Soldiers of Mis-fortune: An IHL Action Campaign Do students know more about pop culture than International Humanitarian Law? A group of high school students from California organized an American Red Cross IHL Action Campaign to find out. Focusing on a topic they felt would resonate most with students (child soldiers), the campaign leaders engaged students in their community in an IHL “pre-test,” hosted a number of awareness raising events at their school related to IHL, and followed up their campaign with an IHL “post-test” to demonstrate that as a result of their campaign, student’s knowledge and interest in IHL had improved. American Red Cross Global Refugee Simulation & Conference “On Saturday, March 29 th The American Red Cross hosted a realistic, six hour refugee simulation, intended to educate participants about the challenges that refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) endure. Participants worked in groups simulating families escaping a war zone. They had to traverse minefields, cross a patrolled border, and find accommodation in a refugee camp, requiring them to secure food, seek medical attention and build a shelter, all while staying within assigned roles(GRSC). A digital conference took place following the simulation the next day. The global conference took place among a panel of experts over social media. Newsthink: British Red Cross “Sharing opinions, analyzing world events, and developing a critical understanding of the media are all things students get better at with regular practice. You can always rely on the regular newsthink emails to provide fresh and insightful stimulation for tutor time. ‘This is a great, school-friendly resource that is challenging and often shocking. It never fails to spark my tutor group's interest in the world around them and it's perfect for doing something exciting and useful in a short amount of time’" (British Red Cross). Topic Focus: Join the Canadian Red Cross for Our Next FREE Exploring Humanitarian Law Teachers Conference The conference is offered free of charge to all interested teachers in Ontario. Participants will receive comprehensive instruction from a Canadian Red Cross Legal Advisor, Delegates from the International Committee of the Red Cross who have worked in conflict zones and Ontario teachers currently using the EHL curriculum in their classrooms. Topics include the humanitarian perspective, limits in war, international justice, and international responses to the consequences of war. Conference participants will receive an EHL Toolkit with classroom-ready lesson plans and supplementary materials addressing a variety of different teaching methodologies.
