ENDEAVOUR LOG

“Our success over recent years has continued and is set to be surpassed in 2017.”

OUR ACADEMIC SUCCESS AND FOCUS

Endeavour’s number one priority will always be delivering academic success for all our students. This means ensuring that every student reaches their academic potential. We do not apologise for encouraging all our students to aspire towards obtaining a university placement.

Our Year 7 & 8 Extension classes have made a great start to the year. Their differentiated curriculum is resulting in students being challenged and engaged. We recently had a large number of Year 6 students sit the Extension Class exam for the 2018 class.

STEM: In early Term 2 we will be launching our highly anticipated STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) program. Designed to encourage students to become experts in these fields, the launch is set to receive great publicity.

Our High Expectations Policy continues to reinforce that a student’s main focus must be on their learning. Students, teachers and parents are fully aware of the criteria that must be met for students to participate in extra-curricula and sporting activities. The criteria include:

1. Minimum 90% attendance.

2. Consistently good behaviour.

3. No incomplete subject tasks such as classwork & assessments.

We are very proud of the partnerships we have developed with Sydney University, no more so than in the area of literacy. The University’s Dr Kathy Rushton has developed a specialised literacy program that is being implemented across the junior years.

A GROWING SCHOOL WHICH HAS RAISED THE CRITERIA FOR ENROLMENT

We have seen a 17% increase in our student population over the last 2 years. Our 2017 Year 7 cohort is double what it was 3 years ago. This increase has occurred while the criteria for enrolment have been raised considerably, and reflects the fast growing popularity of Endeavour. Given the huge crowd at our Open Night we are expecting to see the numbers continue to rise.

The simple message for any future enrolment applicant is: regardless of sporting or creative talent, a student must be able to demonstrate that they are a serious learner in order to be accepted into the school. We are receiving incredible public recognition of our achievements: In addition to the Sydney Morning Herald article that was written about us last year (http://www.smh.com.au/national/education/endeavour-sports-high- school-is-where-stars-are-made-20160323-gnq0kf.html), the Daily Telegraph recently published the article below.

Message from James Kozlowski (Principal)

In May we will feature in a 2 part documentary on sports high schools to be shown on Foxtel: - Episode 1: Monday 1st May at 9.30pm and replayed Wednesday 3 May at 7.30pm. - Episode 2: Monday 8 May at 9.30pm and replayed Wednesday 10 May at 7.30pm.

The promo for the documentary can be accessed at: https://youtu.be/3EouAXx06FY

THE CREATIVE ARTS

We are very proud of our talented students in the creative arts. Our Dance program recently employed a new Dance teacher, Helena Kyriacou, who comes with an incredibly impressive CV. Ms Kyriacou has already made several changes to the program and, as can be seen via the links below, the quality of performances under her tutelage are very impressive.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YyQs-Go3Rc - I Rise (Contemporary/Lyrical) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FipIq8TXlgA - I'm The One (Musical Theatre)

The students in our school band and music program have been performing at various school events and they never fail to impress. Endeavour has a very strong music program and is generating some outstanding talent.

In addition, drama and art students are producing some really impressive work and are a further demonstration of the variety of talent we have at Endeavour.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP We are very proud of our 2017 student leadership group that is incredibly well led by Mojela and Kaelin. Our captains, prefects and SRC members are leaders in every respect and consistently set a great example for our student body. We are asking our student leaders to take a very high profile in our community because they are the best ambassadors for our school. Having said this, we are constantly reminding all of our students that they represent our school from the minute they leave home in the morning until they return in the afternoon. I am pleased to say that we have received several phone calls and emails from members of the public praising the behaviour of our students.

TARGETED SPORTS PROGRAM No other school in the country has more successful partnerships with elite sporting organisations, including:

Football/soccer – Sydney FC

AFL – Sydney Swans

Cricket – Sydney 6ers & Cricket NSW

Netball – Netball NSW & the Swifts

Rugby League – Cronulla Sharks

Athletics – Southerland Athletics Association

Baseball – Sydney Blue Sox and Baseball NSW

Swimming – Former Olympian Craig Stevens

Cheerleading – Shire Elite Cheerleading

Hockey – Hockey NSW

Bringing the very latest in sports science to Endeavour: This term saw the introduction of our ‘Australian first’ sports science research project with the University of Sydney. This project is a longitudinal study of our student athletes and how sports science can be used to enhance athletic performance and prevent injury.

