Page 2: EL SALVADOR - secure.holbrooktravel.com AED UF El Salvad… · Overnight at Puerto Barillas. (BLD) MAY 10 - SUCHITOTO This morning visit the archaeological site of Joya de Cerén

MAY 6 - SAN SALVADOR Upon arrival into El Salvador International Airport, meet your guide and transfer to the hotel. After checking in, enjoy a late dinner on your own and receive an orientation and introduction to the health system of El Salvador. *Depending on arrival time, visit several hospitals in San Salvador accompanied by a local nonprofit health organization. Overnight at Hotel Villa Terra.

MAY 7 - INTIPUCÁ This morning travel south to the municipality of Intipucá. Upon arrival, head to the public health clinic to assist the staff. This clinic assists around 50 - 100 people each day. Students will be able to help the staff take vitals (temperatures, blood pressure and pulse rates) or assist as needed. At the end of the day, check into your hotel located in front of the pristine El Icacal beach. Overnight at Rancho El Icacal. (BLD)

MAY 8 - INTIPUCÁReturn to the clinic today to continue working with the patients. Overnight at Rancho El Icacal. (BLD)

MAY 9 - BAHÍA DE JIQUILISCOToday head west toward Jiquilisco Bay, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the country’s largest and most important wetland, as well as the largest mangrove estuarine system in Northern Mesoamerica. Jiquilisco Bay contains mangrove forests, estuaries, sand bars, beaches, 27 islands of varying size, freshwater lagoons and seasonally flooded forests. Its 637 square kilometers represent a transit point for at least 87 species of migratory birds. While here, learn about the cacao plant with a trip to a plantation, and visit a monkey community, where the monkeys respond when called and scale down the trees to interact with visitors. Afterwards, embark on a boat tour through Jiquilisco Bay to learn about the hawksbill sea turtle. Hawksbill turtles have helped keep our oceans healthy for millions of years, but today as a result of poaching, fishing, and environmental pollution they are near extinction. Join local biologists to learn about their research on the hawksbill sea turtle and efforts being made to promote their conservation. Overnight at Puerto Barillas. (BLD)

MAY 10 - SUCHITOTOThis morning visit the archaeological site of Joya de Cerén accompanied by a local archaeologist. In 1993, Joya de Cerén was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This agricultural community was buried by the ashes of Volcano Caldera back in 600 AD. Thanks to excellent preservation, this site provides glimpses into the everyday lives of the Mesoamerican agricultures of this time period—their homes, beds, crop fields, and even saunas. After enjoying a local lunch, participate in an indigo workshop at Los Nacimientos farm, one of two farms in the world with the highest quality certification of organic indigo. Indigo is a natural colorant extracted from the Xiquilite plant and in the 17th century a single ounce of indigo was as valuable as gold. El Salvador indigo is recognized as top quality worldwide. Learn about the process of indigo extraction as well as artistic techniques used on clothing; you’ll also have the opportunity to design your own scarf. Afterward, continue on to Suchitoto, one of El Salvador’s oldest colonial towns, characterized by cobblestone streets, old colonial homes, and Santa Lucia Church, constructed in 1853. Overnight at Hotel El Tejado. (BL)

MAY 11 - SAN SALVADORToday we visit Volcanoes National Park, where three amazing volcanoes (Izalco Volcano, Santa Ana Volcano and Cerro Verde) embrace beautiful Coatepeque Lake, which fills a crater of another volcano. Izalco Volcano is one of the youngest volcanoes in the Americas, while Santa Ana Volcano is thousands of years old. Izalco Volcano was known as the “Lighthouse of the Pacific” since its lava guided the ships on the Pacific Ocean Coast. No lava is currently flowing, but both volcanoes are still active since constant fumaroles are present. We will hike to the edge of the crater of Santa Ana Volcano, at 2,300 meters above sea level, and see the sulfur lagoon within the crater along with its fumaroles. The view is also spectacular. For lunch, enjoy a traditional Salvadoran world-famous dish: pupusas. Return to San Salvador this afternoon. Overnight at Hotel Villa Terra. (BL)

MAY 12 - DEPARTTransfer to the airport for your flight home. (B)

ABOUT CLIMB FOR CANCERCo-founded by Ron and Dianne Farb in 2003, our small Foundation has made a tangible impact on the lives of many people fighting the disease. The Foundation has funded or created several psycho-social programs which provide support to the patient and the family, funded research grants, and given kids an opportunity to attend cancer camps. The Foundation likes to think that its gifts fill in the cracks left by organizations that make much larger gifts.
