VOLUNTEER PICNIC

W hen the calendar turns to October and our thoughts to fall and the coming holiday season, it can mean only one thing: It’s time for the Annual End of the Year Matching Campaign

at Boca Helping Hands. Once again, the challenge has been issued! Our anonymous donor will match, dollar for dollar, every contribution to Boca Helping Hands up to a total of $200,000, as long as (1) the contribution is unrestricted and therefore may be used to support general operations; and (2) is received between November 1st and December 31st.

Each year, our generous supporters respond to the challenge. What other “investment” can you make that will return 100%? Let’s make 2016 the most successful matching campaign ever. Here are some bullet points you can share with your family, friends and colleagues as you encourage a new contributor to make their End of the Year Matching Campaign donation.

In 2015, Boca Helping Hands…

…served 55,401 hot meals.

…was awarded a Four Star Rating from Charity Navigator for the 11th consecutive year and was one of only 51 charities nationwide to earn the perfect score of 100!

…distributed 67,324 pantry bags of groceries.

…in December, opened, in conjunction with Genesis Community Health, its fi rst fully staff ed Medical Clinic to serve our clients’ needs.

In 2016, Boca Helping Hands…

…dispersed over $27,000 for summer camp registrations so parents would not have to quit their jobs in the summer months to care for their children.

…helped over 100 clients fi nd gainful employment through our job training programs.

…in September, opened, in conjunction with Genesis Community Health, our fi rst fully staff ed Dental Clinic.

This list goes on with new job training programs being added.

In January 2017, the Justin D. Webb Training Center will open, off ering classes in professional development, as well as, health and wellness to our clients.

Boca Helping Hands continues to be the bridge, helping our clients cross from basic human need to self-suffi ciency. Your gift to the End of the Year Matching Campaign will make this and so many more dreams a reality. Please remember, your contribution is unrestricted and should arrive at BHH between November 1st and December 31st.

Meet Linda Fiffi e, mother of 4, grandmother of 10 and a recent Home Health Aide graduate.  Linda didn’t have a high school diploma and had been working as an aide for the past 25

years when her previous employer of 12 years passed away.  Because of the changes in rules and regulations, Linda needed a way to get the certifi cations and background checks now required to be a certifi ed Home Health Aide. Linda’s sister, Mabel, came to pick up her pantry bag and brought Linda with her.  They had been talking about Boca Helping Hands when Linda saw a fl yer about the Home Heath Aide Training and she signed up.  “I was between a rock and a hard place.  They (BHH) helped me to go back to school for my healthcare certifi cate after 25 years, Boca Helping Hands has been a blessing for me to further my career in the healthcare fi eld.” said Linda. With her certifi cations, Linda gained employment at the Empathy in Delray Beach and will also start a second job at the Broward Sheriff ’s Department, working with nurses inside the jail’s infi rmary.

Trina Chin Cheong, BHH's Program Director, invited Linda to share her story with the members of the Zonta Club. “I am so blessed that Boca Helping Hands gave me this opportunity,”  Linda told the group. “Boca Helping Hands helped me to sharpen my skills and helped to open up a lot of doors for me.”She took the initiative to earn extra certifi cates for OSHA, HIPAA, Patient's rights, and Assisting with Medication, also taking night classes to earn her GED.  Linda also took advantage of Job Mentoring Programs classes at Boca Helping Hands. Something that has had a long lasting impression on her is the sign in our reception area that reads: “Give a man a fi sh and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fi sh and you feed him for a lifetime.” – Lao Tzu

It has been said that every person wants to do one of three things… have a child, write a book or plant a

tree. The reason for this innate desire is obvious: We all want to leave something of lasting importance behind. We want to leave a legacy. We want those who follow us to be inspired by our example and follow suit. That is how we make the world better for generations to come.

Today, Boca Helping Hands has a unique opportunity for our supporters. So many people give generously to support the work of BHH and want to leave something of lasting importance behind. For this reason, Boca Helping Hands is proud to announce the formation of a Legacy Society…a society of those who have chosen to make a Planned Gift to Boca Helping Hands.

What is Planned Giving? Simply put, it describes the many fi nancial and investment vehicles someone can use to make a gift to Boca Helping Hands in the future! A planned gift can be as simple as adding Boca Helping Hands as a benefi ciary of an IRA, 401K, a life insurance policy, or by designating BHH among the recipients of one’s estate. Planned Giving vehicles include bequests, insurance policies, charitable lead trusts and gift annuities, as well as, certain gifts of real estate and artwork, among others.

Our Board of Directors has taken the bold step of creating an endowment for our future. The endowment will be funded by these Planned Gifts. We hope someday our operations will be funded entirely from the interest generated by the BHH Endowment. Its strength ensures the continuation of programs, as well as, the ability to

launch new initiatives. A strong endowment means that BHH would be prepared in the event of expensive repairs or modifi cations to our existing facilities. A strong endowment means that BHH will be in a position to acquire new facilities as our programs continue to grow and develop.

In short, a strong endowment means the future of Boca Helping Hands is secure. Those who so generously support our work today will continue to support our work into the future. A strong, dynamic Boca Helping Hands would be their legacy. The Planned Gift is the doorway to that future.

Those who want to make a Planned Gift should indicate this intention to Boca Helping Hands so that they can be properly recognized as a member of our Legacy Society. We also encourage individuals considering a Planned Gift to seek out the advice of their tax and/or investment professionals to insure their wishes are properly documented. Anyone interested in pursuing one of the many Planned Giving options and joining Boca Helping Hands’ Legacy Society is encouraged to contact our Executive Director, James S. Gavrilos for further information.

Well, Shakespeare said something like that, didn’t he? We live in a new world…a digital world. Boca Helping Hands is moving with the times, and many of our stakeholders have shared with us that they prefer receiving communication (like this newsletter) in an

“E” (Electronic) format. Since many people today read their mail, magazines and newspapers on e-readers and tablets, we want to off er that option. Let’s face it, electronic communications eliminate printing costs, postage fees and the time needed to fold, stuff and stamp a mailing. That being said, many stakeholders LIKE going to the mailbox and getting a Newsletter. We at BHH want to off er you either option! If you would prefer receiving all communications from Boca Helping Hands in an electronic format, please contact Karen Swedenborg ([email protected]) and let her know. Moving forward, you will receive Newsletters, Event Information and all BHH Mailings electronically…sent directly to your device. Those who prefer to continue receiving a “hard copy” need not do anything. You will continue receiving all communication through the U.S. Postal Service. Either way, we want all our stakeholders to stay informed at Boca Helping Hands. Thank you for all you do!
