What is Computing?

Generally, Computing is defined to mean any goal-oriented activity requiring, benefiting from, or creating computers. It includes designing and building hardware and software systems for a wide range of purposes;

processing, structuring, and managing various kinds of information; doing scientific studies using computers; making computer systems behave intelligently; creating and using communications and entertainment media; finding and gathering information relevant to any particular purpose, and so on.

The list is virtually endless, and the possibilities are vast."

Merits of Embracing Computing Computing has had a deep impact on the education sector. Thanks

to computers, imparting education has become easier and much more interesting than before. Embracing computing has been supported mainly by :

• Government policies – Computer studies implementation in secondary schools, free computer donations to government schools, waiving of taxes from computers making them cheap, Establishment of the Ministry of ICT and UCC

• Telecom companies – Cheap internet (modems), accessories• International support – Google, Intel, • e.t.c

Merits of embracing computingThe merits of computers in education primarily include:• Storage of information especially for backup purposes.

memory capacities of computers enable large chunks of data to be stored in them.

• Quick data processing – Student Report generation, staff and student registration systems, accounting systems

• Audio-visual aids in teaching – E-learning systems have made distant learning possible, projectors, Smart boards

• Resource allocation: bandwidth, internet, e.t.c

Merits of Embracing ComputingGenerally computing can further be relevant in many other

ways like: • Networking – sharing Peripherals(printers, faxes ), files –

Google docs, …• Security- Use of passwords and encryption algorithms,

firewalls, differentiation of users• Monitoring and control – employees activities and use

of services: s/w’s like VNC, remote desktop connection • Job market – internationally (Free lance jobs) -

outsourcing, ICT entrepreneurs, >>>> • Advertisement – School websites, social groups (FB,
