Thinking routines and learning improvement strategies
A1 Classrooms have routines that exist to manage student behavior and interactions, to organize learning, and to establish rules for
communication and discourse. Classrooms also have routines that structure the way students go about the process of learning. Rob will share some of the routines he has found ’work’ and ensure students remain on-task and engaged for a large percentage of the class.

A Games Sense approach to the Olympic, team sport of Handball
A4 The Olympic sport of Handball is an excellent option for inclusive and engaging HPE learning. Most students can transfer skills from
other sporting contexts to play Handball at a basic level. This session will explore a Games Sense approach to introducing students to the game and developing simple strategies through experiential learning. Presenters from Queensland Handball will facilitate the session and will introduce strategies to utilise in simple and more complex environments. Bring your game face and unleash your fearless.

Using team building outdoor initiative based activities to achieve curriculum outcomes
A5 Unite - Team Building. Using components of the new Queensland Recreation Centre’s themed programs, teachers will gain an
understanding of how group initiative based activities enable students to identify behaviours, knowledge and skills to be an effective team member. This practical session will provided teachers with resources (both student and teacher) that demonstrate how activities can be delivered to achieve a desired outcome and linked to the Australian HPE curriculum.

Making Health Education work for you and your students. Meet the curriculum mandates, do a great job and engage your students. Too easy!
B1 Let’s take a fresh look at engaging and inclusive health education that facilitates learning in the SIX focus areas of the Australian
Curriculum HPE F-10. Forget about illness, disease, fear and guilt. Approach health education holistically, with positivity and through personalised inquiry that meets the diverse needs of all students using your strengths and theirs. We can achieve health and wellbeing outcomes for our students through the evidence based Common Approach framework and effective communication.

Using the “Hero’s Journey” to bring learning alive in the outdoors- Building personal & social capabilities using the Australian Curriculum
B5 Joseph Campbell’s Hero with a Thousand Faces identifies a framework that is used in myths, legends and great movies that is
also used to provide a clear structure for outdoor education programs. At the Tallebudgera Beach School the education program focuses on the general capability areas of personal and social capability within the Australian Curriculum as well as understanding self through personality typing and temperament theory. Over a 5 day program students undertake the Hero’s Journey for the purpose of Awakening the Hero Within by undertaking a separate quest each day that explores one of 4 key hero types the Warrior Hero, Guardian Hero, Champion Hero and the Mastermind Hero. This practical workshop run by the teaching staff from the Tallebudgera Beach School demonstrates how the story framework is combined with the qualities of the local creek and beach environment to bring learning alive on the Guardian Hero day.

Designing effective assessment for senior PE students
C1 Quality assessment is a vital component to gather valid evidence of what students know and can do. The processes required to
develop quality assessment instruments in Health and Physical Education will be modelled to align curriculum, teaching, learning, assessment and gathering of student evidence. Five key principles of quality assessment will be described and demonstrated, based on current evidence-based research. Using syllabus documents including the QCAA Health Education (2010) and QCAA Physical Education (2010), the principles of quality assessment will be applied to assessment design.

C2 Get inspired in this fun workshop. Participants will be shown lots of wet weather strategies they can put in place when in a confined
space or sharing the space with multiple classes to ensure indoor time is fun and active. They’ll also learn creative ideas and activities that will enhance problem solving, teamwork and effective communication.

C3 In this practical workshop, participants will experience a range of tennis activities specifically designed for large groups of school
students of varying abilities within a limited playing area using modified equipment. The workshop, which adopts common and complimentary aspects of the Game Sense approach, will also highlight the concepts of ‘play with purpose’ which involves guided play using questions to shape, focus and make visible player learning, the deliberate modification of task and environmental constraints to meet learning needs of the student at different stages of game development.

The Role of Embedding in HPE – Traditional Indigenous Games Informing our Future Together
C4 This practical engagement session will tie together the legacy of the Yulunga resource and the current landscape which informs
Indigenous participation, content and issues inside the framework of school in the Queensland context. The session will build from current National policies which inform Indigenous presence inside school programs and highlight EATSIPS (2011), a Queensland initiative that demonstrates how to engage respectfully and effectively with Indigenous content inside your classes. The session will include a discussion about some basic principles of embedding, being informed locally, and building strategically upon a collective and shared sense of Australian history. From this context, the Yulunga resource will be demonstrated, through practical engagement, as a vehicle that naturally facilitates opportunities to apply the principles of the embedding framework, in, about and through HPE.

Building leadership through the delivery of curriculum outcomes within the outdoors
C5 Stand Up – Leadership. Using artificial rock climbing as a backdrop, the staff from Queensland Recreation Centre’s will
demonstrate the delivery of HPE curriculum outcomes based around components of building leadership capabilities from their new themed leadership program “Stand Up”. This session will demonstrate how the delivery of leadership capabilities can be transferred from the classroom to the outdoors regardless of the activity delivered. Resources (both student and teacher) to assist in student development and assessment towards the national curriculum with an outdoor focus will be provided as a guide to session participants.

Decoding the new QLD Physical Education and Health
D1 The Queensland Government will introduce new senior assessment and tertiary entrance systems, starting with students entering Year
11 in 2018. The new system will include:
• a model that uses school-based assessment and common external assessment
• processes that strengthen the quality and comparability of school-based assessment
• a move away from the Overall Position (OP) rank to an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).
The new syllabuses will define course content, which will be organised into four units (units 1 and 2 developmentally less complex than units 3 and 4), inform teaching and learning, as well as outline assessment requirements. The syllabuses will also include instrument specific marking guides for each school-based assessment.
This session will outline the development processes of two new syllabus documents, Physical Education and Health, currently being written.

All participants in this session will be provided with both student and teacher resources during the session and will gain a first-hand experience of what it feels like to be pushed out of your comfort zone.