Full time strength and conditioning: Supporting this application of sports science has been our employment of a full-time Director of Athletic Development, Matt Jay. Mr Jay is a PE teacher who is one of the most highly qualified strength and conditioning coaches in Australia; he will ensure that all students gain access to S&C.

The quality and quantity of athletes in the TSP has dramatically increased. Trials for Year 7, 2018 will be held in Weeks 1&2 of Term 2, and registration details can be obtained by calling the school.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

I wish to thank all the staff and students for making Term 1 such a success. I wish all of our community a restful and enjoyable Easter break.

EXTENSION CLASS – 7J and 8J It has been a productive and busy start to the year for our extension classes both in Year 7 and Year 8. The 7J class in particular have transitioned extremely well from their primary schools, moulding into the Endeavour family with ease and engaging in numerous extracurricular activities already, broadening their academic, sporting and social connections.

Through staff feedback and student interests, we have begun the process of identifying the varied talents that our students have so that we can put in place our differentiated programs and focus on extending those students with creative and intellectual gifts. These programs across the KLAs will cater for the acceleration or extension of students that are already achieving the outcomes of Stage 4 and to encourage others to pursue leadership activities, personal interests in Creative Arts, Music and or Humanities.

I have had the pleasure of meeting with the 7J class on a few occasions where I touch base with them about upcoming excursions, school initiatives and of course how they are going in their subjects. The students have so far expressed an overwhelming appreciation of what the school has to offer and they seem genuinely excited and happy with their introduction to high school here at Endeavour. A lot of my feedback was gained particularly on the Geography excursion to Cockatoo Island where I was able to speak to many of the students in a more informal setting and see what they are enjoying and what friends they have made. Their enthusiasm for learning is infectious.

The 8J class have shown a great deal of maturity this year, adapting to the Year 8 curriculum and continuing to participate and grow in other school activities like the SRC, Debating, STEM, Creative Arts, Hotmaths and community programs. Particular mention goes to Reneigh Scott and Harrison Parker who accompanied Mr Kozlowski to Caringbah North Primary School to answer questions about Endeavour to the Year 5 & 6 students and did so with eloquence and a maturity beyond their years. I have to also extend a BIG thank you to Reneigh, Tessa Finch & Jasmine Catts for assisting me last year in readying the hall for the final awards assembly. They decorated the hall, helped Mrs Haralambous with the catering in the library and took a load off my shoulders while I could see to the other details of the following day. Harrison Parker and Tyler Sherman also assisted with escorting dignitaries from the office to the hall and were exceptional ambassadors for Endeavour. HSIE Excursion News

The 7J class have had the privilege of travelling by train then ferry out to Cockatoo Island for Geography during Week 7, where they were educated about a World Heritage listed site right here in Sydney. Mrs Jackson and I accompanied them on this excursion and it was a great experience for us to see the students outside the classroom. They were highly curious and demonstrated their own knowledge about Sydney’s convict past. Stand out students such as Brae Ovens, Tamara Girdwood-Reich, Brock La Macchia, Ariella Tang, Brendan Burbidge, Gordan Damcevski Jeffrey Guan, Hayden Matthews, Damien Murphy, Ethan Simpson, Alexandra Singleton, Dion Vallianos & Sean Woods all asked insightful questions about how the movement of people across continents impacted Australia in the convict era and completed their booklets with detail and commitment.

Reneigh Scott and Harry Parker with Mr Kozlowski at Caringbah North Primary School

It was an outstanding learning experience that the students thanked us for as they left for the day. It is wonderful to have these opportunities to take the students from the classroom out to field trips as they enrich their experience of the syllabus in more tangible and real ways.

STEM News with 7J and 8J

STEM kicked off in Term 1 at Endeavour with our 7J and 8J classes each attending the “Introduction to STEM” day.

STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and STEM learning is based on the idea of combining subjects traditionally taught individually, into one overall subject.

STEM learning is project based learning. It attempts to change the typical teacher-centred classroom by engaging students in activities involving problem-solving, discovery and exploratory learning with an emphasis on collaborative work between students to find innovative solutions. Students benefit from STEM learning as it encourages them to apply the skills learnt in their individual subjects in meaningful and relevant ways to real world situations.

In the program so far the students have learnt about the types of careers and technology associated with STEM education and conducted some fun group focused work. The projects included “fireworks in a jar”, “float your boat”, “loopy gliders” and “straw tower.” Each project focused on different aspects of STEM learning including observations, planning, team work, roles, design processes, evaluation and presentation skills.

Some of the feedback from our students about their STEM experience is reproduced below:

“I enjoyed the day, it was fun. After this I have thought about a STEM career.” ( Year 8J student) “I thought STEM was great and it helped me get an insight on Mathematics, Technology, Science and Engineering

jobs.” (Year 8J student) “I thought the STEM lesson was fun because we learnt new things and did cool activities.” (Year 7J student) “It was good because not only were we having fun we were learning at the same time.” (Year 7J student) “I liked making the boat because it challenged my mind to think outside the box!” (Year 8J student) “It's fun and it gets your mind thinking.” (Year 8J student) “I liked building towers out of straws. My favourite part of STEM is engineering.” (Year 8J student) “STEM was a different approach to learning and is very unique. This project was very successful and should be

continued.” (Year 7J student) “I liked learning how to do different things I did not know I could do.” (Year 7 student)

We are hoping to extend our STEM course in Term 2 to include other Year7 and Year 8 classes with the long term goal of offering all of our students the opportunity to attend STEM learning.

Some STEM action

English Update for 8J In English 8J has been completing a unit on Indigenous Perspectives. At this stage they are preparing to deliver their speeches on the texts they have studied. They have done an incredible job analysing visual images in Shaun Tan and John Marsden’s ‘The Rabbits’ and have gained insight into the Stolen Generation through their viewing of ‘The Rabbit Proof Fence’. Next term we will be participating in a cross curricular activity with Science. In English, students will be developing their debating skills and knowledge of rhetorical devices to be applied in a formal debate on a controversial scientific issue of their choice. History Update for 8J

The 8J will accompany Mrs Dunne and Ms Maddie Jessop to Macquarie University in Week 10 to partake in workshops at the Museum of Ancient Cultures, however the report for this will not be available till the next Log. The students will travel with the Year 9 Forensic Archaeology class to learn more about ancient artefacts and the traditions and cultures of ancient civilisations. In addition they will take a tour of the magnificent Museum that houses ancient pots, mummies, coins, obelisks, ostracon, stone tablets and jewels from the ancient kingdoms of Egypt, Rome, Crete, Mycenae, Greece and Persia.

Maths Update

Both classes have entered a competition run by AMSI, Australian Mathematical and Sciences Institute and BHP Billiton. The competition is called CHOOSEMATHS. They work in groups to create a 3 to 5 minute video on Maths is our Future for a chance to win $2000.

As of today, they will also be working with HOTmaths an interactive Maths program.

LIBRARY It has been a very busy start to the year. The library is buzzing before school, recess and at lunch with students working on assessment tasks and homework, researching, reading, borrowing books and playing chess. It is wonderful to see the students engaged in their studies and in extracurricular activities. During lesson time, classes are booked in to use our resources and senior students are working in their study periods.

Our theme for the semester is “Read the Movie”. A number of our students have watched movies and have been surprised that they originated from books. Others have seen movies advertised and have made a point of reading the book before seeing the movie. “Jasper Jones” by Craig Silvey has proven popular, with both parents and students coming in to borrow.

Reading Challenges

The Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) 2017 is now open for registration. The Challenge aims to promote a love of reading for leisure and to enable students to experience quality literature. Students can also register for Mr Kozlowski’s 2017 Endeavour Principal's Reading Challenge. If your child is not already involved in either of these Challenges and would like to be, all they need to do is come to the library and we can get them started!

