Today the season of Advent begins the journey of spiritual renewal that marks the beginning of our

new year. Like no other time the voices of the prophets who proclaim the Messiah ring out in the

liturgy, asking for conversion of heart and for prayer. John the Baptist, the last of these prophets

and the greatest, cries out: "Prepare the way of the Lord!" (Lk 3: 4), because he "will come to visit

his people in peace."

We move into God’s unfolding future by first focusing on conversion of heart. We need to be free

to, as the opening prayer for Mass today says: “run forth to meet our Christ.” The conversion of

heart begins in the first half of Advent, by renewing our awareness that God’s plan is that Christ

will return to judge and complete the work of redemption. Our only time to prepare for such final

things is now – so let us prepare ourselves. As Jesus says in today’s gospel, (from Matthew for the

coming year), “Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come.”

Let us then convert our lives that we might move into the future being shaped by God’s ways and

not being deluded that we are masters of our own destiny. We may be masters of our own careers,

our own resumes, our stock portfolio, but God is shaping our destiny. This can be a sobering

reflection, but no less true for being sobering!

At some point in Advent we will be aware of the need for increased humility before the truth that

we do not know the hour and that in turn will lead us to feel contrite about our past lives and our

need to be reconciled with God. Preparing to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation is a blessed

means of conversion of heart. Reconciliation Services will be held at St. John, Westminster on

December. 5th; Resurrection, Ellicott City on Dec. 12th and our own at St. Joseph on December.

15th.

We prepare for God’s advent secondly by prayer. I cannot urge you enough to avail of the

readings for daily Mass for Advent. The selections made for these days is a superb collection,

drawing considerably from Isaiah and of course in later Advent opening us the Old Testament texts

that give us insight into Mary’s role in God’s plan of coming into the world in human flesh. I

encourage you to use www.usccb.org each day to pray these wonderful readings. See below where

I invite you to consider a special prayer opportunity this Advent.

Fr. Neville O’Donohue S.M.

Pastor

From the Pastor’s Desk…

I strongly encourage adult members of St. Joseph to consider undertaking the Week of

Guided Prayer that begins next Sunday, December 4th. This special week will require a

commitment of time: time to pray for some 30 to 40 minutes each day and time to meet

your prayer guide for 15 or 20 minutes each day. This is a very special opportunity and if

you have any questions about your preparedness or how the week will work please contact

Fr. John Worgul or myself. -Fr. Neville

Stewardship Moment First Sunday of Advent

Weekend of November 26/27, 2016

On this first Sunday of Advent Jesus urges

his disciples to stay awake and prepare themselves for the Lord’s coming. Good stewards prepare themselves and await Christ’s judgment in joyous expectation.

This kind of attitude requires genuine spiritual maturity, the kind that is cultivated by prayer, participation in the sacraments,

loving attention to family and one’s communion of faith, and love for one’s

neighbor. Are we prepared for the Lord’s second coming? Are we ready to receive Christ? Are we ready to look joyously for

Christ’s judgment?

Faith Direct

With the busy times of Thanksgiving and the

Season of Advent coming up, enrolling in Faith Direct

today is a great way to ensure your gifts to St.

Joseph Catholic Community are received

even while you are traveling for the

holidays. Already using Faith Direct? Don't forget to add your Christmas or End-of-Year contributions to your account this fall. Visit www.faithdirect.net

and use our church code: MD80. Thank you for your continued support of our

parish family!

Thinking about a donation

to St Joseph’s?

Did you know that one may donate appreciated stock

to the St Joseph Catholic Community and get a tax

deduction for the current market value and not have

to sell the stock and pay the capital gains? A $5,000

cash gift and a gift of $5,000 in appreciated securities

both generate the same charitable deduction. But if

you use publicly traded stocks, bonds, or mutual fund

shares that you have held for a year or longer to make

your gift, you will receive an additional tax benefit:

The IRS allows you to make your transfer to the St

Joseph Community without recognizing capital gains

on the appreciation. You can thus leverage a larger

donation than you could make with cash — and

receive a larger tax benefit — by "buying low and

giving high." If you need additional information on

anything related to planned giving, feel free to

contact Bruce Goodwin at 410 978-0260 or

[email protected]

SJCC Parish Pastoral Council Meeting Minutes – November 2, 2016

The meeting opened and closed with prayer, led by Carole Gauthier.

Archdiocesan Planning Process -- Self Assessment: Members of the Council reflected on five of the core mission

priorities presented by the Archdiocese (Liturgy, Welcome, Encounter, Accompaniment and Sending) to identify

how SJCC is currently supporting these missions and how it could improve. Subgroups met to summarize their

observations, and the results will be shared with the Parish Planning subcommittee.

Pastor's Report:

Dee Papania will be attending the parish staff meetings on 11/8 and 12/20 as they also continue to move forward

with the parish planning process.

The recent invitation to the parish to complete a Survey Monkey to provide feedback about the proposed

pastorate assignments yielded 136 replies. Five representatives from SJCC will attend a meeting with the

Archdiocese on 11/10 to continue discussions about pastorate assignments.

Fr. Neville thanked Sharon Borcherding and the Service, Justice and Life Commission for agreeing to undertake

the running of a Respect Life program. Such a program will continue annually beginning with a 12-month

session starting February 1, 2017, divided into 3-4 themes per year.

Fr. Neville expressed how much he thoroughly enjoyed Clergy Appreciation Day and expressed deep gratitude

to the Vocations Committee on behalf of himself, as well as the other priests, deacons and brothers, for the

efforts of all involved. He felt it was a perfect example of how to do something in the Church -- cross-

functional and fully integrated.

Announcements:

Keith McQuay -- Liturgy Commission met on 10/11. Despite their efforts at the Ministry Fair to encourage

additional volunteers to attend meetings, they had no new sign-ups. They discussed the parish plan,

reviewed different types of prayers and how they may be incorporated, and also discussed new missals for

the pews.

Bob Bastress -- Christian Formation Commission met on 10/24 and discussed the needs surrounding the young

adult groups at SJCC.

Sharon Borcherding -- Service, Justice and Life met on 10/10. There will be a bulletin insert regarding

upcoming legislation about assisted suicide. They will be sponsoring the Giving Tree again this year. Plans

for the Alternative Christmas Market to be held on 12/3 and 12/4 are underway.

Kim Fleming -- The Community Outreach Committe of the Evangelization Commission is helping to serve beer

at the Sykesville Chili and Beer Festival. All are welcome.

Tim Thimmesch expressed thanks to Carole Gauthier for her help in creating the display materials used at the

Ministry Fair and to Jimmy Hockett, Gwen Lilly and Tom White for helping to man the table and represent

the PPC.

Tim Thimmesch encouraged PPC members to follow a model of reflecting on and faith-sharing about the

upcoming week's scripture as an opening prayer activity for PPC and commission meetings. Maria Klicpera

indicated that she and Fr. Neville are available to assist anybody who needs guidance or resources to get

started.

Attendance: Fr. Neville O’Donohue, S.M., Jimmy Hockett, Josh Thiem, Tom White, Madeline Jones, Tim

Thimmesch, Matthew Antonishak, Carole Gauthier, Gwen Lilly, Christy Sommerville, Laura Bird, Bob Bastress,

Keith McQuay, Sharon Borcherding, Sue Wilson, Ron Gauthier (for Finance), Kim Fleming (for Evangelization)

Guests: Maria Klicpera, Chris Patrick, Karen Spivey

The next PPC meeting is Wednesday, December 7, 2016, at 7pm in the Tonry Room. Parishioners are welcome to
