Participation Assignment

Tell me the strength of your paper and the weakness, and how you think you can solve the weakness.

Page 4: English 1301 11 th week

Most Frequent Issues in Introduction Do you accurately (and convincingly) identify the audience and purpose?

Do you provide sufficient amount of contextual information? (i.e. publication data)

Do you have a solid thesis statement at the end of the paragraph?

Do you begin with a general statement (FYW articulates it as “Shared Context”)? The best way to begin your introduction is to provide a

sentence (maximum 2 sentences, but make it as short as possible) what an author of the article is concerned.

Structure of Introduction Provide a sentence regarding the subject matter of the article.

How does technology interact with language in the era of globalism? One may argue that a technological advancement, such as the invention of the Internet, accelerates the dominance of English and diminishes minor languages.

Shift your focus to the rhetoric as you may introduce the article. i.e. In “Everyone Speaks Text Message,” Tina Rosenberg argues that this is not true,

and to make such a counterintuitive argument, she tactfully deploys various types of rhetorical strategies.

Identify the purpose and audience. i.e. She mainly discusses Traore and his native language, N’ko as an example of how

technology in fact helps languages to survive. Since published in New York Times, Rosenberg intends the article to be read by XYZ

Thesis statement

Individual work

Take out a piece of paper and put your name. Evaluate your introduction according to what we have just

saw. If you have grader’s feedback, also consult with it. Diagnose your issues. And write down a few sentences that you need to work out.

10 mins.

Most Frequent Issues in a Body Paragraph

Do you have a clear topic sentence? Does it have a rhetorical choice? Does it state what the rhetorical

choice do?

Do you have enough textual evidence? Does it correspond and demonstrate your choice of rhetorical

choice sufficiently? Do you quote correctly?

Is your analysis rhetorical analysis? Or content analysis? Does your analysis refer back to the audience and

purpose? Is your analysis specific enough?

Structure of a body paragraphTopic sentence

Introduce a rhetorical choice you discuss in the paragraph and very briefly explain how it works.

EvidenceIntroduce evidence of a rhetorical choice. Make sure you

do NOT throw a quote as an independent sentence. You need to properly introduce the quote.

Page 11: English 1301 11 th week

Structure of a body paragraph Analysis

Remember, you pick a quote as an example of author’s rhetorical choice, so that your analysis needs to focus on how it works.

i.e. Here, anecdote allows the audience to be emotionally attached to Traore since even though it takes place in an entirely different cultural context, the death of a familial member is something that the audience can empathize with. This is particularly effective since the audience is educated but not an expert of article’s subject matter, that is to say, anecdote’s emotional appeal is more effective than, for example, a logical appeal. Thus, by making the audience emotionally attached to Traore, Rosenberg can persuasively show the usefulness of technology.

Individual work

Now, please do the same thing with one body paragraph. Evaluate your introduction according to what we have just

saw. If you have grader’s feedback, also consult with it. Diagnose your issues. And write down a few sentences that you need to work out.

Assignment for Next WeekBA7: Revision Plan (Due 4/12)Objective: To demonstrate your ability to apply

principles of revision to your own writingPurpose: In BA6, you identified the elements

that needed revision in someone else’s paper. In this assignment, you will do the same thing for your paper.

Page 14: English 1301 11 th week

BA7 Description: First, write a short summary of the strengths and weaknesses of your

current draft. Using instructor feedback, peer critiques, and your own analysis, identify the specific elements that work well for your intended reader and those that do not.

Next, write a plan of action. For your plan of action, begin by identifying three specific areas or elements from your draft that you intend to revise and explain why you chose each one. Then, using the recommendations from chapters 6 (see pp. 118-124) and 10 from First-Year Writing and chapter 4 of the St. Martin’s Handbook, explain the steps you will take to revise each one. For example, if a particular paragraph is too vague for your reader, what are you going to have to do to make it more specific? If your topic sentences do not represent the main idea of each body paragraph, what will you do in order to better understand the main idea of each paragraph prior to revising each topic sentence?

This should be submitted in an essay of 500-650 words.

How to Evaluate feedbacksEach feedback is valuable resource for you to

identify the problemsHowever, sometimes you get conflicting feedbacks

for your paper. If you do, look closely what each has to say and try

to find a common ground between the two (or more).

If you cannot figure out what the feedback means especially by your peer, go with instructor’s feedback.

Assignment for Next WeekCopy and paste your original introduction.Revise your introduction under your original one. Be ready to explain what kind of revision you

make and how it improves your introduction. If your change is minimum, you need to justify

why.Be cautious, changing a lot doesn’t necessarily

make your introduction better.