James, Marley and Oscar (below) show an outstanding commitment to the 7N reading program. They regularly visit the library in their own time to read and borrow.

Some of the new additions to our collection:

NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST BULLYING & VIOLENCE ENDEAVOUR SAYS ‘NO TO BULLYING AND HARASSMENT’

On Friday, 17 March 2017 Endeavour Sports High School again participated in the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. The aim of this initiative is to emphasise the commitment that Australian Schools make in creating a supportive school environment, free from bullying, harassment and violence. Participation in this day is a way of reinforcing Endeavour’s policy on anti-bullying:

‘Every person at Endeavour Sports High School has the

right to learn and teach within a safe, happy, fair and

supportive environment. As a community we value

cooperation, respect and compassion for others. At our

school everyone has the right to experience positive and

respectful relationships based on these qualities. Bullying

is therefore not tolerated at Endeavour Sports High

School.’

This day was combined with Harmony Day, traditionally held on March 21. Harmony Day is intended to show cohesion and inclusion in Australia and promote a tolerant and culturally diverse society. It is about community participation, inclusiveness, celebrating diversity, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

We took this opportunity to reinforce Endeavour’s stance on bullying and violence starting with a whole school assembly. Our Principal, Mr James Kozlowski, addressed the school community providing a very clear message that bullying and harassment has no place at our school. He discussed the importance of valuing individual differences and taking the opportunity to learn from and accept these differences.

Chantelle Symes performed a heartfelt rendition of Bruno Mars’ ‘Count on me’ sending a message of resilience, support and friendship.

The Senior Leaders along with the SRC presented a compassionate and engaging speech discussing the importance of inclusiveness and the significant role of the bystander in providing support for all.

During the assembly we reinforced our continuing philosophy on anti-bullying and violence by showing a video clip made at Endeavour traditionally called ‘The Endeavour Promise.’ An uplifting presentation involving our whole school community standing united against bullying and showing the importance of supporting and protecting each other. Thank you to Shareen, our Student Support Officer and Egypt Simpson, Year 10, for this wonderful presentation.

After the assembly our Japanese visitors and their Endeavour hosts released orange and blue balloons as a symbol of our commitment to harmony and stance against bullying.

It was great to see all the students and staff become united in our stance against bullying and violence. This day was not a one-off. It supports other programs implemented within the school such as Rock and Water, Cyber Safety presentations, Internet Safety and Social Networking, Anti-racism, Peer Support and White Ribbon initiatives. Students or parents requiring support or information about anti-bullying and harassment are urged to contact the school.

Remember Endeavour’s Promise:

• Not to join in

• Seek help

• Protect each other DON’T STANDBY…STAND TOGETHER

U-TURN THE WHEEL

On Wednesday 1 March our Year 11 students participated in the "U Turn the Wheel" driver education program. It was coordinated by local Rotary Clubs and supported by Sutherland Shire Council. The underlying theme promotes students taking individual responsibility for the choices that they make as drivers The presentations included: Keeping Your L’s and P’s Local Highway Patrol Officers discussed the methods and consequences of enforcement. There was a strong focus on identifying risk-taking behaviour such as speeding, using mobile phones and the penalties for these offences. Picking Up the Pieces The Paramedics from NSW Ambulance Service presented on the results of crashes focusing on how they can be avoided and how driver attitude affects risk. Driver Distractions Peer educators from St George Youth Services presented a highly interactive session on managing distractions and how best to deal with them. New Driver Survivor Local driving instructors emphasised the hazards, distractions and risks that challenge safe driving outcomes. Being Fit to Drive Students learned that there are no “safe” amounts of drugs or alcohol when driving. The session included how different substances can impair driving ability, the rate that young bodies process alcohol as well as the importance of having a "getting home safely" plan. Our students enjoyed the day but more importantly took away lessons that will help make them more responsible drivers.

