100 years ago this year a momentous event took place in the lives of women in Britain. After muchcampaigning both in terms of political posturing and in physical demonstrations, a proportion of women inBritain gained the vote. It took another ten years before ALL women gained that important right, but it wasa start, and it made a difference. In many cases women of all ages laid their lives on the line; withstoodinvasions of their privacy; were ostracised by others and talked, protested and negotiated their waythrough a complex system of male dominated legislation. Out of a mark of respect for them I always turnout to vote. Over the holidays I read a book entitled “A history of Britain in 21 Women” by Jenni Murray. Itspans the whole history of Britain starting with the fiery Iceni Queen Boudicca and ending with MaryQuant. The chapters are short, the text is light but informative and it’s easy to pick up and put down.

What struck me about these women was the diversity of their upbringings and the struggles they had toovercome, many lost husbands; children; jobs; money and much more in their quest to achieve theirlifelong ambition. At times they believed in themselves when no one else seemed to care. They ended updiscovering elements of our universe, writing amazing music, running the country (both as queen andprime minister), writing great literature and designing clothes....... as well as gaining women the vote. Many of them were never recognised in their own life time, and some never saw the day when the thingthat they were so passionate in fighting for, came to fruition. We can learn so much from them, but shouldtheir gender single them out? We could write and read about many men who have suffered the same fateas these indomitable women. Should we celebrate female success and accomplishment over thoseachieved by men? In swinging the pendulum the other way, are we as women at risk of doing to men, what men have done to women? And how does that help us build a culture of true equality and mutualsupport, where all are recognised for what they bring and have to offer, regardless of gender. So whetheryou are male, female, gender neutral, gender fluid, or however you identify I hope that we can encourage
