What’s happening in 5/6G?

Jelly egg experiment

In Science, we are learning about the properties of solids, liquids and gases. To start our unit, we

conducted an experiment to attempt to remove the hard shell of an egg. Success! The acid in

the vinegar broke down the hard shell and left only the soft, transparent membrane of the egg! It

took our class 36 hours to get a result!

#GOALS

In 5/6G this term, we are focusing on our personal goals. Students are working hard towards

achieving their learning goals with Miss Willoughby. We have created a #GOALS wall within our

classroom so that we can see our goals and track our progress!

Treat all equipment with respect

Move about the room quietly

Hands up and wait

Listen actively

Use your manners

Work quietly and allow others to do their work

What an exciting time we have had rehearsing for our school concert!!

There are Hawaiians, pirates, surfers, Tina turner and Her Rock Birds and many

more delightful and famous characters

During the first week of the recent school holidays, 9 boys from our school, Eli L, Charlie G, Preston R, Caleb S,

Zachary H, Henry H, Samuel J, Joshua S and Jackson R, were chosen to represent Northern NSW in a number of

teams to play at The Schools Nationals held in Brisbane. The boys played teams from many of the other states,

such as Western Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and Queensland.

All the boys played their best and represented us with pride. Whilst some of our boys didn't make it to the finals

unfortunately, special mention must go to both Preston, Caleb and Charlie whose teams all made the semi-finals;

and a huge congratulations goes out to Eli whose team won the grand final and is now able to call himself a

National Champion. Well done to all the boys.

Our preschool playground upgrades are in full swing and it is

looking fabulous. Students are enjoying exploring the new areas

and the opportunity to be creative in the mud kitchen, trickling

water down the rock bed creek and using their new

environments. More upgrades are coming, in particular the

playground equipment and shade sails for the sandpit.

Today our school community participated in the Fearless Challenge. Representing #Teamophie, students came

to school out of uniform and were set the task of riding 150 kilometres as a team to complete the challenge. By

midday we had smashed this goal and set ourselves another challenge to get to 150 kilometres on each bike for

the day. This is a part of raising awareness for Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.

The day’s focus is on fun and fitness with the added benefit of

raising funds for our school.

Students have now received their Sponsorship Forms with

instructions on how to raise money and order prizes. Students

can obtain donations in cash using the Sponsorship Form together with online fundraising, which is an easy way to help

your child raise money and to reach their fundraising goal sooner. You can create a Student Profile Page at

www.myprofilepage.com.au.

Students who raise as little as $10 or more will receive an incentive prize for their efforts. But you have the option to choose

up to five (5) prizes and this will set your fundraising goal. Family and friends are your greatest supporters, so ask them first

for your support. You will reach your fundraising goal in no time.

National Recycling Week, 11th - 15th November.

Over the past few years, the need for awareness of sustainable living practices has increased

significantly around the world – and recycling has become more crucial than ever with our fast-growing

population. In fact, a nationwide review revealed that waste has increased around 170% since 1996,

which is why becoming more environmentally responsible has never been more urgent.

This term, we will be bringing recycling to the forefront in Outside School Hours Care by celebrating

National Recycling Week from 11th to 15th November. It is going to be a fun-filled week as we teach

children all about sustainability and how they can contribute to the world for future generations!

Our aim is to develop their knowledge and creativity on recycling through fun-learning activities. Some

of these include using used bottles or cartons for planting, making newspaper hats, an exciting recycled

fashion parade, and heaps more! Talk to the Educators at your service to find out what they have lined

up for National Recycling Week.

Not yet Registered? Don’t worry, it’s never too late. Plus, it’s FREE to register.

Before attending our care, you must register your child pp.campaustralia.com.au/account/login. Also

Free home-based assessment and treatment for 7 to 12 year old children with fear and anxiety disorders.

GU Ref No: 2019/146

Does your child become very afraid of certain situations or objects, worry about a lot of things, get very distressed, or try to avoid things they fear?

About the studyOur team at Griffith University may be able to assist you. We are conducting a nationwide study that includes the following services at no cost to families:

• A thorough assessment of your child’s anxiety with a trained psychologist via the telephone;

• Your child receiving one of two kinds of home-based treatments delivered on a PC, laptop or tablet; and

• Two follow-up telephone assessments with a trained psychologist 6- and 12-months after treatment to track your child’s progress.

The study aims to find out if these two treatments are as effective as each other, and which children have the best response to each kind of treatment. This will mean that there are more evidence-based treatments available for helping anxious children.

About the treatmentsEach treatment involves your child completing treatment sessions at home on a PC, laptop or tablet.

Each treatment involves your child learning practical strategies to better manage anxiety.

• One treatment helps children learn to control the focus of their attention on helpful things around them.

• The other treatment helps children learn to think differently and approach things they fear.

Each treatment includes information, telephone or email support for parents in assisting their child to better manage anxiety.

Prior studies have shown that children who complete each treatment experience significant reductions in anxiety.

Contact usThis study is being funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council and is led by Professor Allison Waters and a team of experts in childhood anxiety disorders.
