They develop an understanding of color, line, shape, texture, pattern, and balance. Students are led to appreciate the art around them and brought to understand how it can enrich their lives. A very important part of elementary art is teaching children to use their eyes…to learn to “see”, not just to “look”. Students are encouraged to appreciate art done by each other as well as famous works of art. Students are exposed to a variety of art media, with hands‐on approach. Every student is considered an individual and encouraged to do their very best at whatever ability level they are. Every student is made to feel that his or her contribution or creation has artistic value. Everyone can and does succeed in a successful elementary art program. Student Learning Outcomes/Objectives The student will:
1. Discover ideas for art in personal experiences. 2. Transform ideas to create art. 3. Work with media to make art. 4. Perceive and describe works of art. 5. Interpret works of art. 6. Judge works of art. 7. Know how artists discover ideas for art in personal experience.
Required Materials Kindergarten = Smock Grades 1 – 4 = Smock, supply box/bog, watercolor paints Assignments All work completed in class.
Grading Policy Grades available to be given in art are S+, S, S-, and U. All students start each quarter with a S+. This will be the grade they will receive on their report card as long as they following these rules:
1. I will raise my hand to speak and wait to be called upon. 2. I will work without disturbing others. 3. I will listen and follow directions. 4. I will bring necessary supplies to art class.
Students’ grades are not determined by their skill level or innate creativity. At the elementary level there are many degrees of physiological maturity and this will not be held against a student in art. Talent is not graded, as talent is a gift and at this age all are encouraged to develop their talent.
