At Emily Carr I was able to experiment with different media and found that video was very expressive. I had never worked with live action and delving into film changed my practice completely. I was able to collaborate with the international community of students working in different disciplines. The opportunities that arose from these partnerships were extremely influential in my work.

I chose Emily Carr because it is knowledgeable and considerate of indigenous peoples and art practices. I was mentored by people I respect and taught that being an artist is to be a practicer of art, not only someone who has made art in the past, but someone who continues to make art. You never stop being an art practicer.

Opportunities + ResearchArt, media and design are changing rapidly with new technologies, new modes of expression and new opportunities for research and employment.

Emily Carr leads the country in the contributions we make to research in studio- based art, media and design.

Students work with faculty and partners from industry, museums, galleries, government and community-based organizations to collaborate and address pressing issues of social and cultural change through research creation and exploration.

RESEARCH CENTRE IN FOCUS • HEALTH DESIGN LABThe Health Design Lab at Emily Carr provides design opportunities to students and faculty through collaborative partnerships that apply solution-focused, human- centred research methodologies to complex problems in health care.

Students have designed hundreds of solutions with partners, ranging from assistive devices and communication tools, mobile platforms and wheel chair designs, to recommendations for structural and systemic changes. Our work has been supported by companies like Stantec and Guard RFID, and non-profits such as Heart and Stroke and Kenneth Gordon Maplewood School.

For the past few years the Health Design Lab has collaborated with Fraser Health, Vancouver Coastal Health, and the Provincial Health Services Authority around a new Ministry of Health mandate to shift the culture of healthcare towards a more patient centred model. Projects have ranged from improving patient safety in hospitals, to considering new ways to empower and engage patients directly. Emily Carr students and faculty have hosted co-creation workshops with hundreds of representatives from across all areas of healthcare: patients, clinicians, nurses, allied professionals.

Through projects like this we are building the relationships and skills that allow our students to become the next generation of visionaries, influencers, and leaders across a wide spectrum of challenging social issues.

My studies at Emily Carr made me more critically aware of what art is and what it can be. The best part for me was the many opportunities to have a creative dialogue with other students and faculty to talk about the work. There are so many resources and people willing to help you achieve your vision.

ERIN BONNIFEROBFA, 2002Owner, Collage Collage

If you want to go out into the world and make this your profession you have to know what you are all about before you can carve out a place for yourself. Emily Carr gave me that community to draw from, and gave me the drive and the language to bring everything together. This isn’t just a hobby. This is a career that I have built for myself.

ANDREW ZOBDes, 2011Freelance, Packaging Designer

Many people can design something flashy and trendy. Emily Carr taught me to think further than just the appearance of a product. I learned to think critically, and to do the research needed to move beyond conventional approaches and assumptions. I developed the skills to create designs that work.

FARHEZ RAYANIBFA, 2010 (Interdisciplinary studies in Media Arts)Lighting Technical Director, Pixar Animation Studios

Emily Carr provides a solid foundation in Fine Arts while embracing interdisciplinary practice. This approach allows students to choose from a diverse range of courses in different disciplines and follow their own unique path of discovery. Don’t be afraid to try new things, and be open to the possibility that where you end up might be very different than you first imagined. It’s an amazing journey.
