Wally BourdelovMessage from our CEO

Join Team Finnan’s Gift

Greetings to the Embracia Family and potential new family members, be you staff, residents or the families of both. This is my first newsletter message as the new Chief Executive Officer of Embracia, having joined the company in May this year. In these first few months in the job, I am struck by the vibrant nature of our business and the positivity and commitment of our wider team. These are very important qualities and unfortunately a little on the “rarer” side in parts of our wider industry.

As you would be increasingly aware, the Government has recently, from 1 July, introduced considerable reform into the aged care industry. Even though attempts have been made to widely communicate these reforms, many do not fully understand aspects of it or for various reasons have not seen some of the information regarding it. The core value under pinning the changes has been the governments desire to offer our older population greater choice in aged care services along with expanded choice in funding this care. Another aspect of the reforms has been changes introduced by the Government in relations to assets determination and means tests in relation to pension entitlements and aged care funding support. Some of these aspects can be complicated, so the counsel of a good Financial Advisor, versed in these matters is highly recommended.Embracia has made a lot of effort to update our website with up to date, simple to understand information and useful tips. We provide an excellent interactive live chat service through our web site to assist users to navigate the site and to assist with queries and help make appointments. Our management team have undergone considerable training in relation to the reforms and are well positioned to assist you with your questions and provide you with valuable information and resources. Embracia provides total commitment to keep our people updated through all changes, so that our knowledge and resources are current and you are the timely beneficiary of our help and support.I look forward to meeting as many of you as I can, during my visits to our homes and villages.Thank you

On Sunday 12th October 2014 Embracia will be joining Finnan’s Gift founders Alisa and Oliver Camplin-Warner to participate in the Melbourne Marathon. The event will fundraise for The Royal Children's Hospital. With a goal of raising $250,000 to purchase four pumps for the life support machines for the hospital, Finnan’s Gift is forming a team – and we’re all welcome to join in the fun and likely, sweat. Get a group together; your family, work colleagues and friends and decide which event to run or walk - in the half-marathon, 10k, 5k or 3k.“A really strong team spirit has developed among the thousands of Finnan’s Gift supporters and this gives us all an opportunity to connect in a fun and meaningful way”. Matching personal interestswith meaningful activities

Residents paintedtheir courtyard fence

Empowering our residents is one of Embracia’s six values. The integration of the Montessori model of care at our Embracia on Ashley home has seen significant changes to the health and wellbeing of 15 residents living with dementia. Families and staff saw changes in their mother or father that included a return to completing everyday tasks themselves; an increase in overall happiness and a reduction in the need for some medication.Residential Service Manager Kate Gyles initiated the Montessori program at Ashley having seen the significant impact it has had on residents at Rural Northwest Health. The program was developed by Dr Maria Montessori, an Italian physician and childhood educator working in the early 1900s. Her philosophy and mission was to enable individuals to be as independent as possible, to have a meaningful place in their community, to possess high self-esteem and to have the chance to make meaningful contributions to their community. Over a year, she steered her care, lifestyle and support staff to deliver the program to residents of the home’s Memory Support household. By working with procedural memory and compensating for declarative memory loss by providing a supportive environment, Kate and her team have had the pleasure of seeing positive impacts for their residents. These have included lower incidences of agitation and an increased participation in daily activities – including the painting of their courtyard fence, that has produced a visual difference to their surroundings. Sharing the home’s journey at the LASA Lifestyle and Leisure Conference in March this year, Kate gave insights into the value of the program. “ Residents are socialising, they’re doing meaningful activities that are needed. They’re given tasks that are a genuine position of responsibility within their community.”The tasks associated with setting up for breakfast are allocated to individual residents. A resident pours the drinks; another sets out placemats and cutlery and another pours the cereal into bowls. Each of the 15 residents learnt to do all tasks through rehabilitative

activity. Staff supported residents by developing the forgotten skills for five minutes every hour. Additionally, other daily activities are designed to reflect a resident’s interests. For example, a resident who was a seamstress was given a pictorial matching activity featuring sewing images.

