CLS Vision (Approved by he Board)• To be a global leader and a recognized centre of

CID Vision (2004)• Design, build and maintain control, data acquisition

and instrumentation systems that help position CLS as a world leading synchrotron. Achieve our goal by both collaboration and providing leadership both within CLS and externally in the synchrotron and accelerator instrumentation/controls community.

CLS Mission

To develop and operate the Canadian Light Source facility to enable the user community to conduct world-leading synchrotron-based research and development.

• Synchrotron Expertise: We work with the Canadian and international scientific communities to enhance expertise in synchrotron science and promote the utilization of synchrotron light.

• CLS Research and Development: We conduct competitive research and development to keep the Canadian Light Source at the forefront of synchrotron science.

• Industrial Competitiveness: We promote industrial involvement and partnerships that support commercialization opportunities and economic development.

• Innovation: We provide a collaborative multidisciplinary environment that fosters innovation.

• Outreach: We participate actively in educational, social and cultural development of our communities.

CID Alignment with the CLS Mission and Department Priorities (Last update 04/03/2010)

• Ensure work is done in a safe way and we meet our professional and regulatory obligations.• Ensure when we have scheduled beam, the machine works within performance parameters.• Ensure that scheduled users making use of commissioned techniques, i.e., can do their

experiments.• Ensure that scheduled users making use of special beam (single bunch, time resolve, CSR

etc.) i.e., can do their experiments. • Ensure we protect the CLS/UofS assets by doing critical preventative maintenance,

acceptance testing, etc.• Ensure that scheduled machine studies can occur.• Major Facility Projects (Phase II, III, etc.).• Contribute to Meeting the CLS mission/vision statement:

– Synchrotron Expertise - Participate in internal, external and international projects that build our expertise in Controls & Instrumentation. Publish and share the results of our work within the community.

– Undertake CID Internal Projects that maintain the CLS as a competitive state-of-the-art facility.

– Partner with Canadian Industry - Support interdisciplinary collaboration within CLS and our government collaborators including: CANARIE, PRECARN, Mitacs, NRC etc.

– Outreach - Collaborate with Canadian Universities creating opportunities for Canadian students

– International Co-operation - Partner in inter-laboratory collaboration in the Controls and Instrumentation Area to our mutual benefit

Improving the Beam

• Storage ring dipolestability improved(30ppm -> 15 ppm)

• Power supply upgrades oninjection chain - nearly complete

• Upgraded orbit correction software in place and ready for commissioning

• Absolute power meter 1 % Accuracy and 50 nW Resolution (comp. with PTB)

Front End Electronics

• Contract in place for thefirst µTCA system

• Continuous scanning nowon VESPERS and SGM

• Evaluation underway on RTEMS and motion control platform migration

• Evaluation of pre-amps (2011/12)

User Oriented Software

• Continue to achieve highuser satisfaction rates

• We are moving forward on HXMA improvements

• Human factors review are ongoing• Many of the concepts embedded in

aquaman are based on the last years user meeting

Aquaman The Story

• Superhero Mission: Transforming beamline software away from "Controlling Machines" to "Supporting Experiments“

• Spawned By: A creative design session of synchrotron users, beamline staff, and software developers in Summer 2010

• Seeks to Protect: The whole experimental process:  From planning and organizing old data, to running experiments on beamlines, to visualization, analysis, and making connections

• Sidekick: "Dataman", a take-home version that lets scientists compare, process, visualize, and export their data, using the same interface they see on the beamline

• Super Powers: Adapts to new beamlines and techniques in the blink of an eye.   Can run on almost any platform (Linux, Mac, Windows).   

• Secret Abilities: Agile development; fast and frequent user feedback; modular design; integrated documentation.

• Arch-Nemeses:  8AM mornings. TestBoy (his test suite).  Being confused with Aquaman, the lamest comic book character ever.