JAPANESE VISITORS Shirane High School

During March, ESHS hosted 12 students and two teachers from Shirane High School, Japan. Shirane High School is in the city of Yamanashi, near Mount Fuji. The visiting students attended school classes with their Endeavour Buddy, TSP Sport and ESL lessons to help further their English skills and understanding of Australian culture.

Despite the consistent wet weather, the students were still able to enjoy excursions to Symbio Zoo, Bundeena, Cronulla Beaches and a ferry trip.

Thank you to all the host families from ESHS who had students stay in their homes and to the buddy students for making the visiting students feel so welcome.

This valuable and rewarding program is run in March each year. Please see Mr Hibbert if there are any families interested in hosting a Japanese student in 2018.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS EXCURSION (Royal National Park) On Friday 3 March, Mr O'Brien and Ms Certoma, Gary Abel and Camilla Figueredo were accompanied by International students Karolin Scoepke(Germany), Emma Zucchelli (Italy), Maya Fratoni (Italy), Magdalena Sikora (Austria) and Patricia Arnolds (Germany). We followed the Big Marley track to the cliffs where we saw numerous rock engravings depicting whales, marsupials, human and ancestral figures. We proceeded to Big Marley Beach and then into the bush where we visited rarely seen rock engravings overlooking Marley lagoon returning to the car via Little Marley track which was awash crossing the waterfall at Deer Pool. The students thoroughly enjoyed the day and experienced these sites thanks to Mr O'Brien's extensive knowledge of the area. The International students will have these amazing memories and photos to remind them of their time in Australia.

CLONTARF On Wednesday 15 March our students earned the right to head off campus on an excursion to the Sydney Airport. Several students participated in a tour around the domestic and international airport, fire station, and Sydney airport head office. The purpose of this activity was to immerse the boys in the various employment and volunteer opportunities available, through the vehicle of education.

All the boys represented the school and academy with flying colours. I'll finish by sharing the quote of the day from Gary Abel - "This was the best excursion I think I've ever been on TC!"

TSP FOOTBALL

Welcome back to another busy year in the Sydney FC Endeavour Sports High School Football program.

It is another year of continued development in the program. We have now completed a full year as a Sydney FC program and Kelly Cross, Sydney FC Academy Director, is pleased with the progress of our school in such a short time.

Our New Sydney FC coach

James Lambert, Sydney FC appointed coach has been part of this program for the past eight months and has introduced many positive initiatives that the students have benefited enormously from.

Part of the conditions that the school and Sydney FC have implemented is a direct line between Sydney FC academy and ESHS.

As a consequence, James was offered a coaching position at Sydney FC. Unfortunately James declined the offer due to his current commitments at Marconi. We thank James for his commitment to Endeavour and the effort he put into training the boys.

As a result Sydney FC implemented a search for a worthy replacement to ensure the continued advancement of the program and to join with Teresa Polias who is currently focused on the girls Sydney FC program.

We are now very pleased to announce that the new Sydney FC/ESHS coach is Pat McCann. He has also been appointed Sydney FC U/15 academy coach.

Pat has just returned from Europe having reviewed development programs at clubs including Manchester City, West Ham, Celtic and Rangers. Some of his credentials include being an A Licence coach who has been head coach and Academy Director for the Football Federation Australia and Canberra Academy. He has worked with the Socceroos and Matildas during the past two years in the analysis of games and coaching development. He has been a past presenter at FFA State conferences. He spent six years in the USA as program director at numerous conferences. He was a past player and coach in Europe.

We look forward to taking advantage of Pat’s skills and knowledge to continue our progress as a partner with Sydney FC.

Jubilee Physiotherapy and Endeavour Sports High School Football

After some negotiation, Jubilee Physiotherapy is now a partner of ESHS Football.

As part of our partnership our TSP football players will undergo a functional musculoskeletal screening under the supervision of Jubilee.

The purpose of the screening will be to:

1 Gain an understanding of the athletes injury history (current and past) 2 Establish the athlete’s current training and load exposure 3 Identify potential injury risks 4 Establish a baseline for future decision making

Once this information is collected feedback can be given regarding individuals and the team so that injury prevention and performance enhancement programs can be developed.

