Electricity & Magnetism
You have been hired as a short term supply teacher at Hightower Trail Middle School. You will need to prepare yourself to teach and
demonstrate one of the following topics to my students. You will not know the topic until after you have prepared for all of the
topics.
Timeline: Learning & Preparation (Monday-Wednesday), Teaching (Thursday –Friday)
Evaluation: A quiz will be given to your students, and you will be evaluated according to their quiz grades.
You are to prepare to teach the following topics.
1. Static Electricity: STANDARDS: SPS10. Students will investigate the properties of electricity and magnetism. a. Investigate static electricity in terms of friction, induction, and conduction. 2. Conductors & Insulators Identify and differentiate between insulators and conductors of electricity 3. Electron Flow: SPS10. Students will investigate the properties of electricity and magnetism. b. Explain the flow of electrons in terms of alternating and direct current 4. Circuits: SPS10. Students will investigate the properties of electricity and magnetism. S8P5. Students will recognize characteristics of electricity, and magnetism as major kinds of forces acting in nature. b. Demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages of series and parallel circuits and how they transfer energy. 5. Relationship between Electricity & Magnetism SPS10. Students will investigate the properties of electricity and magnetism. c. Investigate applications of magnetism and/or its relationship to the movement of electrical charge S8P2. c. Investigate and explain that electric currents and magnets can exert force on each other.
S8P5. Students will recognize characteristics of gravity, electricity, and magnetism as major kinds of forces acting in nature.
Resources: (You are required to use all in your learning & preparation process.) 1. Textbook 2. PHET simulations http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulations/category/physics/electricity-magnets-and-circuits 3. Lab Supplies (you will have access to lab supplies in the room) 4. Web sites (Check with your teacher if you use other sites to ensure they are valid.)
Sites listed on page 2 for the individual stations.
Introduction to charges, conductors, electric fields, magnetic fields, current, resistance, Faraday and Coulomb’s Laws, magnets, DC and AC power. http://www.physics4kids.com/files/elec_intro.html
Khan Academy https://www.khanacademy.org/science/physics/electricity-and-magnetism
YouTube: Bozeman Science o Series and parallel circuits o Voltage, current and resistance o Electricity and electric circuits
Magnetism Your lesson criteria:
Satisfies all components of the standard
Includes either a physical or digital demonstration or hands on activity
Not to exceed 15 minutes
STATION 1 Static Electricity Use the materials provided to cause the balloon to stick to the wall. Use the appropriate PHET simulations to further investigate static electricity https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/balloons https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/travoltage
STATION 2 Insulator or Conductor of Electricity Use the materials provided to determine which materials are insulators or conductors Test the following materials to see if when connected to the battery can cause the light to light up Utilize the website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks2/science/physical_processes/circuits_conductors/play/ http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/8_9/circuits_conductors.shtml http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/gamesactivities/circuitsconductors.html
STATION 3 ELECTRON FLOW (AC & DC) Use the PHET simulations https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/circuit-construction-kit-ac https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/circuit-construction-kit-ac-virtual-lab
STATION 4 CIRCUITS (SERIES & PARALLEL) Use the materials at the station to build and test series and parallel circuits. Make sure you determine the advantages and disadvantages of each. Use the Phet simulations https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/circuit-construction-kit-dc-virtual-lab
