MESA/STEM Center Director Congratulations to Sue Tappero on her retirement. Sue began her career as MESA Director in 1995. She has transformed the MESA Center from a small closet to the wonderful STEM Center it is now.

She has also been the recipient of NSF grants to provide more academic enrichment to students including the PREP and the Energy Academy which this upcoming school year will be the ES 15/15L courses. Thanks so much to Sue for all her work in support of our STEM students.

Congratulation, Kelli Horner, for being selected as the tenure-track MESA/STEM Center Director. Thanks so much for supporting all our students and running their home away from home!

Student Clubs Come join one of the clubs: Engineering Society (ES), Engineering Abroad Club (EAC), Robotics Club (RC), Engineering K-12 Outreach Club (EOC), Women in Science and Engineering (WISE), Latinos United at Cabrillo in Engineering and Science (LUCES), Engineers Holding the Future; Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE); Bike Co-op, and Sustainability Club. Check out the STEM Student Club web site below for details and contact information. www.cabrillo.edu/servies/stem/Student_Clubs.html

Robotics Club

Takashi Tamasu, Arturo Cejudo, Fritz Billingsley, Allee Smallwood, Zoe Frei, and Kylie Roberson Last year the club competed in the NASA Swarmathon’s virtual competition. The Club wrote the best virtual code and beat out a field of 23 colleges and four-year universities. This year the club competed in the physical competition at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Their system had two bugs that they could not correct during the competition because it was against the rules. According to Mike Matera, Club faculty advisor, “It was an amazing experience. Allee and Kylie my two lead programmers, are applying for NASA fellowships. The Swarmathon sponsored ‘talk to a NASA engineer’ events and the entire group attended every one.” Sustainabilty Clubs/Committee If you are interested in making Cabrillo and the world a more sustainable place, you can join the student club, Sustainability Council, or attend the college-wide Sustainability and Climate Planning Committee. See greensteps.cabrillo.org or contact Karen Groppi at [email protected]

SHIPE Five students from Cabrillo’s student chapter of Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) attended the annual conference in Seattle in November 2016.

Andrew Marquez, Isabel Corpus, Antonio Hernandez, Jonathon Jacques, Ivan Ayala WISE During the Spring 2017 semester, female engineering students attended the Women in Engineering conference at SJSU and the SWE (Society of Women Engineers) Speed Mentoring workshop at Ohlone College. Under Ashleigh Ballas’s new leadership, the club will develop a community of women to engage in the professional world of science and engineering.

Engineering Abroad Ten engineering students along with Karl and Jo-Ann and two TAs (Brandon Faria and Hayley Graves) traveled to Guatemala in January 2017 for an engineering experience and cultural exploration. The students designed a water storage supply system to expand the village of Vuelta

Grande’s water supply. The students on the 2017 excursion were Aaron, Andrew, Ashleigh, Caroline, Keenan, Margi, Melissa, Mitasha, Thay, and Tryston.
