Energy Conversions

Page 2: Energy Conversions

A change from one form of energy to another.

This can be a conversion between any type of energy.

Sometimes one type of energy is converted into several other types in one transformation.

What conversion did we observe during our lab, Bounce!

What is an energy conversion??

Have you heard the saying “breakfast is the most important meal of the day?”Well it is true!

As your body digests your breakfast it breaks down the bonds within the food to release chemical energy. This energy is then transformed into all types to help you get through the day.

Conversions involving CHEMICAL energy…

The Sun!!

Light energy from the sun is taken in by the plants on earth.

Through photosynthesis plants then convert this light energy into chemical energy.

This energy is then released as kinetic energy within you if you eat the plant. It can also be released as thermal and light energy if you light a fire using firewood.

Where does chemical energy come from?

What energy conversions occur in a hair dryer?

Another example…

1. Electrical energy enters the hair dryer and is converted to kinetic energy in the fan that spins within the appliance.

2. This kinetic energy is then converted to thermal energy as it passes through the coils within the dryer.

3. Finally, some of the thermal energy is converted to sound energy as it leaves the dryer.

Make a chart that shows the flow of energy in the situation described below. Include as many types energy and conversions as you can.Allie wakes up at 5:30 am to a rather loud alarm clock

and eats a bowl of cornflakes. It’s a nice day, so she decides to ride her bicycle to work, which is uphill from her house. It is still dark outside. Allie’s bike has a small electric generator so that her headlight comes on when she starts to pedal. She then rides her bike to work.

Please be detailed and specific in your drawing. Also remember to be neat and use color!

Your task…
