sado fronteras hace mucho tiempo,
centro monumental declarado de in-
dernidad:grandes centros comercia-
mano.Todos estos rasgos distintivos,
sumados a la extraordinaria situación
geográfica y su clima, a atractivos tu-
rísticos únicos y diferenciados,y a las
modernas infraestructuras, garanti-
zan Jerez como la elección perfecta
para vivir y visitar.
Historia y ActualidadHistory & the Present
Jerez la elección perfectapara vivir y visitar
Each of the many different cultures that
have settled here over the past few cen-
turies have had an enormous influence
upon the physical appearance of Jerez
and numerous archaeological remains
which bear witness to the fact can still
be found in the surrounding countryside
and within the city itself.
Archaeological remains from the Phoe-
nician Xera, the strongly Roman Ceret,
and the important Muslim Sherish,mer-
ge with the beauty of the later Christian
buildings to offer a wide range of archi-
tectural styles and distinctive edifices
which all combine to give Jerez a truly
individual urban physiognomy of great
beauty.
Few places in Spain can be said to en-
joy the international renown of Jerez gi-
ven that, thanks to its sherry wines, the
name of the city crossed international
borders many years ago and has since
gone on to become truly universal.
But Jerez is not just a city of wines and
beautiful buildings, it has much more to
offer than that: home of the Carthusian
horse,the fighting bull,cradle of flamenco
art, capital of motorcycle racing and home
to international sporting events, and on
top of all that, declared to be of Artistic
and Historical interest.
Nowadays Jerez is a large city where
long-standing traditions coexist in per-
fect harmony with the modern: large
shopping centres and wide avenues con-
verge upon the historic, cheerful and bus-
tling city-centre,where shopping and ta-
pas go hand in hand.
All of these distinctive features, together
with a privileged geographical situation
and climate, a unique and distinct tou-
rist attractiveness, and modern infras-
tructures, all make Jerez the perfect pla-
ce to live in and to visit.

Nestling in the south-western corner of
Andalucía, in the north-west of the pro-
vince of Cadiz, Jerez can be seen to en-
joy a truly privileged geographical loca-
tion: lying in a fertile area formed by the
plain of the Guadalquivir, on the banks
of the river Guadalete and just a short
drive from both the Atlantic beaches and
the Gaditana mountain range.
A marvellous geographical situation,mid-
way between the mountainside and the
coast, where over 3.200 hours of suns-
hine grace the town with mild tempe-
ratures year round. The gentleness of the
climate,with temperatures averaging 11º
C in winter and 25º C in summer, sof-
tened by both its proximity to the sea
and its very geographical latitude, me-
ans winters are mild and summers ple-
asant.

Since ancient times, alongside Sherry
and Flamenco, the horse has been one
of the strongest symbols of Jerez. A
period of great importance in this
long tradition was in the 15th century
when the Carthusian monks brought
the world famous Carthusian horse
to Jerez.
Today there are a staggering number
of equestrian events in which this no-
ble creature can be seen. The Royal
Andalusian School of Equestrian Art
and the Yeguada La Cartuja - Hierro
del Bocado, have weekly shows.The-
re is also the annual Horse Fair and
many equestrian events forming part
of the Autumn Festival.

Jerez's exceptional geographical loca-
tion, its close proximity to the Atlantic,
the local chalky soil, the palomino gra-
pe, and the careful ageing of the grape
must, all combine to give the world the
pleasure of this unique product known
the world over as sherry. Lovingly aged
in wine cellars often linked to cathedrals
due to their spacious silence. The pro-
duction of these wines is protected by
the “Official Regulating Body for the Au-

is the production of Brandy by the “Re-
gulating Body for Brandies of Jerez”.Both
products use the traditional ageing pro-
cess known as Solera and Criadera.Je-
rez's wine cellars are large spacious buil-
dings with high - tiled roofs. They are de-
signed in such a way to keep a constant
temperature and humidity in semidark-

Jerez, the Birthplaceof Flamenco Art
Jerez, Cunadel Arte Flamenco
Jerez está considerada la "Cuna del
Arte Flamenco". Esta ciudad ha sido
desde el pasado siglo, la ciudad que
más y mejores cantaores, bailaores y
guitarristas ha dado a la historia del
Flamenco.

