Report of Directors
CREW Members, Sponsors, and Supporters,
As 2021 draws to a close I reflect on the year it’s been. 2020 was a global “life-quake”. Our
perseverance both personally and professionally was tested. 2021 was an ambiguous journey to
move the dial back to “normal” life.
It’s with pride that I reflect on the 2021 accomplishments of CREW Vancouver. What a year it’s
been! We’ve collaborated, connected, pivoted, and worked diligently and passionately to further
our mandate of, “accelerating women in Commercial Real Estate.”
The below provides a highlight of our 2021 achievements.
Membership:
We exist to support our approximately 200 members. Our membership team under the direction
of Tina Lu had a banner year.
● Successfully launched the inaugural year of the CREW Vancouver Leadership Awards,
which recognizes and celebrates extraordinary leadership and success in the Vancouver
commercial real estate community. This year’s award ceremony was held on October 6th
at the Vancouver Club, jointly with our annual member appreciation event. The three
award categories and recipients are as followed:
○ Diana Lam, Rising Star – given to a member who has worked in the commercial
real estate industry for less than ten years and has distinguished themself amongst
their peers by making meaningful professional contributions that are outstanding
and unique
○ Regina Marklund, Woman of Influence – recognizes an experienced member who
has distinguished themself through leadership qualities, achievements and
commitments to their career, industry, and community at large
○ Gayle Hunter, Tribute – board selection award presented to a member of the
Vancouver Real Estate industry who has been instrumental in supporting the
growth and advancement of women in the industry.
● Revamped our members only Lunch and & Learn to focus on skill building seminars
facilitated by topic experts as guest speakers. Topics this year included:
○ Shine Online - How to Elevate Meeting Efficiency
○ Fundamentals of Leading Change
○ From Difficult to Effective Conversations
● Relaunched the New Members Breakfast and delivered three sessions virtually. Breakfast
goodies from Body Energy Club were delivered by Uber to each of our new members for a
joint virtual cheers and networking.
● Introduced a new member only networking series, CREW Community Connections. This is
a focused and intimate networking series designed to promote meaningful connections
between CREW Members within specific areas of the commercial real estate industry.
Topic of focus this year included: Acquisition and Disposition, Interior Design and Asset
and Property Management.
Stakeholder Relations:
Under the direction of Lauren Mackinnon, the Stakeholder Relations team expanded their
mandate and accomplished the following:
● Established IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity + Allyship) Subcommittee. The committee
formulated an IDEA Mandate document with a mission + initiatives the committee will
implement on an ongoing basis; the chair of the committee attended specific DEI training
to increase our overall knowledge of DEI and systemic discrimination, the committee is
creating resources for CREW members in the hopes of being an industry leader providing
DEI information + training, the committee has conducted a review of CREW portfolios and
generated a list of actions for each specific DEI category that are being implemented
ongoing.
● Created a new Volunteer + Board Director Application form, also introduced a Volunteer
Commitment Agreement to solidify commitment from committee members.
● Established a more robust Volunteer Appreciation Event; next year, a portion of these
awards are to be included in our CREW Leadership Awards event.
Events:
Under the direction of Karena Selnar and Maryam Bagheri, our Events team worked tirelessly to
create meaningful events that offered tremendous value to our membership and CREW
Community. The committee goals were to:
● Focus on the individual, both professionally and personally
● Provide value to members at all levels of their career
● Offer CREW Signature events that involve attendees from across the CREW Network
This year allowed the events team to incorporate select in-person events into what had been a
mostly virtual calendar in 2020.
● We kicked off the year with an engaging and interactive virtual workshop on Imposter
Syndrome with a CREW speaker favourite, Allison Kinnear.
● We took our events outside all year through the snow and sun to keep our community
strong and thriving while adhering to provincial guidelines.
○ Snowshoeing adventure on Cypress
○ Whyte Lake hike on the North Shore
○ Outdoor book club in the park in Coal Harbour
○ Vancouver Club Rooftop Mingler
○ Outdoor building tours and community market at Shop the Block in Brentwood
● We are excited to share that we sold out our highly anticipated and memorable golf
tournament at UBC, bringing the community back together on the golf course after a year
hiatus.
● We held a mid-year Economic Overview with Rennie’s Ryan Berlin and CREW
Vancouver’s Past President, Cindy MacMillan of Anthem.
● There were two industry leader events hosted by Chuck We of Hudson Pacific Properties
and CREW Vancouver President-Elect, Lauren MacKinnon of Glotman Simpson.
● We were able to host one of our most popular member events, Portraits and Prosecco,
bringing together 55 members at the Vancouver Club.
● We expanded our member’s access to educational and networking events by partnering
with other Canadian CREW Chapters and like-minded organizations, including a workshop
on financial independence with Trixie Rowein of Raymond James.
● We have collaborated with the membership committee to bring in experts from all areas of
the commercial real estate industry to host round table discussion opportunities around
development, interior design and asset management.
● We will close-out the year with one of our most popular events, the Winter Social, being
hosted at the Vancouver Club on November 25.
Given the ambiguous climate of 2021 I cannot thank the events team enough for their dedication,
commitment, and ability to pivot when required.
Finance & Governance:
Under the direction of Kristen Cheung, our Finance & Governance team worked diligently to
ensure we maintained our strong financial and governance position:
● Despite the ambiguity of 2021 we are on track to meet our budget for this fiscal year.
● Our Director of Finance has worked closely with board members to determine the financial
feasibility of our virtual and in person events, new leadership awards program, website
refresh and leadership and training sessions.
● We continued our timely review of expense claims and monthly financial statements.
● We have been proactively managing, administering our cash reserve, which has allowed
us to show stability through COVID-19.
● Our Governance sub-committee has been in effect for two years and continues to address
issues including:
○ Succession Planning: We establish a more immersive succession planning
process and smooth and thoughtful transition for our Board of Directors, committee
leads, and committee members.

