What Is Electro-Magnetic Impact Welding ?

Electromagnetic pulse welding is a new and innovative joining process.

It use of electromagnetic forces for deformation and joining of workpieces.

Solid State and Lap welding .

High amplitude current require.

Research Works

It was found that the most

intensive induced current density

region is at the edge of the

welded zone.

It is also seen that the interface

temperature increased rapidly

around 5o /µs .

Advantages

Joining of conventionally non-weldable materials.

High production rate possible.

Contact-free: no marks of forming tools and processing

of coated or sensitive materials is possible.

MIW is green process. There is no heat, no radiation, no

gas, no smoke and sparks therefore the emissions are

negligible.

MIW is very suitable for working environment condition

due to a low noise level.

Limitations

Lap joints are required, since one sheet material must

impact the other part to create a weld.

One of the sheet materials needs to be a good electrical

conductor, otherwise a conductive so-called ‘driver’

material should be used to increase the impact velocity.

One workpiece has to withstand the impact of the other,

so it is possible that a mandrel or support is required to

prevent deformation.
