SOCIAL MEDIA COMES OF AGE The 20th century was the information age, a time of continual unprecedented access to information and the ability to transfer it. Ten years in, the 21st century has been labeled the Attention Age, spurred by Web2.0 capabilities and characterized by the individual’s ability to create and share very targeted information via social networking.
The explosive growth of social networking has morphed the way we access, process and act on information. And we’ve reached this shifting paradigm in record time compared to past innovations. The ubiquitous Facebook, for example, turned six in February 2010, concurrently reaching a milestone of 400 million members globally. Four-year-old Twitter boasts more than one billion “tweets” per month, and as of January 2009, Technorati had indexed 133 million blogs since 2002.
Younger people, in particular, have “grown up” in the social networking environment, which makes the space particularly apt for how they consume information. In fact, this year, Gen Y—96% of whom have joined a social network—will outnumber Baby Boomers.*
