Endless Opportunitieswith one of Canada’s leaders in agricultural trade
Business is growing
Saskatchewan is known worldwide as a consistent and reliable supplier of safe, high-quality grains, oilseeds, pulses, livestock and agricultural processing. From boardrooms to marketplaces to farmers in the field, agriculture is the root of the province’s economy, accounting for more than one-third of Saskatchewan’s total exports.
Bountiful production
Saskatchewan’s agricultural land and production numbers are impressive, and with more than 40 per cent of Canada’s farmland, we have unequalled potential to do even more.
In 2013, we produced 96 per cent of Canada’s lentils, 99 per cent of Canada’s chickpeas, 87 per cent of Canada’s durum wheat, 82 per cent of Canada’s flaxseed, 76 per cent of Canada’s mustard seed, 64 per cent of Canada’s dry peas and 50 per cent of Canada’s canola seed.
Saskatchewan has enormous production capacity, and as the world’s population grows, we are an increasingly important food supplier.
Feeding the world
In 2013, Saskatchewan was responsible for:
65% 54% 34% 27% 23%of the world’s lentil exports
of the world’s pea exports
of the world’s durum exports
of the world’s mustard exports
of the world’s canola meal exports
Saskatchewan exports more than $1 billion in each of the four key product sectors: cereal grains (wheat, oats and barley), oilseeds (canola, flax and mustard), pulses (lentils, peas and chickpeas), and edible oils (canola oil). Saskatchewan is a world leader in producing the products required by the fastest-growing countries. We are the leading Canadian exporter of 11 agri-food products.
32% 16% 17%of the world’s flaxseed exports
of the world’s canola seed exports
of the world’s canola oil exports
We also produce a significant percentage of the world’s oats (32%), canary seed (54%), rye (5%) and non-durum wheat (5%) exports.
Global impact
In 2013, Saskatchewan exported $11.7 billion in agricultural products to countries across the globe, including 16 markets with more than $100 million in sales. Saskatchewan’s top export destinations include: United States, China, Japan, India, Mexico, Bangladesh, Venezuela, Algeria, United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Turkey, Italy, Indonesia, Peru, Colombia and Belgium.
Diversified crops. Diversified markets. Saskatchewan is committed to meeting the demands of today and tomorrow.
Wide-open spaces
Saskatchewan has more than six million hectares of pastureland and large quantities of high-quality feed. We are the second-largest beef cattle producer in Canada, with close to a third of Canada’s beef cow herd. Saskatchewan is also a world-class provider of beef genetics.
Saskatchewan also contributes to Canada’s hog and sheep production and is home to one-third of Canada’s bison herd. Our livestock herds continue to rank among the finest in the world, creating investment opportunities in value-added meat processing.
Providing for tomorrow
Saskatchewan is a leader in agriculture research and development. Saskatchewan has a strong life science cluster in Saskatoon. Our expertise covers biofuels, bioproducts, crop research, ingredients, nutrition and health and wellness.
We are home to many renowned research institutions and businesses, such as the Global Institute for Food Security, the Saskatchewan Food Centre, Innovation Place Research Park and the Canadian Light Source Synchrotron. Our state-of-the-art research infrastructure has spawned a large number of successful businesses. Saskatchewan’s Crop Development Centre has, over the last four decades, created more than 400 new commercial crop varieties.
The Saskatchewan Advantage
• A commitment to growth.
• Unmatched agricultural potential.
• World-class investment opportunities.
• Industry leading research facilities.
We are a global leader in the supply of agriculture products required by the world’s fastest growing countries. We have the potential to add value to our existing crop and livestock exports by expanding our processed food, feed and bioproducts sector.
We have a reliable transportation system that moves our produce from truck to train to ship, and a transportation hub to support the integration of our exports into the container systems used worldwide.
