Pastors Desk Rooted in relationship Loving at all times? Born to share adversity? That’s quite a standard. Clearly the author of the Book of Proverbs (Proverbs 17:17) leaves no room for fair - weather folks, those who pro- fess care and concern for others when life is moving along smoothly but who exit at the first sign of crisis, (you know who they are). Whether we’re related by choice or by blood, there can be no thought of skipping town at the first sight of approaching storms or conflicts. To love at all times, in spite of the sometimes maddening aspects of the human condition that try our patience, in the face of significant disagreements and hurts that test the reach of our for- giveness, this is enormous. And this is exactly where our faith calls us: to cast our lot with our family, with the human family to name ourselves and one another as kin. Because we are. Meditations

Today’s readings challenge us to take a look at our priorities. It is natural to want the “good life” but we can become so focused on getting “things” that we miss what is really important. Reflect on what gives you the greatest joy. Think about some of the “things” you desire - a particular car, a house, some jewelry, whatever it may be that you wish you had. Consider how those things affect what gives you joy? Are you so busy accumulating things that you have no time to spend with family and friends - or God?

If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts. Psalm 95:7

“Friend, who appointed me as your judge and arbitra-tor? Then he said to the crowd, ‘Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions… This will be for all who store up treasure for themselves but are not rich in what matters to God.” A well known teacher reported that the early explorers of our land came, driven by four things – glory, gold, greed and God. Their exploits have been celebrated facing diffi-cult times and adverse conditions. If there was a lack of balance they can be forgiven. In our time we struggle to make ends meet, and never have enough. We know the importance of our good reputation, but are ready to put down another person. We speak of our faith and religious values, but are caught in a consumer society which taints our way of thinking, translating wants into needs. May we learn from the child who delights in the wrapping on a gift, rather than what is in the box. May we deny our-selves of one necessity, like sugar, in the coffee or a sec-ond beer, aware that someone else is in need. Greed is sneaky, it is easy to see it in the capital sins.

HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly

Missionary Cooperation Plan Sr. Betty Vetter, SDS will speak at all the masses on be-half of the Sisters of the Divine Savior, also known as Sal-vatorians, the weekend of August 13th & 14th. We will have a special collection to benefit the congregation, who minister on five continents to improve the quality of life among people of every faith and culture. Sr. Elizabeth (Betty) Vetter, SDS worked as a nursing in-structor for SDS home missions for the Lakota Native Americans in South Dakota. She also ministered in India and the Philippines. Despite the long distance between the Lakota tribe and people of Kerala, India, Sister Betty found many cultural similarities, especially religious prac-tices. Her experiences among people living in extreme poverty brought spiritual passages to life and revealed great generosity in sharing the goodness and kindness of Jesus as Savior.