“It’s brilliant for their self esteem to be able to excel at something again.” Kate shares. Embracia on Ashley has integrated Montessori through all aspects of the Memory Support community. Elements are evident each day at Ashley for both procedural and declarative memory. While resident’s procedural memory is improved upon with task-focused activities, they are also exposed to signs and images within their home’s that appeal to their declarative memory. For example, directional signage support their ability to find their room, lounge and dining areas. By placing a bookcase decal on double doors, it was noted that residents no longer showed signs of frustration at not being able to open the doors. The benefits of implementing Montessori into all aspects of daily life was crucial for it’s success. “It was important to us that we give our residents the opportunity to empower residents at every opportunity.” Kate explains why all staff were trained. “We didn’t want it to be just a one-hour-a-week lifestyle option. We had seen the outcomes for residents who have benefited from a wholly integrated program.”Dr Maria Montessori’s philosophy and mission of ensuring people have a meaningful place in their community and to enable individuals to be as independent as possible is living on at Embracia. We invite you to watch John, the son of Dulcie, a resident at Ashley, speak about the significant improvement in his mother, Dulcie’s wellbeing since her move to the Memory Support household.Go to Facebook or Google + http://goo.gl/xv9WOO

Living a fulfilling and empowered life continues when our residents move into our homes. Embracia has adopted the Eden Alternative™ philosophy and there are many examples in each of our homes of residents initiating activities and events that are meaningful to them. On Thursday 10th July, our Lynbrook aged care home residents saw a recent project they had instigated come to fruition.Embracia in Lynbrook residents, with support from their Lifestyle team, collaborated with the Dandenong and Cranbourne RSL to install a flagpole adjacent to the front entrance of their home. It was marked by a Flag Raising Ceremony and followed by an afternoon tea. The event was attended by residents and their families, staff, The City of Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett and Deputy Mayor Amanda Stapledon of Casey City Council, MP Anthony Burne, Federal Member for Holt and MP Luke Donnellan, State Member for Narre Warren North. The Vice President of the Dandenong and Cranbourne RSL, Frank Ferguson, RSL Welfare Officer, Vladimir Nagorny, and several RSL representatives supported the residents in their endeavour to have a flag and flagpole erected at the front of the home. Despite the darkened clouds threatening to spill on the ceremony, the flag was raised with the afternoon continuing in the warmth of the home’s theatre.

About the Eden AlternativeThe Eden Alternative™ is a philosophy based on ensuring health, wellness and quality of life within our aged care communities. There are 10 principles that encourage everyone to view ageing and moving into aged care as a continuation of a life worth living, where people continue to learn, grow and remain in charge of their destiny. The 10 principles of the Eden Alternative™ show how companionship and caring for other people and things such as plants, animals and children can improve residents’ quality of life. It is about ensuring variety and spontaneity remain an integral part of everyday life and that life isn’t too structured with rules and routines. The philosophy compliments Embracia core values of family, teamwork, personalised service, empowerment and fun. The stunning colours, numerous varieties and sheer sizes of Melbourne’s lilies were admired by the Embracia in Templestowe residents who visited the Yarra Junction lily farm recently.Resident Bill Liddell suggested a visit to Melbourne’s Biggest Water Lilies after hearing about it on the radio. The Lifestyle teamorganised the trip which included viewing an Amazon lily that grows to 4ft in diameter and can be large enough to support the weight of a small child.

National Volunteer Week is an initiative of the national peak body for volunteering, Volunteering Australia. Held annually in May it is an opportunity for our management team to thank the people who add to our residents’ lives in many different ways. Each of our aged care homes have a team of inspiring and generous people who donate their time to support our staff. On Friday 23rd May the Embracia in Glasshouse Country management team took their volunteers to lunch to say thank you - a small token of appreciation for all they do and the passion with which they do it. This year Chateau Cedarton restaurant was the venue and everyone enjoyed a two-course meal in beautiful surroundings with spectacular views. Christine Hawkes, Residential Service Manager shared, “It is a privilege to take these very special people out to lunch and enjoy their company. They all work so hard as volunteers and there just aren’t enough words to thank them”.Trina Haylock, the home’s creative Lifestyle Coordinator, has penned a poem to describe the talents of our generous volunteers.

