    A Bombay Toastmasters Club Presentation

    From Across The Globe...

    Fellow Toastmasters, Happy Anniversary!

October 22 is an auspicious date for Toastmasters around the world. Itmarks the day that a small group of people, led by Dr. Ralph C. Smedley,

held the first official Toastmasters meeting in the basement of a YMCA in

    Santa Ana, California, USA.

While the original intent of the group was to teach after-dinner speeches

to young men, as we all know, Toastmasters has evolved to become a

worldwide leader in communication and leadership development. This

evolution was no accident; Dr. Smedley firmly believed that the im-

provement of a person's ability to communicate his or her ideas was a

means of improving life in all its phases, personal as well as professional.

It's a philosophy that resonates as clearly today as it did back in 1924.

Since its founding, Toastmasters International has empowered more than

4 million people to achieve their full potential and realize their dreams.

Our organization's long-term success and growth is a tribute to Dr.

Smedley's vision. He understood that communication isn't optional and leadership isn't always natural, but

both can be learned through doing.

As we celebrate our 85th anniversary, the organization stands at a historic high point. Our membership is at

an all-time high of 252,000 and growing, our programs are more expansive and our leaders have devel-

oped innovative strategies to keep up with advances and shifting cultural dynamics of the global age.

The next 85 years hold even greater promise as we continue to adapt and evolve in an ever-changing world.

Let us work together to build our organization by building our members -- with confidence, leadership and

    service.

Thank you for all you do to support and serve Toastmasters.

    Sincerely,

    Gary Schmidt

    Toastmasters International President2009-2010

It is often said that the effectiveness of Toastmasters is demonstrated outside of Toastmasters. While I

could often sense the benefit of Toastmasters in my career as a trainer, there was one incident that

stands out. Recently, I was in Sri Lanka and made a presentation about India in a conference that

had an audience of over 800 people. Due to time constraints, I must have spoken for not more

than a couple of minutes. The surprising thing was that for months after that presentation, I have

people from Sri Lanka contacting me and complimenting me on that little presentation, saying

they loved the way I spoke. Funnily, I do not know those people and they have actually made an

effort to find my contact details and get in touch. One of them asked me to even be his coach for

public speaking! I owe this to Toastmasters!

    A Bombay Toastmasters Club Presentation

    From Across The Country...

Dear members of Bombay toastmasters club,

Greetings from Bangalore! I am told that BTM is so active that it iscreating ripples which are felt all across Division D! I hope I do get an

opportunity to visit your club soon.

Toastmaster clubs all over the world generally follow the same pattern.

At the same time each club is different. Each has its own unique culture.

This culture is a natural offshoot of the clubs founders. The sponsors of

BTM, Jayesh and Vijaya and the founder president Arun Vishwanath

have left their imprint of excellence on the club. This pursuit of brilliance

was ably followed by Nazir Usman and now by Brillian.

Talking about leadership let me share my thoughts with you. I believe

that leadership starts from within. All of us possess the seeds of greatness.

In this respect we are no different from Barrack Obama or Dr.Abdul

Kalam. While those seeds have blossomed into magnificence in them, we

are blissfully ignorant about their very existence in us.

Once we become aware of those seeds within us, the next step is to nurture them. We do that by devel-

oping our leadership skills. The degree to which we do so determines our success. The biggest block to

our progress is fear. Most of us are afraid to stand out; to say what we feel; to risk failure; to appear

foolish; to be criticized. This fear stops us from becoming what we could be.

This is where the toastmasters program is of immense help to us. The encouraging and supportive environ-

ment of our home club dispels our fears; our fellow toastmasters act as cheerleaders when we bravely

stretch ourselves out of our comfort zones. They celebrate when we win and lift us when we fall. Step by

step, they help us to discover the greatness within us.

I urge every member of BTM to make the most of your membership. The program works! The results are

directly proportional to the degree of your involvement. Try it and let me know. I would love to hear

    your success stories!

