*Prepositions*   Definition: A preposition is a word that usually comes before a noun or pronoun to express a relationship to another word or group of words. A preposition is a word such as in, on, of, for, or by that usually comes before a noun or pronoun and its modifiers to form a prepositional phrase. Some examples of prepositional phrases are in the water, off the deep end, and toward them. The noun or pronoun in such phrases (water, end, them) is called the object of the preposition.

Examples: We walked up the stairs. I ran around the park. I put my pen on the table. Note: You can find a listing of the most common prepositions on page 4 of your yellow walrus parts of speech handbook.

Practice! Draw a parenthesis around each prepositional phrase and write “prep” over the preposition.

Example: I hate it when we have to run up the hill.

1. Nancy walked to the store.

2. Edison kicked the ball between the goalposts.

3. Davor shot the ball in the goal.

4. Selena played the piece on the piano.

5. Ruben shot the ball through the net.

6. Omri looked across the room.

7. Joaquin skated toward the trees.

8. Joshua leaded against the wall.

9. Shaman jumped over the bushes.

10. Tristen drove past the other car.

" Early finisher: draw a star next to the ob ject of the prepos it i on in each of these sentences.

Put it all together! Identify the nouns (underline), pronoun (P), verb (draw a box), adjective (circle &

arrow), adverb (squiggly box and arrow), prepositional phrase (parathenses) and preposition (prep). My students are awesome scholars. They are diligently completing their scrumptious Study Guides for their exam.

If  you  can  fit  it  into  this  phrase  to  make  sense,  then  it  is  probably  a  preposition:  Try  it  out!      The squirrel ran ________the tree.
