From  the  EditorIn this issue of East Lancs Plus we’re bringing you some fantastic news about various events that are happening soon including the Jamboree on the Internet/Airwaves and of course, all your adult training dates!

It is much anticipated, but we’re also bringing you the fantastic news about the 23rd World Scout Jamboree in 2015 in Japan! Wow! I won’t spoil the surprise now, but a quick hint - there’s more info on pages 9 and 10!

We’ve also had a chat to the Blue Peter presenter Barney Harwood about the magic of Scouting as well as Louise Cooper, a GSL from Rossendale on the success of setting up a new section in an existing group!

Don’t forget that we’re always looking for content and pictures - no matter what event they’re from! If you’d like to give us a hand putting East Lancs Plus together whether that be proof-reading our final version or writing an article (you never know, you might get to interview some famous people!) or taking a couple of photos, we’d be much appreciated!

In the next issue: Meet your new Jamboree Leadership Team and we meet the county team!

Yours in Scouting,

ChrisChris Taylor - [email protected]

WELCOMEAdventure is at the heart of everything we do.

It is the single most important thing that sets Scouts apart. As we enter the long hot summer (?!?) we embark on what for many is the main period during which we deliver fun and challenging activities to our young people.

At this time please remember it is the responsibility of all those involved in Scouting to seek, so far is reasonably practicable, to ensure that all activities are conducted in a safe manner without risk to the health of participants.

Scouts are in the news all the time, each month more than 70 positive mentions are made on the radio, TV and in the papers, make sure your fun in the sun is reported in the media for all the right reasons.

Enjoy your summer Scouting whether at home or abroad, rain or shine!

Yours in Scouting,

GlenGlen FendallCounty Commissioner

Adult volunteers are the heart of Scouting, and we hope that you get every bit as much out of it as you put in. Scouting is not only about young people, but also about the development of adults within the Movement.

To support adults in Scouting, East Lancs provides a comprehensive programme of training to build on existing skills and knowledge and develop new competencies.

Some elements of your adult training can count towards externally-recognised qualifications, and within the movement there are also awards to recognise dedication to training and outstanding service.

Frost Bite!We are delighted to announce a new exclusive badge, currently only available in East Lancashire! It’s available to those Scouts who are in East Lancashire and only those who have camped overnight in either snow and/or sub-zero temperatures.

The cost of the badge, which is sewn on underneath the relevant nights away badge to form a white border (in the same way that the instructor badges do) is 50p.

The requirements are as follows:

-Hold the relevant nights away badge-Have camped overnight either in snow and/or sub-zero temperatures on at

least one of the qualifying nights away. (Note: the use of indoor accommodation does not qualify)

-Verification of the above by a leader.

The badges are available to order from the County Office with the appropriate payment.

Samuel says...Scouting is all about new experiences; I think it's brilliant that something as adventurous as sub-zero camping gets recognised in its own special way.

Mandy says...The Sub Zero Activity Plus Badge is a recognition that the Scout has done something really COOL!

Those Scouts who are not yet old enough for the Jamboree selection or do not wish to go to Japan are still able to attend this weekend and potentially gain 5 communication based activity badges during the 48-hour non-stop weekend!

Throughout the entire weekend, there will also be a team of radio enthusiasts giving Scouts the opportunity to talk to fellow Scouts in other countries (this will be running throughout the night too!). That's not all! Also operating for the full 48 hours will be a bank of computers for Scouts to chat via the internet with

Scouters across the globe!

Throughout the weekend there will be ad-hoc activities happening like semaphore lessons, code breakers, signalling using torches, morse code and much, much more!

Should any Scout or Explorer find themselves some spare time during Saturday night, the Sports Barn will be the venue for a Silent Disco!

Planning for East Lancashire’s involvement continues at a pace, by the end of this month we hope to have selected our Unit leadership team following which we can focus on promoting the event to potential members of the Unit.

Specifically this will take the form of an information evening at Bowley on September 22nd and the participant selection weekend on 18th – 20th October.

I’m pleased to let you know that the event organisers are keen for the UK to send adult members to join the Jamboree Planning Team (JPT) as well as the International Service Team (IST).

The detail of the JPT roles still needs to be agreed but we can all start planning now to enable more adults from East Lancashire to take part in the Jamboree. Information on IST/JPT packages can be found here LINK

I am delighted to also announce that the fee for Unit members (young people and adults) for the 23rd World Scout Jamboree in Japan 2015 will be £2,995. This fee is inclusive of the following:

- Flights between the UK and Japan and transfers whilst in Japan.

- The Jamboree at Kirara-hama, Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan from the 28th July to the 8th August 2015.

- Mimasu Tokyo. This exciting aspect of the Jamboree package will include a short stay in Tokyo where participants will immerse themselves in the cultural aspects of the city. The fee will include all transportation costs, accommodation, activities and food.

- HoHo. We are thrilled to be able to offer the HoHo package as part of the Jamboree experience. Participants will stay at their host’s home and gain knowledge and understanding of how Japanese families live and socialise. The fee includes transportation costs, accommodation costs and food.

- Kit. Branded Jamboree uniform will be provided for the trip and can be kept by the individuals as mementos of their time in Japan.

JAMBOREE UPDATE…

£2,

Page 11: ELP July/August 2013

The budget has been devised to include the ‘essentials’ for the Jamboree experience. This means that from leaving the UK to arriving back in the UK you won’t need to spend any money on essentials such as food, travel and accommodation. Insurance is also included. Tents will be provided by the UK for Units, IST and JPT and are included in the fee. The Jamboree organisers will provide all other camping kit required at the Jamboree.

Bearing in mind the fee for this Jamboree is higher than in previous years we will endeavour to also keep additional local costs (e.g. training camps) to a

minimum, helping to reduce the financial implications to young people.

The UK Contingent leaders have pushed all the boundaries to gain approval for the budget and I trust that you will agree

that whilst the fees are inevitably higher than recent Jamborees they are still attractive for the package being

offered.

What about the International Service Team?

Details of how you can apply to be on the International Service Team or Japan Planning Team can be found in the IST welcome pack which is available to download from here LINK!

Selection will be run, unlike previous years, at a regional level and as the UK contingent cannot be anymore than 10% of the entire Jamboree, there will only be 300 IST places available for UK Scouts.

You must register your interest (see the details in the Welcome Pack by 23:59 on the 21st October, 2013! The applications

will open on the 16th September, 2013 at www.scouts.org.uk/wsj

Place  the  Postcard...

There are lots of things to shout about in Scouting, but more recently we've had some great results back from our census and we've made quite a bit of noise already, but we want even more!

We're running a competition to see how to place our Census Infographic in the most interesting place. That's all the criteria we have!

You can submit as many entries as you like, and we'll be announcing the winner on Friday 20th September. We cannot accept any entries after 16th September!

The winner will receive a free 'iScout in East Lancashire' polo shirt!

You can grab a copy of our census results from the County Office or alternatively, you can download it from the website at www.elscouts.org.uk/placethepostcard