Wishing all of you happy times ahead

    And From The Boss

    Time, surely flies!

Three months into the year and it just seems like yesterday that I took charge asthe President of BTM. We began with the end in mind, and it has given us a good

head start in many of our endeavours. As we move into the new quarter, let us

renew our pledge to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning envi-

    ronment for every member.

October is a very special month for Toastmasters across the world; it was on the

22ndday in 1924, a group of men assembled by Dr Ralph C. Smedley met in the

basement of the YMCA in Santa Ana, California, USA, forming a club to afford

practice and training in the art of public speaking and in presiding over meetings,

and to promote sociability and good fellowship among its members. It is a

reminder to all of us that all big things begin small. No journey is enjoyable if there are no ups and downs. We have been constantlyfacing a challenge with our venue. Some of our dear colleagues parted ways; some new faces have joined us.

As Don Williams Jr. said The road of life twists and turns and no two directions are ever the same.Yet our lessons come from the journey, not the destination., I am sure that we would surf through therough tides and sail smoothly as we steer the ship together towards safe shores.

CommunicateToastmasters International is undergoing change. We now have the Toastmasters Learning Connection to help

us become communicators and leaders. We have to leverage technology and make the most of it, social

network groups like LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, the toastmasters community is going places. Yes, we at

BTM need to take on these areas, currently which are untapped. I am sure that we could work wonders.

One area that we need to improve on is our participation in Area, Division and District meets. This not only

provides us with a scope to improve and network, but it also provides us with valuable insights and learning.

I urge every member to grab opportunities to speak, take up roles at Area, Division meets. Believe me it is

only passion that makes the big difference and it can be clearly seen in discussion boards and forums.

EducateThe BTM Advisory Team (BAT) has been instrumental in ensuring that we move ahead with pride and

achieve our goals. Be it the new format meeting, informative sessions including T with Suneel, How to be

a Club Mentor, Achieving TMI Educational Goals, Being a Distinguished Club, etc., we have been

providing value addition at each step. TM Rukmini Iyer, CC, CL and TM Suneel Agarwal made us proud by

being our representatives at the Area Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest. VPE, TM Arvind Nair CC,

CL has ambitious plans for the subsequent meetings and with your help and support we would not only

enhance our meeting quality but also create benchmarks for the world to follow.

CelebrateFirst things first, I must confess, the speech quality and level of speakers have increased and they have raised

the bar each time. TM Rukmini Iyer, CC, CL won the runners-up position at the Division Evaluation contest.

The Club achieved 5 goal credits towards DCP and is today a Distinguished Club. Thanks to the efforts of

VPM TM Madhura Nene, we added 10 new members and achieved the membership campaign award -Smedley Award for adding more than 5 members during August & September. Commendable achievements

at BTM include the wonderful ice breaker speeches during the speech marathon.

On a personal front, I feel elated to have successfully completed my CC track. It was a double delight for me

to have our District Governor, Deepak Menon, DTM, evaluate my CC speech.

Without you, there is no me, without you, there is no we, without U we cannot spell sUccess, let Us joinhands to communicate, educate and celebrate the movement called Toastmasters!

    Introducing someone? Remember W-E-B!

    Source: http://decker.com/blog/2006/12/giving-good-introductions

WEB:Its all you need to remember when you are asked to introduce a speaker. Go heavy on the Warmth,

moderate on the Expertise, tight on Brevity. Your job is to build enthusiasm and anticipations.

    W for Warmth:

If you feel good about the speaker, the audience will. What is interesting about him/her? What is incred-

ible, amusing, surprising or inspiring about her accomplishments? If youve never met him, what did he

say in a telephone call you might make? Your experience of the speaker, warmly expressed, is vital to

building the energy of friendly anticipation in the audience.

    E for Expertise:

Enough to qualify the speaker to speak on his topic. Dont rehash her whole resume or overstate heraccomplishments this is where most introductions fall flat. Weave her expertise into the topic of the

speech, so the audience is primed to listen with interest.