Jerez is considered the “Birthplace of
Flamenco”.This city has been, since the
turn of the last century, the city which
has produced the most, and best, sin-
gers, dancers and guitarists in the who-
le history of Flamenco. The most im-
portant churches in Jerez, built after the
Christian conquest of the city, have lent
their names to its most traditional quar-
ters: Santiago and San Miguel, where
the roots of the Buleria are to be found.
In the very heart of the Santiago quar-
ter,located in the Pemartin Palace,stands
the Andalusian Flamenco Centre,equip-
ped with the most up-to-date audiovi-
sual technology, its specialised library
and extensive sound archives provide
an insight into the history and unders-
tanding of this very special art form
which is so deeply rooted in the spirit of
the local inhabitants.
Jerez offers the very best of Flamenco
each day in its famous tablaos, in addi-
tion to some very interesting flamenco
performances:from flamenco recitals in
the numerous Peña Flamenca clubs to
be found dotted around the city, the tra-
ditional Buleria Festival, in September,
to the famous Jerez International Fla-
menco Festival .
It takes place each year during Februaty
and March.

poderosa Sherisch musulmana, has-
patrimonio artístico de primer or-
den.
Su centro antiguo, declarado como
"Centro Histórico-Artístico", nos
ofrece barrios con auténtica solera,
de recónditas calles, plazas y rinco-
nes, donde fuentes y naranjos se pier-
den entre palacios, iglesias y bode-
gas.
Throughout its long history Jerez has
been strongly influenced by the different
cultures that have settled in its lands,
each leaving its mark upon the already
deep-rooted traditions of the city.These
legacies now form an essential part of
life in the city.
The cultures of Phoenician Xera, the
strongly Roman Ceret, the important
Muslim Sherish all made their presen-
ce felt up until Alfonso X,The Wise,
took Jerez back from the Moors in 1264
and was responsible for the conversion
of the city to Christianity. This melting
pot of cultures and knowledge has hel-
ped to enhance the artistic heritage of
the city.
The old centre, declared to be of Histo-
rical Artistic interest, is full of traditio-
nal, quaint streets and squares where
you can discover secluded, hidden cor-
ners mixed in amongst fountains, oran-
ge trees, palaces, churches and sherry
bodegas.

nicipales mas diversos y extensos de An-
ciones.
Jerez has one of the most extensive and di-
verse municipal areas to be found in all Anda-
lusia, just a few kilometres from both the Atlan-
tic beaches and the Gaditana hills. There are
numerous bull farms, haciendas and fincas spre-
ad out within its boundaries, as well as rolling
countryside, vineyards and hillside where na-
ture is seen to acquire its maximum form of
expression. Royal cattle tracks, lakes, ponds,
rivers,mountainside and meadows provide the
very best ingredients for many different types
of sport and active tourism.

Jerez ofrece un amplio abanico de po-
sibilidades a la hora de disfrutar de
la Naturaleza: un agradable paseo en
la propia ciudad en cualquiera de sus
numerosos parques y jardines, el dis-
frute de áreas, parques y reservas na-
turales protegidas muy cercanas de
especial importancia botánica y or-
nitológica y la posibilidad de practi-
car una infinidad de actividades al aire
libre por su extensa campiña y sie-
rra.
En la ciudad son numerosos los jar-
dines y zonas verdes, algunos de ellos
dentro de las propias bodegas,en los
cuales podemos observar numero-
sas especies animales y vegetales,mu-
chas de estas últimas traídas desde
América el pasado siglo por los bo-
degueros. Por otra parte son nume-
rosas las zonas húmedas alrededor
de la ciudad donde poder observar
numerosas especies de aves a lo lar-
go de todo el año.
Jerez offers a wide range of possibilities
when it comes to enjoying the country-
side and getting back to nature: be it a
leisurely stroll around the city itself or
through any of its numerous parks and
gardens, the enjoyment of the nearby
protected natural areas, parks and re-
serves of special botanical and ornitho-
logical interest,or the opportunity to par-
ticipate in an endless choice of outdoor
activities which take place in the exten-
sive surrounding countryside and nearby
hills.
The city abounds with numerous gar-
dens and designated green areas; some
of them behind the walls of the sherry
wineries themselves, where numerous
species of animal and vegetation are to
be seen, many of the latter having been
brought from South America over a cen-
tury ago by the winery owners. There are
also plentiful areas of wetland around
the city where many different species of
birds may be observed throughout the
year.

dialmente famosos Vinos, Brandies y
Vinagres de Jerez,que utilizados como
verdaderos ingredientes en innume-
rables recetas, permiten que Jerez
cuente con una cocina sorprendente
y de gran calidad.
Mariscos y pescados de la bahía, car-
nes y caza, ensaladas y guisos tradicio-
An extraordinary geographical location,
sitting between hillside and coast, me-
ans that Jerez enjoys the very best of
fresh local produce, to which may be ad-
ded the world famous Sherry,Brandy and
Vinegar of Jerez, used as main ingredients
in numerous recipes, thus allowing Jerez
to provide a surprisingly varied cuisine of
the highest quality.
Shellfish and fish from the bay, meat and
game, salads and traditional stews, each
different dish and tapa acquires its ma-
ximum expression when served "al je-
rez" or "a la jerezana", enhanced with
Fino sherry, Amontillado, Oloroso or Pe-
dro Ximénez, Brandy or an exceptional
Vinegar of Jerez.
The restaurants to be found in Jerez,
highly appreciated having developed in
quality over recent years, offer cuisine of
the highest level which is deeply rooted
in traditional products and culinary for-
mulae, guaranteed by professional chefs
of long standing experience.