optimized sponsorship program in place.

Mentorship Program, & Lift As We Rise Campaign

opportunities and exposure to the industry, and to provide value to members through the CREW
Vancouver mentorship program.

Sponsorship:
Under the direction of Michelle Yung and Michelle Roundell, our Sponsorship team had another
excellent year:
● With a huge thanks to all our sponsors we are excited to report that we had nearly 100%
return on sponsors for 2021 and new sponsors joining us despite COVID/economic
uncertainty. We thank you all for your support. We could not do what we do without your
generosity.
● With thanks to our Sponsors significant donations were made on behalf of sponsors to
local women's charities, in lieu of a thank you 2020 event.
● We engaged with our sponsors on an ongoing basis and held several meetings to get real-
time feedback on our efforts.
● We saw very successful sponsor engagement during our signature golf tournament.
CREW Foundation:
Under the Direction of our Past President, Cindy MacMillan our chapter was active in the CREW
Foundation’s ‘Lift As We Rise’ campaign which raised over $20,000 for scholarships, and saw
many of our members donate in honour of a leader who championed or inspired them in their
journey through commercial real estate. A donation of $1,000 was made on behalf of the chapter
by Jill Korstorom for her speaking services. The Foundation also published its annual Whitepaper
titled, A Catalyst for Change: COVID-19’s Impact on Women in Commercial Real Estate.
In Closing:
As we close out the year, I must send a special thanks to our volunteers and our sponsors. Our
volunteers are the engine that keeps us going. Our sponsors provide the financial fuel for us to
deliver on our mandate. To both those groups your commitment to CREW Vancouver is
extremely important to us. Thank you tremendously once again for your ongoing support.
While I have a tremendous number of special moments to reflect on over the last year, a highlight
for me was the ability for Canadian CREW Leaders to come together in September to participate
in the CREW Network Convention. Our network is thriving, growing, and continues to bring us
together.
Truly one of the greatest privileges of my life was to lead the CREW Board of Directors for the last
two years. Each of these accomplished women have been personally and professionally
committed to CREW Vancouver and our collective success has been the result.
In 2020 when our fiduciary duty as Board Members was challenged by unexpected global events
each Board member remained committed and served an additional year. Given our continued
ambiguous circumstances, this allowed us to hit the ground running and deliver to our
stakeholders in the most optimized manner.
Thank you to the below listed 2021 Board Members, for your support, encouragement, and
perseverance. We encountered adversity head on and came out stronger than ever together.
