The smell of turtles along the riverbank is like nectar to a bee for these two sniffi n’ dogs.

The section of Zeke’s Brook from 14 Wing Greenwood’s main gate west to the Annapolis River was the scene of a wood turtle hunting trip by researchers and volunteers with the Clean Annapolis River Project August 23 and 24.

“These turtles - more than any other species we’ve tracked – the dogs like their smell,” says Simon Gadbois, a Dalhousie University faculty member in the psychology and neuroscience department.

found a turtle, the plan would be to take it back to CARP’s offi ce for a 24-hour period. It would be weighed, measured, sexed, aged and then have a small radio transmitter epoxyed to its back. When the turtle is returned to the same place it was found, CARP can then track it. The one turtle it is watching this summer, “Little Earl,” per-haps between 30 and 40 years

old; is visited every week, and he seems to stick pretty close to the same territory.

“We know there are threats to the turtles, maybe from ag-ricultural practices,” Hann said, as an example to challenges to turtle habitat, “and there may be plans we could put in place to help.”

After the search, Hann re-ports no wood turtles were found by the team: “but it’s excellent habitat.”

Museum

Vintage Wings of Canada from Gatineau, Quebec has a “fl ying museum” collection of 18 Second World War-era aircraft, including ones flown during the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP) under the name “Yellow Wings.” These pristine-condition aircraft are not displayed in a cosy hangar gathering dust, but are taken to the skies of Canada and shared with aviation enthusiasts.

Included in its mandate is to return to small airstrips across Canada once used for training aircrew from many parts of the world for the war effort. Yarmouth, Greenwood, Stanley, Debert, Shearwater and Sydney were such bases; a major part of the travelling show this year stopped at 14 Wing Green-wood July 27 with the Fleet Finch, deHavilland Tiger Moth, North American Harvard and the Fairchild Cornell.

To commemorate this com-munity’s involvement in the BCATP and the young men who enlisted for air training, some veterans were given a fl ight in one of these immaculate aircraft. Greenwood played host to and witnessed a 91-year-old-veteran, who fi rst learned to fl y in the Ti-ger Moth. Arthur “Sparky” Trav-ers, born in Kildare Capes, PEI in 1921, enlisted in the Army Engi-

‘Sparky’ flies again

neers in 1941 and transferred in December to the Royal Canadian Air Force as a pilot trainee. He fi rst fl ew the deHavilland Tiger Moth in 1942 at Goderich and St. Thomas, Ontario, followed by the twin-engine Anson, which he fl ew as captain until 1945 at Valcartier, Quebec.

Family friend and Greenwood Military Aviation Museum pro-ponent Troy Kirkby, a Wind-sor business owner, contacted Yellow Wings and arranged a personal flight for Travers in the Tiger Moth, 70 years after his solo fl ight at Goderich. Todd Lemieux, a commercial pilot and Yellow Wings volunteer, fl ies the

Tiger Moth, and accepted the honour of taking one of Canada’s veterans up. Once they reached 500 feet, Lemieux gave the con-trols to Travers and sat back. In less than fi ve minutes Travers recalled his training of 70 years ago and fl ew in complete control of the fragile vintage aircraft, Lemieux reported. The magneto switches are located near the front cockpit, so Travers was given the task of turning these on and off when instructed by Lemieux, piloting from the rear cockpit. On landing, Lemieux’s instruction, “magnetos off,” was followed instantly by Travers’ reply: “magnetos off.”

At Valcartier, Travers met and married a pretty nurse, Phyl-lis, and the couple reared six children. The Travers moved to Dartmouth in 1979, where Travers built a contracting and consulting fi rm. Almost retired, Travers and Phyllis now reside in Alberton, PEI near the fam-ily homestead at Kildare Capes, where he still fl ies with his son, Scott, and where he and Phyllis also have their summer cottage.

This fall, the Greenwood Mili-tary Aviation Museum will have its restored Anson on display in a new extension and will invite Travers for another trip down memory lane.

class, and our men and women need and deserve a leader in uniform who refl ects and up-holds that high standard. They have had that type of leadership to date, and I’m pleased to tell you that that will continue.

“Lieutenant-General Lawson is an exceptional, dynamic leader who brings a great deal of domestic, international and operational experience to the table. He has the respect of his peers, the admiration of his subordinates and our allies, and the complete confi dence of both the prime minister and myself.”

Mackay said Lawson is com-ing into the role at an important time for the Canadian Forces, through continued adjustment and defence transformation.

General Walt Natynczyk, Chief of the Defence Staff, congratu-lated Lawson on his appoint-ment to succeed him.

“I know he will enjoy the support of great generals, ad-mirals, offi cers and, equally, all the ranks, through to the most junior privates and ordinary seamen. It is an honour to serve

Canada, the men and women in uniform and their families and to make a contribution for peace and security.”

The prime minister thanked Natynczyk for his exemplary leadership since July 2008, and wished him the best in his future endeavours. Mackay called Natynczyk an “outstand-ing leader and champion for the Canadian Forces in every sense of the word.

“He has been extraordinarily effective, compassionate, and

hands-on leader who has deliv-ered for the Forces, and thanks in no small part to his com-mitment and dedication, the Canadian Forces have vaulted forward in their capabilities to defend Canada and its interests domestically and around the world. He has been particularly effective in promoting the inter-ests of military families and our ill and injured.”

The change of command ceremony will take place in the coming weeks.

HOUSE OF COMMONS CHAMBRE DES COMMUNES

Don Lacroix,ZX Squash Club

The squash season is upon once again, and the 14 Wing Greenwood ZX squash club is looking forward to a new and exciting season.

For those of you who haven’t tried the sport, all I can say is…”addictive.” It’s a great,

all around sport that provides one of the best workouts you’re ever going to get, with an emphasis on cardio, hand/ eye co-ordination and speed. For those of you into cross-training (particularly hockey players), look no further.

Based on the positive feed-back from last year, the club will continue league play again

this season, with more infor-mation to come. We’d like to see more players from all age groups and fi tness levels - and that includes the ladies. To that end, Janet MacLeod, one of the top female players in the province, is hoping to lead a ladies’ clinic. We will have court time for novice players, with more experienced players

on hand to teach you the basics.

Get set for squash seasonFor information on the ZX

club, contact Don Lacroix, 341-2249 or [email protected].

See you on the courts!

The Privacy Code for Military Family Services Program
