Women’s participation in co-operatives and their economic empowerment are critical to achieving sustainable and inclusive growth. All CDF Canada projects address gender and socio-economic disparities as part of their design and implementation. In Colombia, our IMPACT project has helped ensure that women hold 90% of management/leadership positions in organizations participating in the project; In Northern Ghana, 1719 women learned to read and write through the literacy training component in the FOSTERING project, thus opening new financial and entrepreneurial opportunities for beneficiaries; In Peru, 35 women have created coffee nurseries and started producing and selling organic fertilizers to community members.

Access to financial services is central to supporting entrepreneurship and improving livelihoods, yet many people don’t access to such services because of a lack of assets or credit history. CDF Canada works to develop local technical capacity to lend and strengthen insurance schemes. In Malawi, our INVEST project has supported 44,762 farmers in accessing customized loan products, tailored to suit the needs of the smallholder farmer; In the Philippines – a country vulnerable to natural disasters – the PREMIUM project has helped 2,456 sari-sari store owners access calamity loans to boost their resilience during typhoons; The FOSTERING project has helped over 23,000 men and women start a small business (food processing or petty trading).

Addressing resilience in our interventions is vital to protecting human and socio-economic gains, while a focus on building local capacity, self-reliance and co-operation is key to enabling communities to grow beyond the life of a project. In Peru, CDF Canada’s INVEST project established a loan fund to help farmers purchase organic fertilizer. This has resulted in higher yields on over 1800 hectares of cacao and coffee plantations; In Rwanda, over 31, 000 farmers adopted sustainable water and land management techniques, including appropriate use of fertilizer, seeds and irrigation, resulting in higher crop production and lower land degradation; In Indonesia, aquaculture farmers in South Sulawesi are producing value-added seaweed-based snacks and beverages, and opening new market opportunities with support from INVEST project.

The program is competitive and targets credit union women leaders from Africa, Asia and South America. WMP focuses on strengthening the operational, professional and leadership skills of women managers and empowers them to become agents of change in their countries. By building stronger leaders in credits unions around the world, the Program supports improvements in the provision of and access to financial services and benefits countless individuals and communities.

‘‘ I developed my leadership, communication, negotiation and networking skills. Delinquency in my savings and credit co-operative declined from 16% to 6% in less than one year using the techniques we learned in Canada.

— Evelyn Antwi, WMP alumna

It’s an honour to share our co-operative leadership experiences through the WMP. As credit union operating environments become more complex, so does the need to collaborate across borders. When we come together with our talents and expertise, we innovate and build strong networks for the future of collaboration.

‘‘

— Shelley McDade, CEO, Sunshine Coast Credit Union

CDF Canada has been active in microinsurance for over 15 years. Our goal is to reduce the vulnerability of the poor to risk, illness and natural hazards. Our work supports financial institutions in transforming their informal insurance systems into sustainable, mutual insurance arrangements owned and capitalized by their members, resulting in: i) local decisions that respond to local needs; ii) value for members by controlling premiums, maximizing benefits and expediting claim payments.

CDF Canada has contributed to strengthening the microinsurance sector in the Philippines. It provided financial, technical and operational support to RIMANSI – an organization that works to develop insurance products for the poor – resulting in an increase of insurance policy holders from 100,000 to almost 6 million from 2005-18. Today, almost 80% of clients are women and over 95% of benefit claims are paid within 5 days.