As a consequence, Jubilee has been at ESHS for the past three Thursdays conducting screenings of all our students.

This screening will form the basis of strengthening programs to ensure our students have the best opportunity to remain injury free whilst training and playing football.

Jubilee Physiotherapy will also be supporting the Football program in offering discounted sessions for any of our students who suffer from injuries.

ESHS Athletic Director

Matt Jay is the school’s new Athletic Director. He has been spending the last few weeks working with various groups within our football program. Here he is working with our girls on an improved warm up regime to ensure they are improving in strength and flexibility in preparation for training sessions and games.

Sydney FC Talent ID Days

Our Sydney FC talent identification days have now begun with many of our students participating under the watchful eye of the Sydney FC coaches. These ID days will serve as a basis to make decisions about how our players are tracking and if any changes are needed to ensure our players are working to the standards expected by Sydney FC.

Sydney East Trials

Both our Open boys and girls have been participating in the Sydney East Football trials over the past few weeks. The girls trials are now finished and we can announce that Izzy Georgievski, Alex Tims, Jade Lockton, Melody Nelson and Savannah Clift as members of the Sydney East Girls Football Squad. Chantelle Symes, captain and goalkeeper for the NSW Institute U/16 squad was named as a shadow.

Our boys will find out on Monday who has made it to regional representation.

Both the boys and girls will then be trialling for positions in the NSWCHS teams for possible selection in this year’s Pacific School’s games NSW state teams. Congratulations and good luck to all.

TSP RUGBY LEAGUE

It has been a slow start to the Rugby League year, with a number of early season games being postponed due to recent wet weather. Weather permitting, the Buettner Shield and Stanley Cup preliminary games and the Buckley Shield are scheduled for Wednesday 5 April on the “Field of Dreams” at Endeavour.

TEAM APP

As mentioned at the start of the year, we have launched Endeavour TSP Rugby League on “Team App”.

We encourage all parents and students involved with TSP Rugby League to download the app and join “Endeavour Sports High School TSP Rugby League”. We aim to use the app to keep students and parents updated on any news involving games, training sessions, meetings etc.

The app is available from the app store and Play store. Register your details with the app, then join the Endeavour Sports High School TSP Rugby League team. From there you can join different groups eg Players and Officials, Year 7 2017, Parents. We are hoping that this app makes communication between parents and students with the school a lot more efficient. You will receive notifications on your phone when there is any news and we can also contact you via email.

St Marys Cup

Endeavour TSP Rugby League began its defence of the St Marys Cup with a hard fought 18-8 victory over Bass High on Wednesday, March 29.

At ESHS only non-junior rep players are eligible to play in the St Marys Cup competition. The rescheduling of the Sydney East Rugby League trials for the same day depleted our Opens Rugby League numbers further and left us with only 14 players, and only two of them in Year 12.

Three Year 10 students James Priestley, Jeremy Stowers and Sidney Noppen volunteered to step up and make their Opens debut and did an exceptional job on limited preparation.

The game itself was played in hot and humid conditions and regular handling errors meant that ESHS spent a large chunk of the first half defending. The lone scoring play in the first period was a superb solo effort from Year 11 student Luciano Svagelli who burst through the Bass HS defensive line from 30m out and out sped the cover coming across to dive over under the posts. The try was comfortably converted by Sardy Halbouni and ESHS went to the break leading 6-0.

The teams exchanged tries early in the second half to make the score 12-4 to ESHS. Endeavour’s try was a great team effort involving multiple passes before being finished off by Preston Smith-Atkinson.

When Bass crossed for a try to make it 12-8 with 10 minutes to go, everyone knew we were in for a tense and event filled finale. Multiple handling errors meant that Bass were permanently attacking the Endeavour try line. Time and time again the Endeavour defence turned away the big Bass pack charging at the line.

With one minute to go an exhausted Endeavour crew of defenders held up a barnstorming Bass forward over the try line on the last tackle. From the ensuing set Sidney Noppen, playing in his debut game for the school, made a break from 70m out. He then stepped the fullback and evaded the other desperate Bass defenders to crash over under the posts and seal victory for ESHS. Sardy Halbouni completed a perfect three from three attempts by converting the try and making the final score 18-8.

