The purpose of the Energy Storage System (E.S.S.) is to collect and store energy generated during the braking sequence of a vehicle such as a train, metro, trolleybus or tram vehicle. This energy can be consumed by adjacent trains, or it can be stored in a double layer supercapacitor and re-injected to the network when required.

The energy is not only dissipated as heat but can be reused by other vehicles later.

The E.S.S. insures the holding of the traction voltage along the line. The E.S.S. does not require any connection to the public distribution network with its strict requirements. The E.S.S. in a grid has no troublesome effect on the existing line and traffic.

Comparison of the same system without and with Energy Storage System:

Electrical protections:

• The dissipative safety function permits a rapid discharge of the supercapacitor bank.

• SEPCOS unit protects the whole circuit with protection functions.

• UR15 HSCB direct tripping (IDS).

• Output and input side of the converter are protected by fuses.

• Voltage applied to the supercaps is monitored in order to insure the best lifespan of the modules.

• Voltage presence is indicated by safety light indicators.

• 64 frame leakage relay.

• Ventilation is monitored by temperature sensors.

• Safety-surge arresters connected to the input of the E.S.S. circuit between positive and negative pole and between negative and earth.

• Emergency stop button.

• Semiconductor high speed fuses are installed to protect the IGBT DC/DC converter.

Mechanical protection:

• Trolley connectors have degree of protection IP65 when plugged in.

• Supercap trolley is touch protected without any access to power terminals.

• Access to high voltage compartments is limited with safety locking of the doors

• Access to low voltage compartments is fully allowed.

• The door of the cubicle cannot be closed unless the supercap trolley is securely locked in the cubicle.

Human System interface:

1. Local

The local control-command is located on the coupling cubicle and it includes:

• Mode Pre-loading/System OFF/System ON selector

• Mode Reset/Local/Remote selector

• ON/OFF selector for the control of the disconnector

• Emergency stop push-button

• Test lamps push-button

• Lamps: (earth fault, lock-out, HSCB open/closed, disconnector open/closed, pre-load contactor open/in progress...)

• Voltmeters for line voltage and supercaps voltage

• Ammeters for converter input current and supercaps current

2. Remote

Remote Interface via internet connection is available for:

• Board visualisation of the system and its current performances

• Control-command of the system

• Setting of the system

• Diagnostic and life duration management of the supercaps

• Reconditioning process of the supercaps

3. System Settings available in SEPCOS

• Line side voltage thresholds for functioning mode selection

• Current limits for the different functioning modes

• Voltage limits for the different functioning modes

• Regulation: set-points, coefficients and timing

• Loading, regeneration and dissipative discharge maximum slopes
