'exhilarating performance'at 155m.p.h.The R.S.Cosworth combines truly sensationalperformance with the comfort, convenience and easy todrive characteristics of an everyday family car. The turbocharged engine develops as much power per litre as the fullblooded grand prix cars of not so long ago, but the SierraR.S.Cosworth is perfectly content to potter along inslow moving high street traffic. Surely to rank as analI-time classic.

Message from the Mayor of BrightonCouncillor Jacqueline Lythell
It gives me genuine pleasure to send this message of greetingand goodwill to all who will be present in Brighton on Saturday, the 13th September, in order to participate in, or to witness, theEndeavour 1986 Brighton National Speed Trials.
Of the great number of sporting events which each year have asa portion of their route Brighton's Madeira Drive, none has a moreexciting reputation than the Speed Trials. You will understand, therefore, how disappointed I am that due to a visit abroad inSeptember I am prevented from being present in person at theTrials. However, I am happy to be represented by the DeputyMayor, Councillor Ray Blackwood, who I know will be impressedby this fascinating and unique event which holds a place of suchdistinction in our town's annual calendar.

THE ENDEAVOURBRIGHTON NATIONAL SPEED TRIALS
Held under the General Regulations of the RAC Motor Sport Association Ltd. (incorporating theprovisions of the International Sporting Code of/he F.l.A. and the Supplementary Regula/ions).This year the Endeavour Brighton National Speed Trials sees a change in the Classes into which
competing cars are divided in order to bring our Classes into line with thoses of the other events inthe two National championships for which our event is a qualifying round. However, the nature ofthe event is unchanged and even though many new Class records will have to be established it willsrill provide the same spectacle that has thrilled the crowds since 1905 when the event was first run.In that year the late Sir Harry Preston persuaded Brighton Town Council to lay the first-ever tarmacsurfaced motor racing track specially for (he Brighton Speed Trials which have been run there, witha few interruptions, ever since. On a fine day the Venue has almost a Mediterranean atmosphere. Ancient and modem exotic
machinery mix with more mundane-looking, but very potent, every day vehicles: alarmingly"hairy"-looking specials and equally alarming-looking motor-cycles mix with top-ranking modernsprint and hill-climb cars: and they are all sandwiched between the sea on one side and the backdropof the high terraces on the other making an ideal setting for the bustle and activity of a motor racemeeting.Today will see more of the experts in the art of getaway trying to shave precious hundredths of a
second off their times for the half-mile course and, if the weather is kind, the fastest of them will beapproaching 170 m.p.h, when they reach Dukes Mound. You're not normally allowed to behave likethis on Brighton Front but this is a Very Special Occasion and the Club is very grateful to EndeavourMotor Company, without whose sponsorship it would not be possible.
Tony Johnstone, Chairman.

For a number of years now the Vintage Motor Cycle Club have been delighted to be invited by theBrighton and Hove Motor Club to be their guests for the day and to continue the long history of motorcycfe participation in an almost unique motoring event. Unique, in that basically the event stilloperates in the traditional sprint atmosphere and has miraculously retained the ambience that sadly isso often missing in the super commercialised upper echelons of sport today.
1986 is in fact the fortieth anniversary of the foundation of the VMCC and the club have beenrunning a series of "Nostalgia" events throughout the season. These events have resulted in a lot ofhistoric machines being brought out from under the dust sheets; for example Tony Brown hasrebuilt Nero after it had been hidden away for some twenty years - Nero, the machine on whichTony's late Father George had so many successes over the Brighton course. Another one-timeBrighton FrO machine is Gordon Colquhoun's Moto Vincent ridden by Charlie Rous just as in thepast - Charlie, who did so much good work in the early days as Editor of Motor Cycle Newspromoting the re-ernergent sport of Motor cycle sprinting.Another famous Brighton machine is that of Ernie Woods. The machine is another from the
Francis Williams stable and is of the same series as the one ridden by that doyen of Brightonparticipants, Basil Keys; these machines are of course the legendary Norton "Featherbeds", stuffedfull of the "Cooper" type J.A. Prestwich 998cc vee-twins.Another vee-twin that has not seen Brighton for many a year is VMCC Founder "Tich" Allen's
mount, the legendary George Brough sprinter "Old Bill". This one is not going to break anyrecords, for side valves and a rather ponderous "hand-cum-foot" gear change tend to allow theseconds to build. Nevertheless, Bill can still give a good account of himself and will give present dayspectators a good idea of how things were back in the early twenties. Despite having a goodselection of the older Brighton machines we still have plenty of modem ones to provide a fewfireworks and most of our usual riders to set the fuses. Finally, and as always, I would like to thank all those people who put in so much work before, on,
and after the day, come rain or shine, and particularly those unsung heroes and heroines who, whileothers get on and enjoy the racing, never ever see one little bit themselves but just keep beaveringaway so that everyone else has a good day's sporLThankyou to the club for inviting us yet again, and tbankyou spectators, for without your support
the event could hardly be maintained.Phil Manzano 1986
