. Considered one of the seven natural wonders of the world, the reef is home to one-third of the world’s soft corals, as well as more than 1 500 species of fish and six of the world’s seven marine sea turtle species. ‘Coral reefs contain at least a quarter of the ocean’s biodiversity – if these die, there will be a chain reaction affecting most other ecosystems in the region,’ says Vernon. ‘The only thing that will save coral reefs is to drastically slow the rate of increase of atmospheric carbon dioxide.’ But not everyone is convinced. Professor Ian Plimer, Professor of Mining Geology at the University of Adelaide, is a climate change sceptic. He accuses those who forecast the reef’s demise as using a scare campaign, and says there’s no reason to believe the reef won’t survive. ‘Climates have always changed – corals adapt, as do humans and every other organism,’ he says. ‘The Great Barrier Reef has survived many environmental disasters as the history of coral reef bleaching shows.’ He also stressed that carbon dioxide is not the villain. ‘Carbon dioxide is the food of life. Without carbon dioxide, we don’t have plants. And if we don’t have plants, we don’t have animals,’ he says. ‘We’ve had reefs around for 542 million years during periods of time when it was much colder or much hotter – and when we had much higher carbon dioxide contents in the atmosphere. I have absolutely no worries about the Great Barrier Reef.’ However, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, the government agency that manages the reef, is taking a more moderate view. As part of a six-year action plan currently underway, it has taken steps to mitigate those threats and protect sensitive areas. Among these steps are partnering with management agencies to fill knowledge gaps, working with the tourism industry to ensure their operations are sustainable and helping communities to reduce their emissions. Question 4 continues.
