The elastic stability of circular cylindrical shells subject toeither axial compression or pure bending is investigated for thecase of cylinders strengthen ed by internal pressure. Nonlinearfinite deflection theory is employed an d an ap proxim ate solutionof the equilibrium and compatibility equations is obtained bym e of Gslerkin ’s metho d. Comparatively simple expressions arepresented for the various buckling stresses and these expressionsare evaluated to yield buckling stresses 89 a func tion of t he in-terna l pressure. The critical stress fo r bending is found to begreater han that in axial compression, and in approximately the
rat io indicated by recent experimental evidence.
