Food City and KZ 106 Thank Talley Road First Responders

As KZ 106 deejay Kelly McCoy reported the news of the Woodmore Elementary School bus crash on Monday November 21, she began thinking of a way to honor the men and women who raced to the scene to help save lives.

Less than two weeks later, her desire to thank the brave first responders came true.

On Friday December 2, McCoy joined other KZ 106 personalities and staff, Food City representatives, Interim Schools Superintendent Dr. Kirk Kelly, Woodmore Elementary School Principal Brenda Cothran, and other HCDE administration staff members at Chattanooga Fire Department Station #13 on Brainerd Road.

The goal was to personally thank the Hamilton County EMS crews, Hamilton County Sheriff's Office deputies, Chattanooga Fire personnel, Chattanooga Police officers and responding chaplains, each of which received a free Christmas ham, courtesy of Food City and Hormel.

We at HCDE want to express our deepest appreciation to these brave men and women.

Sale Creek Middle High Addition Nearly Complete

As workers put the finishing touches on the new addition at Sale Creek Middle High School, Principal Tobin Davidson gave Interim Superintendent Dr. Kirk Kelly and Assistant Superintendent Dr. Lee McDade a tour of the new digs Wednesday morning.

A beautiful new cafeteria with larger cooking area and two serving lines, brand new multi-purpose gymnasium, new classrooms, 444 new lockers, and an outside courtyard all await the SCMHS students.

Principal Davidson says the new addition has been a long time coming, and he's excited his students will soon be moving out of the portable units and into the new school wing.

More additions and improvements are planned for this school year as well. Principal Davidson said plans are in place to create new science labs as well as new art and music rooms.

6th Annual LAUNCH Chattanooga Youth Entrepreneurship Competition

The Howard School LAUNCH team had an impressive showing Sunday at the LAUNCH Chattanooga Youth Entrepreneurship Competition.

Thirteen groups pitched their business plans at the 6th annual Youth Entrepreneurship Competition Sunday evening at UTC’s Benwood Auditorium.

Here are your winners:

Sense It (1st Place) Shunn Jackson, Deondra Johnson, Menachin Brown, and Jose Juarez created Sense It to allow individuals to safely text and check statuses on their phone without getting into accidents by bumping into things while not paying attention.

Grocery Junky (2nd Place) Terrick Thorne, Demontay Sampson, Andres Salas, and Natacha Peace created an App that makes shopping easier. Grocery Junky provides a list of the supplies the customers already have at home which they can look back on while shopping for new products. The customer can either scan, say, or type in the item in the app and it will be saved onto their account.

Tiger Market (3rd Place)

Rashaela Williams, JaLonnie Mack, and DeShayla Caldwell created the Tiger Market to help reduce disciplinary issues with school uniforms. The team planned to create a uniform vending machine with spirit shirts, ties, belts, and decals. The vending machine would be on the main floor of The Howard School accessible to any student, staff member, parent, or alumni.

Lookout Valley Proves it can Power Through

Lookout Valley Middle High School's soccer team gets a $2,000 award from Powerade for the Powerade-Power Through contest. The contest was specifically designed to help high school sports teams get whatever tools they need to "power through."

Ten southeast Tennessee high schools entered, and Lookout Valley came in first place, with an honorable mention win for Tyner. In total, Powerade donated $74,000 to schools across the southeastern U.S.

The LVMHS students and staff gathered Wednesday afternoon for a special assembly to announce the win.

Coach Dan Basler accepted the check on behalf of the school. Watch the winning video.

Students Install Siding on Tyner’s Tiny Home

Some Tyner Academy students continue the big job of building a tiny home. The project teaches them how to work with wood, insulated metal, and now vinyl siding. Hullco Exteriors donated the siding and provided some workers to teach the kids how to install it on

Thursday. By late morning, nearly all of the siding was in place, completing the look of the outside. Students have already done a lot of work inside, by installing wood paneling to give the home a rustic

look.

Ooltewah High School Takes on the Positivity Challenge

The staff and faculty were challenged to choose a student who inspires them to come to work/school every day.

The finished Positivity Challenge video is posted on the school's YouTube channel. The OHS Media team sent out this message Wednesday morning: We "would like to thank every single person that participated, promoted, and / or allowed filming for this

massive project. Not every segment could be included in the final cut of the video, but we can assure you that every student selected was incredibly impacted by being selected and your kind words. Even students who didn't outwardly show much of reaction were deeply touched; you have no idea how many conversations I overheard about it this month.

Thank you and please share with any educator who may need a 'Final's Boost' down the stretch." Signed, Coach Brown and the OHS Media team

Red Bank High Students take on Urban Planning

Red Bank High School students came up with a real-world solution to urban design. Mrs. Keith-Houle’s Scientific Research Class spent the past four weeks developing an idea for the

vacant middle school property. The goal was to design a space that would bring the community together and provide something for

everyone. They did this by creating plans for separate children- and adult-fitness areas, complete with easy to

follow park yoga guides, a reflection wall made of old CDs, eco-friendly restroom facilities that use natural light, as well as porous concrete areas that allow for rainwater capture.

Those are just a few of the features the students designed and then created with 3D printing for their 3D model.
