What is the Committee of School Councils (COSC)?

A group of parent representatives from School Councils across Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS).

COSC meets once a month, usually in the boardroom at Central Office.

Meetings provide an opportunity for School Council representatives to come together to hear about projects and initiatives happening at the division level.

Meetings are also a forum for sharing ideas and providing input on specific initiatives to EIPS’ Board of Trustees and senior administration.

How do we prepare the agenda?

COSC members brainstorm ideas for the year at the first meeting.

COSC members may submit ideas throughout the year to the Chair/Communications.

Communications works with the Chair to prepare each meeting’s agenda.

Each month, draft agendas are circulated to our Board Chair and Superintendent to review and make additions.

COSC Chair approves the final agenda.

Agenda is distributed to members and posted on our division website usually a few days before the meeting.

What do you want to see on the agenda in 2014/2015?

TOP 5 Topics from last year:

At the last 2014–2015 COSC meeting, we asked the group to vote on a series of topics to discuss this year. From that list of topics the following five members told us they most wanted to discuss this year.• Positive Mental Health: Implementing programs to prevent problems later on •Restorative Justice: Is a collective approach better?• School Council Engagement: Rethinking parent involvement and innovative ideas to engage better •Online Education: What is it and how does it work at EIPS•Digital World: Insight into the devices, apps, and websites our kids are now exposed to

We can look at these topics but if we are going to explore them we need to understand what you want to get out of these topics and at what month is best to discuss each topic.
