SURVEY TESTERS REQUIRED: In advance of a survey to BCPVPA members about Radicalization in British Columbia Secondary Schools: The Principals’ Perspective, the researcher requests that several principals/vice-principals test the online survey for functionality, and to share their views on improvements that could be made to the process, questions, or response options. This work should take approximately 30 minutes. When ready for distribution, the survey will be open to all principals and vice-principals who were responsible for students in Grades 8-12 dur-ing the 2013-14 school year. To participate, email researcher Michael Mitchell at [email protected]

Recent studies have pointed out that radicalization is occurring among younger elements of the population, sometimes as young as 14-18 years of age, a time when most people are enrolled in secondary school. Is radicalization occurring in BC secondary schools? If so, can principals and vice-principals identify incidents of this type of behaviour? How do they feel about this real, or apparent threat? Are they equipped and trained to cope with incidents of radical, extremist, or violent extremist behaviour? What measures, if any, do they think should be taken to address the issue at a school, community, or other level?

Upon completion, the report will be sent to the BCPVPA and members should be able to access it by late August.

Thank you for taking part in this research initiative, Michael Mitchell.

President Gordon Lion the Board meeting

in Victoria

Last week — Thursday evening through Saturday — the Board met in Victo-ria, the first Board meeting outside Vancouver/Richmond in several years.

The meeting was anchored by a four-hour visit to the Ministry of Education offices. Deputy Minister Dave Byng, several Assistant Deputy Ministers, and a host of others came to the table to hear from us and to share information about the status of numerous projects and to provide insight into direction and initiatives. The meeting was exceedingly productive on a number of levels, both in terms of building a strong mutual knowledge

base and main-taining the relationships that have been built by succes-sive Boards as they advocated on behalf of principals and vice-principals. After introductions, compensation was front and center. Christina Zacharuk, President, PSEC was forthright that the work of the Exempt Staff Compensation Working Group had made a data-rich case for increased compensation for principals and vice-principals. Both she and Mr. Byng made it clear that they un-derstand the issues created by the compensation freeze and how it has been exacerbated by teacher settlements. Members of the Board gave additional anecdotal evidence about the difficulties now being faced by Boards as they attempt to recruit educators to move into vice-principal and principal positions. Byng and Zacharuk added that they advocate for adoption of the recommendations of the Working Group’s report at every opportunity. They still could not, however, provide a date for the lifting of the compensation freeze that affects all excluded management and executive employees across BC’s public sector, including K-12, the BC Public Service, Crown corporations, health authorities, and univer-sities and colleges. The Association continues to advocate for adoption of the recommendations in the Report and that the increases in com-pensation be fully funded by the Government.

This past week I have had the good fortune to travel to visit with colleagues in Central Okaganan and Cariboo-Chilcotin. I continue to Tweet extensively about these visits and you can read about them at https://twitter.com/principalgli My thanks to everyone for their kind hospitality and inspiring conversations.

Have a great weekend, Gordon