The characters and colour of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland – the Lewis Carroll novel of 1865, came to life at Embracia on the Peninsula. The home’s Lifestyle Coordinator, Lou Thompson, was looking for an event that would get everyone at the home involved. The inspiration for a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party was planted and Lou set about coordinating the home’s residents, staff and volunteers to put on a memorable Tea Party for residents, their families and friends. Creating the spectacular, themed event to rival musical theatre productions involved woodwork, craft, and art groups. The Men’s group used their woodwork area to build the planter boxes that held the giant balloon-flowers and cut out the toadstools from wood and Shirley, a resident, painted them in the home’s arts room. The residents in the produced the intricate tea cup ice-cream cones complete with mini pretzels for handles and the eponymous deck of cards and clock faces to decorate the room. Anticipation and excitement for the Tea Party began the afternoon before as the home’s main living room was transformed by residents, staff, volunteers and aged care students were on placement. On the day a three-tiered Mad Hatter’s cake, exquisitely decorated by Clinical Care Coordinator, Jane McCafferty, and a tea cup carved from watermelon by Lifestyle Assistant Michelle, took centre stage. The staff served tea to residents at brightly coloured tables. Everyone not only enjoyed ‘Alice in Wonderland’ themed treats and decorations but were entertained by a white rabbit and an ‘Alice’ quiz by Lou in full Queen of Hearts regalia. The Lifestyle team have set themselves their next challenge - to create an even more entertaining,fun-filled occasion for their residents. Subscribe to our newsletter online for updates on their Hawaiian-themed event. Community means different things to different people. For some it means having friends and family close; for others it’s living close to the hub of the action; for others still it means making a contribution to improving the welfare of their neighbourhood. Embracia in Woodford in Queensland is a culmination of all these three definitions. The sense of community started right from the beginning when Embracia was approached by the Woodford Aged Care Association. This group of local residents were proactive and instrumental in bringing Embracia aged care to the rural township.Despite our Archer Street aged care home not opening until early 2015, Embracia is feeling very much a part of the Woodford community. Local craftisans are being coordinated by 20-year local Rhonda Afoo to create 75 quilts for 75 beds. This project is designed to welcome and provide a handcrafted blanket to each resident as they relocate to Embracia. The Woodford Show - held on the 20 and 21 June at the local showgrounds - hosted a photography contest and our home’s evolution was featured by a local – and as yet anonymous – resident. Construction of the 75-bed aged care home on Archer and Margaret Streets is well under way. When the home opens in early 2015, it will be the fourth home in Queensland alongside its sister homes in Bongaree on Bribie Island, Beerwah and Deception Bay. We’re already feeling embraced by Woodford and we’re looking forward to caring for its residents next year. On ANZAC Day in 2015, Australia willcommemorate 100 years sinceANZACs landed at Gallipoli. In the lead up to this occasion severalof our Embracia in Glasshouse CountryRetirement Village residents havedecided to participate in 5,000 Poppies– an Australian and New Zealand-wide craft project. The residents are crocheting, knitting, creating poppies with felt or sewing them in any shade of red. 70 poppies have already been crafted using the residents own resources. They will continue to make as many poppies as possible until the first Friday in October when they will go on display at the Beerwah Library until November this year. They will also be included in the Remembrance Day commemoration at Melbourne’s Federation Square on 15 March 2015. It is sure to be a visually stunning and moving tribute to Australian servicemen and women. Embracia aged care has been established for more than 25 years. During that time we’ve enjoyed celebratingthe many milestones of both residents and staff. A recent achievement was the ten year anniversary of our Embracia on Bribie aged care home on 15 April 2014. A day of celebration was hosted by Residential Service Manager Vicki Gilbert at our home for residents, their families and Embracia staff and volunteers. A morning tea and a buffet lunch were complemented with all-day entertainment. The roaming trio of musicians, The Uke Dukes, stirred memories with favourite melodies. A daughter of one of our residents shared that she usually has trouble communicating with Dad yet he was singing along to every word of the songs the group performed. Children and adults alike were face painted or amused by staff member Natalie who wowed her audience with her balloon artistry. Keithy the Clown was an onslaught of colour as he made his way through the five house-holds and it proved very difficult to keep a straight face in his presence. Everyone was encouraged to enjoy the day’s sunshine by visiting the animal petting farm of goats, sheep and a llama in one of the enclosed outdoor areas. Several employees also reached their ten year anniversary as part of the Embracia family and a separate celebration was held at the end of the day to acknowledge and thank them for their dedication. Unsurprisingly, there were many conversations throughout the day by staff remembering residents who they had had the privilege of caring for at Embracia. We invite you to view all the photos on our Google + page at http://goo.gl/uUjcF8Read the article on the Embracia News and Media webpage. www.embracia.com.au/news-and-media
