Research Summary

Early program of research focused on developing a better understanding of cross-cultural dynamics present in therapy and advancing clinical models that more adequately fit the cultural characteristics of Latino/a populations. This work has evolved into investigations of preventive and clinical interventions that demonstrate effectiveness with at-risk and trauma affected populations. Wieling was the recipient of a K01 Research Scientist Career Development Award funded by NIMH called “Implementing the Parenting Through Change Model with Latina Single Mothers” (2003-2008). The purpose of this study was to adapt and extend upon the Oregon Social Learning Center’s Parent Management Training (PMT-O) intervention for a population of Latina single mothers. Current research agenda involves integrating previous cross-cultural work and prevention background to develop ecological and culturally relevant multi-component interventions for populations affected by traumatic stress – particularly related to war and organized violence. This research is being conducted with immigrant and refugee populations in the United States and in several international contexts including Mexico, Uganda, Sri Lanka, and Brazil. Wieling is a vivo member (vivo.org) and conducts yearly trainings in Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) for clinicians working with populations experiencing posttraumatic stress symptoms.

- Co-taught two courses with Dr. Catherine Solheim (seminar on Family Dynamics in Child Maltreatment Contexts in Mexico, in 2006, and Global Perspectives on Immigrant and Refugee Families in 2012/13); co-facilitated informal discussion groups (Multicultural Conversations) and ongoing discussion groups related to immigrant and refugee families.

- Co-taught Qualitative Family Research Methods with Dr. Tai Mendenhall – Wieling was lead instructor; co-facilitate ongoing trauma discussion groups in FSoS and co-facilitate Psychological First Aid trainings with Medical Reserve Corps.

- Co-facilitated Trauma Reading Group with Dr. Rosa Garcia Peltoniemi from the Center for Victims of Torture from 2008-2011.

- Taught a doctoral level course at the Universidad Pontifica the Sao Paulo, Brazil, August 2005, titled "Intervening with Children and Families in the Contexts of Child/Adolescent Delinquency and Trauma."