    B for Brevity:

From 30 seconds to 2 minutes, tops. This means youll have to begin highly energized, rehearse for time,

and err on the side of short vs. long.

    More Tips:

Use the speakers name at least twice, fully pronouncing clearly.

Learn to pronounce his name and title properly before the introduction

Always interview him/her ahead of time so your connection is personalized.

If the speaker is too important to be personally interviewed, ask others who know him/her for

interesting sidelights that make him come alive.

Smile, really smile broadly, when you ask the audience to welcome .! You yourself then warmly

welcome the speaker to the lectern or spotlight area never desert the space before she gets there.

Dont overshadow the speaker - remember your job is to introduce the speaker, not to steal the show

Dont reveal too much about the presentation - else, the speaker would be uncomfortable

Research on the speaker and his topic of presentation in advance

    Facts must be correct

I was assigned the role of Grammarian at the Area Meet organized by

Mumbai Toastmasters Club. We were travelling from Thane to Bandra for

the meeting when mid way we had a flat tyre and reached the venue

late. Was this a bad omen? No way, the over 100 strong Toastmasters and

Guests were amazed when I presented my report. This got me recogni-

tion in the Area. Since then it has been work and more work, furthering

Toastmasters and improving the quality of members.

Completing your CC a practical guide to getting it done...

    courtesty: http://www.toastmasters.org/

For many new Toastmasters, the first compelling goal of the educational program is the Competent Commu-

nicator award. It's clearly defined in the Competent Communication manual that's included in the New

Member Kit, and it's a requirement for most of the advanced awards that Toastmasters offers. But what's the

best way to earn your CC? How can you harness your initial enthusiasm and complete those ten speech

projects with a minimum of hassle and procrastination?

Schedule ItOne very important step is to give yourself a set of deadlines-one for the completion of the entire manual,

and one for each of the 10 projects. Without deadlines, tasks of this scope usually move to the bottom of the

priority list, where they have a tendency to stay for a long time.

Strict deadlines aren't for everyone. As Douglas Adams, author of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series,

puts it: "I love deadlines. I like the whooshing noise they make as they fly by." But the important lesson here

is to decide how much time you want to give yourself to complete the manual, and monitor your progressas you go.

    Break it Down

Feel like you're too busy to work on your speech projects? It may help to think of each project as a series of

small, discrete tasks, and devote whatever time you have to completing those tasks whenever you can. You

don't have to complete all of the preparation for a speech in one sitting; often, five or ten minutes are

enough to make significant progress on an upcoming speech.

" Taking a break at work? Jot down a few ideas and then send them to your home e-mail address.

" Practice your speech in the car on the way to work.

" As soon as you finish a speech, immediately begin writing down ideas for the next one.

Ask for HelpAsk your mentor for advice. Seek out other club members who have completed several Toastmasters awards,

and find out how they got the job done. Also, the club's vice president education will be particularly

interested in helping you complete your educational goals. Other club officers also have a stake in your

success, so be sure to ask them for help if you need it, too.

Have Fun!Membership in Toastmasters reaps many rewards, not the least of which is the pure enjoyment of sharing

your ideas, making connections and improving your speaking skills. So remember to have a good time

planning and delivering your speeches, and before you know it you'll have that CC award you've been

dreaming about, and be well on your way to the next goal.

    TM Parul

For me, Toastmasters has been a life changing experience not only because I improved my commu-

nication skills but also the leadership skills. In corporate world, a supervisor has people reporting

to him officially. Performance appraisals are done by the supervisor and therefore most of the

employees choose to maintain cordial relations with their managers. But in Toastmasters, your title

or your position is of little consequence. You work towards the benefit of self, club, Area or

Division without anyone formally reporting to you. Therefore, it is completely about Leading

without a Title. The only way to achieve results is by motivating people and explaining to them

how they would benefit in the process.no stick involved at all. J

Arent leading and motivating people amazing skills to learn, both as an individual or as a profes-

sional? Lets raise a Toast to that! Cheers!
