Stroke refers to the
blockage of arterial access

A type of ischemic
stroke that occurs when ablood clot or a cholesterol
plaque wanders into thebrain and becomes trapped
inside an artery
Causes:
Septic Emboli
Atmospheric air Embolic myxoma
Deep venous thromboses
Cerebral embolism

Modifiable high blood pressure
high cholesterol
smoking diabetes
obesity
drug abuse
heavy alcoholconsumption
Non-modifiable age
gender race
Hispanics
Signs and symptoms:
paralysis and numbness cognitive impairment
vision impairment language impairment

headacheDiagnostic Tests:
CT Scan MRI
Angiogram
Carotid Duplex Transcranial Dopler
Echocardiogram
Management:
Medical

dissolve the blood clot thatis causing the stroke
bleeding (e.g.,easy bruising, bleedinggums, pink/bloody urine,
black/bloody stools, vomit
that looks like coffeegrounds, dizziness,
lightheadedness),symptoms of a blood clot
(e.g., swelling/pain in armor near catheter).

Rehabilitation
The rehabilitation processcan include some or all ofthe following:
speech therapy torelearn talking and
swallowing;
occupationaltherapy to regain dexterity
in the arms and hands;
physical therapy
to improve strength andwalking; and
family education
to orient them in caring fortheir loved one at home and
the challenges they will
face.

Nursing Diagnosis:Dx: Impaired verbalcommunication r/t loss of
facial or oral muscle tonecontrol
Plan: Will establish method
of communication in whichneeds can be expressed
Intervention: Provide
alternative methods ofcommunication, like
pictures & visual cues,
gestures & demonstration Anticipate &
provide for patients needs Encourage family
members to persists effort
to communicate with the
patient
Impaired tissue perfusion Impaired airway
clearance Impaired physical
mobility
Impaired swallowing
Research:
In contrast to these
commonly reported results,this retrospective study
demonstrated a 12.7%
incidence of poststrokeseizure and a 4.3%
incidence of poststrokeepilepsy in patients with
clearly defined embolic
stroke.According to Dr. Palade,
while the results of thisretrospective study were
somewhat surprising, Weset out to demonstrate that
careful identification of the
source of the emboluswould allow a more
accurate estimate of the
frequency of poststroke
seizures and epilepsy thanpreviously reported. Our
goal was to increaseawareness of the efficacy ofthis approach.
