WELCOME TO EMMANUEL
We worship God and follow Jesus Christ,
learning and growing together in the Holy Spirit to serve in the world.
We will love & welcome ALL.
Welcome! We are grateful to have you worship with us. We believe that God loves everyone, no exceptions. This time of worship is an opportunity for us to give thanks to God with our presence and in prayer and song; and to seek strength, guidance, and healing through our prayers, readings, and the sacrament of Holy Communion. All who seek a deeper relationship with Christ through the sacrament of Holy Communion are invited to receive the blessed bread and wine. Please let the priest know if you desire a gluten free wafer. If you would prefer to receive a spoken blessing instead of the blessed bread and wine, when you come to the altar rail, please fold your arms across your chest as a sign of your desire to receive a blessing. If you are a visitor at Emmanuel, please sign our guest book in the front entryway or complete a “WELCOME” card located in the pew rack. Place the completed card in the offering plate or give it to an usher, greeter, or the priest so that we can respond appropriately. You may also contact the church office at 231-347-2350. Thank you for being with us today. Our worship is enriched by your presence and participation in the service. May the Holy Spirit bless you now and in all that you do.

COLLECT OF THE DAY BCP Page 214
FIRST READING Isaiah 42:1-9
Here is my servant, whom I uphold,
my chosen, in whom my soul delights;
I have put my spirit upon him;
he will bring forth justice to the nations.
He will not cry or lift up his voice,
or make it heard in the street;
a bruised reed he will not break,
and a dimly burning wick he will not quench;
he will faithfully bring forth justice.
He will not grow faint or be crushed
until he has established justice in the earth;
and the coastlands wait for his teaching.
Thus says God, the Lord,
who created the heavens and stretched them out,
who spread out the earth and what comes from it,
who gives breath to the people upon it
and spirit to those who walk in it:
I am the Lord, I have called you in righteousness,
I have taken you by the hand and kept you;
6
I have given you as a covenant to the people,
a light to the nations,
to open the eyes that are blind,
to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon,
from the prison those who sit in darkness.
I am the Lord, that is my name;
my glory I give to no other,
nor my praise to idols.
See, the former things have come to pass,
and new things I now declare;
before they spring forth,
I tell you of them.
Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

SECOND READING Acts 10:34-43 Peter began to speak to them: “I truly understand that God
shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him
and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the
message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by
Jesus Christ--he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout
Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John
announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy
Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and
healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with
him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in
Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but
God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not
to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as
witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from
the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to
testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living
and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone
who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his
name.” Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.
SEQUENCE HYMN Blue Hymnal #121
THE GOSPEL Matthew 3:13-17 Celebrant The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ
according to Matthew. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by
him. John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be
9
baptized by you, and do you come to me?” But Jesus answered
him, “Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to
fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. And when Jesus
had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly
the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God
descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from
heaven said, “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am
well pleased.” Celebrant The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THE PEACE BCP Page 360
OFFERTORY Words: Fred Pratt Green
Music: Trad. Irish, arr. Austin C. Lovelace “THE BAPTISM OF JESUS”
When Jesus came to Jordan
to be baptized by John,
He did not come for pardon,
but as the sinless one.
He came to share repentance
with all who mourn their sins,
To speak the vital sentence
with which good news begins.
He came to share temptation,
our utmost woe and loss;
For us and our salvation
to die upon the cross.
So when the Dove descended
on him, the Son of Man,
The hidden years had ended,
the age of grace began.
12
Come, Holy Spirit, aid us
to keep the vows we make;
This very day invade us,
and every bondage break.
Come, give our lives direction,
the gift we covet most:
To share the resurrection
that leads to Pentecost.

A PRAYER IN TIME OF DISCERNMENT Gracious and loving God,
We give you thanks for bringing us to this point
of mutual discernment. Be with the Search Committee members
as they prepare to engage with the candidates who
have offered themselves to this process.
Give them your grace, wisdom, and peace.
18
Be with the candidates
as they too seek to discern if they are called to lead
this congregation.
Give them your grace, wisdom, and peace.
May they and we be guided by your Spirit
As this process continues on
Save us from a false sense of urgency for closure.
Give us confidence in our decisions,
Knowing that you are preparing us for better things
than we can ask or imagine.
And in all ways may we give honor and glory to you
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Amen.
