The Presentation of the Lord
The origins of the feast of the Presentation of the Lord lie in
ancient Jewish custom. On the 40th day after childbirth,
parents brought their infant to the temple to present him/her
to the Lord and to purify the mother.
Count 40 days after Christmas, the day of Christ’s birth, and
you’ll come to February 2. St Luke tells us that Joseph and
Mary sacrificed two birds at the temple on this occasion.
Until the 1960s, this day was called “The Purification of
Mary”. The title changed for several reasons. We no longer
believe that women who give birth need purification, and the
true significance of the feast concerns Jesus coming to the
temple. He is the Promised One, whose light will shine,
beaming rays of hope to all the world.
The Mass of the Presentation of the Lord on February 2
begins with the blessing of lighted candles. We do this to
remember that Christ our Light illumines everything and
everyone. In the Gospel reading we hear Simeon and Anna
singing his praise. Elizabeth Harrington
New Parish Staff: The Jubilee Parish would like to welcome Therese Beavis as Pastoral
Associate (Bardon), Sinead Fitzgerald as Youth Minister who will be working closely with
Georgina Devenish-Meares and Terry Lewis as Groundsman. Please make them all feel
welcome as we are blessed to have them as part of the Jubilee Parish.
“The Little King’s Movement” once a year conducts a Parish Appeal,
a Door Knock supported by some Catholic Schools. The Movement
caters for people with disabilities in social and spiritual activities.
There is no Government funding and the Movement is staffed by
volunteers. Each year the calls for their services are increasing. The
Movement, though based on Catholic beliefs is truly ecumenical, and
all members are welcomed and respected for their own beliefs. There is no charge for
any of the services provided by the Movement.
If at this time you are unable to help financially you may be able to give of your time or
talents, if so please contact the Movement.
Please place donation envelopes on the collection plate or return to the parish office.
Reception into Full Communion: the local church rejoices with great joy as Pamela
Griffiths is received into full communion with the Catholic Church at St Joan of Arc this
Sunday morning. God has been her constant companion on her journey of faith whom
Pamela has been attentive to throughout her life. “Pamela, of your own free will you have
asked to be received into the full communion of the Catholic Church. You have made your
decision after careful thought under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. I now invite you to
come forward with your sponsor, Yvonne Carrigan and in the presence of this community
to profess the Catholic faith. In this faith you will be one with us for the first time at the

Plenary Council Listening and Discernment Sessions
2020 is the year of the Plenary Council! We’re now in the final
stages of consultation for this important national event for the
Church in Australia. Six national themes for discernment came
out of the Listening and Dialogue phase. You can read about
these at https://plenarycouncil.catholic.org.au/. Jubilee Parish
is offering the opportunity for you to participate in Listening and
Discernment sessions on these national themes. The first two
sessions will be:
Wednesday 5th February 7-9pm at the Parish Office. Theme: Missionary and
Evangelising
Saturday 15th February 10am -12 noon at the Parish Office. Theme: Inclusive,
participatory and synodal
Please RSVP to the Parish Office to assist our planning but, it’s ok, we’ll still be happy
to see you if you forget to rsvp.
Plenary Council DELEGATES: The Archbishop has invited expression of interest in being
a delegate at the Plenary Council. There are only 10 – 14 to go from the Archdiocese.
Six of these are the bishops and clergy vicars.
Invited delegates: − 4-8 delegates called from the Archdiocese from the ‘presbyters and
others of Christ’s faithful,’ that is: from amongst the clergy and the laity.
The letter is available from the office. The Archbishop names criteria for selection which
include: a demonstrated commitment to leadership in the Church and/or its ministries
and the living of the Gospel in the person’s life through both prayer and action.
“However, the chief thing to be considered is the person’s ability and capacity to discern
with an open heart, listening to what the Spirit is saying to the Church in Australia at
this time with an eye to the future.” There are a series of dates that people need to be
available for. Note too that the minimum required age for delegates is 16 years.
In order to be included in the selection process, expressions of interest should be sent
to [email protected] by 12.00 pm on Monday, 10 February 2020.
If you have questions, or if you require further information, please contact Eric Robinson, Plenary Council Co-ordinator for
the Archdiocese via email at [email protected] or by phone 07 3324 3440. Archbishop Mark Coleridge.
Seminarian Louie is here on pastoral placement for the year. He needs to get out of the books and into
parish. Please invite him to come to your group/ activity/ home. I need to get him out of the office and into
the coalface of parish life. Grab him and make a date in his diary. This is his formation as a future priest in
the Archdiocese.
Accolades: Each year various members of our parish are acknowledged in the Australia Day Honours list. Many continue
unsung. To all, our community is most grateful. One recognised this year is Gerry Dunford, a long-term parishioner at St
Brigid's Red Hill. Gerry received a Green Heart Award for his commitment to the conservation organisation, Men of The Trees
(MOTT). He commenced his long and dedicated commitment to creek rehabilitation and forest restoration when he joined
MOTT, in 1993 as a volunteer, to help establish MOTT’s native plant nursery at The Gap. Well done Gerry!

Vinnies Bushfire Appeal: Thank you for your support last weekend and from before that. During the
bushfire crisis, Vinnies volunteers are on the ground in hundreds of communities across the country. Our
volunteers live and work in the impacted communities and will stay alongside those people affected for
the long months of recovery ahead.
Vinnies has from day one been in communities providing assistance from our own funds and over the
past three weeks has been actively distributing assistance from the Vinnies Bushfire Appeal. This includes
financial packages; essential items such as food, water, clothing and bedding; and emotional support for those affected by
the bushfires.”

his only Son, our Lord, who was
conceived by the Holy Spirit,
(all bow)
