Energy, Force and Motion

Energy exists in many forms and moves from one form to another. Forces cause

motion to occur.

Page 2: Energy, Force and Motion

Unit Essential Question

How does energy, force and motion play a part in your life?

Page 3: Energy, Force and Motion

LEQ 1: What is movement (motion)?

Concept: Interaction of forces and motion

Page 4: Energy, Force and Motion

How do things move? Above Below Ahead Behind Up Down Horizontally Vertically Right Left

Concept: Interaction of forces and motion

Page 5: Energy, Force and Motion

How do we know something has moved?

By looking at the things that are not moving around it.

FRAME OF REFERENCE

Concept: Interaction of forces and motion

Page 6: Energy, Force and Motion

You can tell that an object has moved when its __________ has changed.

position

Concept: Interaction of forces and motion

Page 7: Energy, Force and Motion

Now answer the question:

What is movement (motion)?

LEQ 2: What makes objects move, stop or change direction?

Force

WHAT IS FORCE?

Any push or pull that causes an object to move, stop or change speed or direction.

Concept: Interaction of forces and motion

Page 11: Energy, Force and Motion

Force The greater the force, the greater the change

in motion.

The bigger an object is, the less effect a force will have on it. The smaller

an object is, the

more effect a force

will have on it.

Inertia

Inertia keeps an object still or keeps it moving.

A moving object will keep moving until something stops it.

An object that is not moving will not move until something moves it.

What is an example of a force between surfaces that slows or stops objects?

Concept: Interaction of forces and motion

Page 18: Energy, Force and Motion

Friction is the resistance to motion made by two objects rub each other.

Rub your hands together! What happens? The heat you feel is friction. Try faster and slow. What happens?

When you pull the brakes on your bicycle. The brake pressing against the tire and the tire rubbing against the street is friction.

Think of bowling. As the ball goes down the lane what happens? The ball begins to slow, this is friction. The ball may lean or start

rolling one direction or the other, this is friction.

Gravity

The force that makes things fall to the ground on Earth is called gravity.

Gravity also holds Earth and the other planets in their orbits around the Sun.

The force of gravity also exists on the moon but it is not as strong as it is on the Earth. This is because the moon is much smaller than the Earth.

Do your Work!!!

WHAT IS WORK?

Work is done when a force is used to move an object a certain distance.

LEQ 4:What are the different types of energy?

Concept: Types of Energy

Page 24: Energy, Force and Motion

Energy

Energy is the ability to do work.

Concept: Types of Energy

Page 25: Energy, Force and Motion

Energy

Two types of energy:

Kinetic (motion)

Potential (right now,it’s not moving, but it has the ability to move)Energy game

Potential Energy

Potential- stored energy (energy waiting to be used)

Can you answer the Unit Essential Question???

How does energy, force and motion play a part in your life?

Think about what you do? Where does the energy come from? What is your body doing? What is moving around you?