Highlights included a man of the match performance from Luciano Svagelli in his return to playing following a six month layoff, and the fact that all three try scorers scored their first try on the “Field of Dreams.”

The next game in the competition will be the rescheduled game against Ashcroft HS to be played in early Term 2.

Canberra 9s 2017

This year the Canberra 9s tournament was held as an overnight excursion, with accommodation at the Capital Country Holiday Park.

The squad had four pool games with the top two in the pool of five going through to the Cup Final.

Our first game was against Canberra College. Lead by Captain Sam Clarke, the players worked hard in defence to keep the opposition to a zero score. In attack, tries were scored by James Russell (three); Jamee Smith (two), Joshua Scales and Mitchell Brennan (one each) with Sam Clarke converting four drop goals.

The second game was tightly fought against the host and last year winners, Erindale College. The final result was Erindale College winning two tries to Endeavour Sports one try.

The third game against Illawarra Sports High started with light rain which was to last for the rest of the tournament. Endeavour was able to hold out Illawarra to win three tries to two. James Russell, Darcey Moran and Jamee Smith scoring one try each and Sam Clarke with one conversion.

The fourth game against Gungahlin College was played in heavy rain and as a result there were missed passes and dropped balls. We were however able to draw at two tries each, securing us a place in the Final against Erindale College.

Erindale had a strong start, with repeat sets in attack resulting in two tries. Endeavour fought back to score a try in the middle of the game and were looking strong in attack, but a drop ball in our 40 resulted in a turn over and within that next set Erindale converted the opportunity into points. Erindale where able to hold onto their lead and retained the Canberra 9s Cup for 2017.

I would like to thank a few people who made this trip not only possible but extremely enjoyable. Firstly, Eronny Mareko for his coaching and support throughout the trip. Eronny is an Endeavour graduate, School Captain of 2010 and was a member of our Rugby League program. He now works with Clontarf and is always willing to lend a hand. Thank you to the parents who travelled down to support their sons and the school; to Charlie Hook who, although injured the weekend before the tournament, travelled down with the players and assisted the coaching staff. Finally a big thank you to our boys who were extremely respectful and co-operative and played with true spirit throughout the tournament. Parents, you should be very proud of your sons.

TSP BASKETBALL

During the term our Senior Girls TSP Basketball squad journeyed to Canberra. As part of International Women's Day, and for person development, they attended Canberra University to listen to National Sportswomen discuss their careers.

There were three speakers: Chantelle Jones - Ultimate Frisbee; Tina Taseska - National Hockey player; as well as our own ex Endeavour student and TSP Basketballer, Kate Gaze.

Kate talked about commitment to sport, time management and other facets of striving to achieve. She shared her experiences in basketball, from representing Endeavour, then attending the AIS, representing Australia, then St Mary's College in the USA, to attaining WNBL championships with Townsville and now representing Canberra.

Kate then acted as our assistant coach in a friendly game against Erindale Senior College. Over the last two years, our girls have placed second and third in the Under 16 State Championships, and undertook further development at the Schools National Championship in December.

Thanks to Kate for giving advice and direction to our young aspiring basketballers. She was very impressed with the talent and positive style with which they played.

TSP NETBALL Our netballers have had a productive Term 1 with skills training and focusing on keeping up their fitness.

On 7 March our under 15s took part in the SE Knockout comp and have progressed to the next stage. This event will take place over two days in Berkeley on 23 & 24 May.

On 21 March a group of 14 netballers visited Netball Central at Homebush for a Sports High Schools Netball Development Day. It was a fantastic day for the girls. They were able to watch the Giants train in the morning; they then played friendly netball games with the other Sports High Schools; they listened to some guest speakers from the Swifts (current player and the Swifts nutritionist) before finishing the day by watching the Swifts run through their training drills.

Congratulations to Lauren Hamilton-Smith, Zoe Kirby, Ky-Mani Schwenke, Ella Robinson and Shannon Brown who trialled on 21 March and were selected for the Sydney East team.
