Jean Sibelius Finnish composer Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) got his name recorded in the universal history of music for his contribution to the development of the symphony and symphonic poem, where, in the latter category, we have the epic Finland - a vigorous composition that mirrors the peoples fight for sovereignty.Sibelius wished and managed to give this music an important role in shaping the identity of his country. The theme Finland, composed in 1899 for a play of protest against the oppression practiced in the Grand Duchy by the Russian Empire, remains a patriotic symbol.At the end of this century, the Finns aspired to become an independent nation-state, which happened only in 1917. Young Sibelius grew amongst the ideals of romantic nationalism, which would later influence his art, full of historical references.He abandoned Law school to attend the Helsinki Music School, still far from imagining that it would one day be called Sibelius Academy. Influenced by the 19th century rules of composition, he was a Wagner enthusiast.Over time, he distanced himself from opera and concentrated on symphonic composition. He wrote seven symphonies and several poems set to music. Sibelius had the particularity of associating musical notes with colours. He was mainly inspired by nature and literature.Preferring to write in a tonal language, which earned him much criticism at the time, his severe orchestration is now considered a hallmark of Finnish traits.

Elisabeth Schwarzkopf Elisabeth Schwarzkopf (1915-2006) was a German opera singer who stood out in the most prestigious opera houses in the world, consecrated by her faultless vocal technique, combined with an exceptional tone of voice and an unusual interpretive talent.In addition to possessing rare singing skills, she was also noted for her beauty, intelligence, extreme perfectionism and an immense capacity for work. She is unanimously acclaimed and considered a diva.Debuting on stage in 1938, Schwarzkopf began to shine as a skilled interpreter of lieder, a German musical genre. Shortly after, she got hired as first soprano of the Vienna State Opera the beginning of a glorious career.She is famous for her interpretations of important lyrical characters, such as Mimi in La Boheme, Pamina in the Magic Flute, Violetta in La Traviata, and Madame Butterffly. Her choice of composers includes Mozart, Schubert and Strauss.In Portugal, Schwarzkopf performed several times. In 1954 she gave recitals in Coimbra, Braga and Lisbon, at Teatro Nacional de So Carlos (So Carlos National Theatre), the house she returned to in 1955, for two concerts, and in 1958, always at the invitation of the Crculo de Cultura Musical (Circle of Musical Culture). She returned to Portuguese lands again in 1967 and 1968, hired by the Sociedade de Concertos de Lisboa (Lisbon Concert Society) to sing at Tivoli.The last Portuguese stage to have welcomed her was again the So Carlos, in 1974. After attending one of her concerts, critic Joo Paes, having immediately become a fan, dedicated to her a flattering article extolling her art, evocatively described as analytical, to the edge of possibility.

O compositor finlands Jean Sibelius (1865--1957) inscreveu o seu nome na histria universal da msica pelo seu contributo para o desenvolvimento da sinfonia e do poema sinfnico, destacando-se nesta ltima categoria o pico Finlndia, vigorosa composio que espelha a luta de um povo pela soberania.Sibelius desejou e conseguiu que a msica tivesse um papel importante na formao da identidade do seu pas. O tema Finlndia, composto em 1899 para uma pea teatral de protesto contra a opresso exercida no Grande Ducado pelo Imprio Russo, perma-nece como smbolo patritico.Naquele final de sculo, os finlandeses aspira-vam a tornar-se um estado-nao independente, o que s viria a acontecer em 1917. O jovem Sibelius cresceu entre os ideais do nacionalismo romntico, que influenciariam a sua arte, povoada de referncias histricas.

Abandonou um curso de Direito para frequentar a Escola de Msica de Helsnquia, ainda longe de imaginar que a mesma iria um dia designar-se Academia Sibelius. Influenciado pelas normas de composio do sculo XIX, apreciava Wagner.Com o tempo afastou-se da pera e concen-trou-se na composio sinfnica. Escreveu sete sinfonias e diversos poemas musicados. Sibelius tinha a particularidade de associar as notas musicais s cores. Inspirava-se sobretudo na natureza e na literatura.Privilegiando a escrita num idioma tonal, o que poca lhe valeu algumas crticas, a sua orquestrao severa hoje considerada uma marca da caracterstica finlandesa.

Elisabeth Schwarzkopf (1915-2006) foi uma cantora lrica alem que se destacou nos mais prestigiados teatros de pera do mundo, consagrada pela sua irrepreensvel tcnica vocal, qual aliava um timbre excecional e um invulgar talento interpretativo.Alm de possuir raros dotes vocais, fez-se notar pela beleza, inteligncia, extremo perfecionismo e uma imensa capacidade de trabalho. Unani-memente aclamada, considerada uma diva.Estreando-se nos palcos em 1938, Schwarzkopf comeou por brilhar como exmia intrprete de lieder, gnero musical alemo. Pouco tempo depois contratada como primeiro soprano da pera de Viena - princpio de uma gloriosa carreira.Celebrizaram-se as suas interpretaes de importantes personagens lricas, entre elas Mimi, em La Boheme, Pamina, em A Flauta Mgica, Violetta, em La Traviata, e Madame

Butterffly. Dos seus compositores de eleio sobressaem Mozart, Schubert e Strauss.Em Portugal, Schwarzkopf atuou vrias vezes. Em 1954 deu recitais em Coimbra, Braga e em Lisboa, no Teatro Nacional de So Carlos, casa qual regressou em 1955, para dois concertos, e em 1958, sempre a convite do Crculo de Cultura Musical. Voltou a terras lusas em 1967 e 1968, contratada pela Sociedade de Concertos de Lisboa para cantar no Tivoli.O ltimo palco portugus que a recebeu foi de novo o So Carlos, em 1974. Aps assistir a um dos seus concertos, o crtico Joo Paes, rendido, dedicou-lhe um elogioso artigo exaltando a sua arte, sugestivamente descrita como analtica, at ao extremo do possvel.
