EGHS Parent Newsletter 2 2nd Quarter - November 2015
From the Desk of the Principal..........
Dear Grenadier Parents: As we complete our First Quarter at Elk Grove High School, I am happy to share some thoughts and exciting news with you. Here are just a few highlights from this fall.
1. Our new turf field has passed its first fall season with flying colors! 2. Our Marching Band has once again excelled at its competitions in
Grayslake, Wheeling, and at Robert Morris University, with the upcoming University of Illinois competition coming up this weekend.
3. Elk Grove High School hosted the “Made in Elk Grove” Expo, which
featured a visit to our Advanced Manufacturing Lab from Governor Bruce Rauner.
4. Our Girls Tennis Team was Sectional Champion, with Singles and Doubles players advancing to
the IHSA State Tournament. Junior Jelena Vujanic had an amazing run at State, reaching the Consolation Quarterfinals!
5. Elk Grove High School continues to host innovative student activities that bring our community
together, such as “Wildcard Wednesday” with the Cubs Playoff game, and the upcoming Ultimate Frisbee tournament.
We love to celebrate our students and their accomplishments, and we love to see them dedicated to making our school great! We expect more of the same throughout this entire school year. To the parents of the Class of 2019, please don’t forget to take advantage of the brand new “Harper Promise” program, a 2-‐year full scholarship opportunity for EVERY Elk Grove High School graduate in 2019 who meets certain criteria. The application deadline is December 15, and we are striving to get 100% of our 9th graders to apply. Please do not miss this amazing opportunity!! Many thanks to all of you who participate in our Parent Groups (Grenadier Athletic Boosters, Elk Grove Instrumental Music Association, Choral Boosters, Parent-‐Teacher Council, and Familias Unidas). We invite you to join us on the first Tuesday of each month for our “Parent Nation.” More information is available at http://eghs.d214.org. Finally, we would love to see you at this year’s PTC Craft Show THIS SUNDAY, November 1, from 10-‐4. It is one of the largest craft shows in the area, and the PTC’s fundraising efforts go right back to our students! See you there! All the best to you and your families. We look forward to seeing you soon at Parent-Teacher Conferences on November 4th (if not sooner)!! Sincerely, Paul Kelly

EGHS Parent Newsletter 4 2nd Quarter - November 2015
September 28, 2015 Dear Parent(s), RE: PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES, NOVEMBER 4, 2015 This year’s parent-teacher conferences, supported by Elk Grove High School’s Parent Teacher Council, will be held on Wednesday, November 4, 2015 from 5 - 9 p.m. This is a great opportunity to meet with your child’s teachers for seven-minute conferences. If your child has a D or an F in a class, you will receive a conference invitation in a separate mailing with special scheduling directions. Parents are invited to schedule appointments ONLINE from Monday, October 19th through Thursday, October 29, 2015. You may access the online scheduling system at any time of day or night within this registration window. We suggest that you identify 2 – 4 classes that you consider priority conferences and schedule those, though you may make appointments with as many or as few teachers as you wish. Keep in mind that in some instances, seven-minute conferences are not adequate. If you find yourself in that situation, or if the teacher’s schedule is full, you may make an appointment with the teacher for a follow-up conference. You may also email or contact a staff member at any time. The instructions for online scheduling can be found on the reverse side of this letter.

PBIS at Elk Grove High School The main focus of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is to build a positive school environment by providing appropriate expectations and supports for all Elk Grove students. Our goal is to help our students become more Respectful, Responsible, and Connected to create a school culture focused on students’ social, emotional, and academic success. Through its efforts over the past few years, Elk Grove has been recognized by the Illinois PBIS Network as an “Emerging” school because of the effective implementation of program strategies to improve student success. PBIS Committee has implemented a Gold Card Program to recognize students who embody the qualities of being Respectful, Responsible, and Connected. Faculty members who witness these random acts of kindness give a Gold Card to the student, who then turns in those cards to enter a weekly drawing for a chance to win a PBIS shirt for themselves and the faculty member who nominated them. In addition, students who receive three Gold Cards will be awarded a Golden Breakfast with their favorite staff member. Imagine a hearty dream breakfast of Golden Grahams, fluffy Twinkies, orange juice, bananas, and more! The latest Gold Card winner is Davyd Swington, nominated by Ms. Lavand, for being responsible in class.
Important Reminders To continue to create a positive learning environment we would like to stress the importance of attendance and arriving to classes on time. Please encourage students to attend all classes on time and be ready to learn. (Reminder to freshman parents: the Harper Promise Scholarship Program does care about students’ attendance!) Additionally, please remind students about our electronic policy. While many students have iPads that they may be permitted to use in class, students need to use technology responsibly and respectfully. This also means they are not allowed to use their cell phones in the classroom (unless instructed by the teacher).
To better communicate the goals and strategies of the PBIS program, the PBIS committee has created a website that you can visit at http://eghspbis.weebly.com. We are also on Twitter with the handle @EGHS_PBIS. @EGHS_PBIS. Please follow us to get the latest information and updates about he PBIS program. Thank you for your support as we continue to provide a first-‐class education for your students in an environment conducive to student achievement. Go Grens!
Sincerely, The PBIS Committee

While your natural instinct as a parent in an emergency is to go to your child’s school to safeguard him/her, please understand that doing so may significantly impede our response capabilities as well as those of our local emergency responders. It is vital that school officials and the Police and Fire Departments have access to our buildings to manage the situation and give care to students. In addition, it may be necessary to evacuate students to another location if there is immediate danger.
In an emergency or crisis situation, we need your cooperation and assistance and ask that you please follow the guidelines below:
In the event of a crisis that requires an evacuation/relocation of students, contact 847-‐ 718-‐7605 for
information. In all other emergency situations, contact 847-‐ 718-‐4400.
Tune to major local television and radio stations for information on the situation and instructions on how to reunite with your child. In some emergency or crisis situations, it may be necessary to relocate to another facility for safety reasons. Your designated reunification site is Forest View Educational Center located at 2121 S. Goebbert Road in Arlington Heights.
When you travel to the reunification site, please be sure to bring picture identification. We will only release students to their legal guardians, or the authorized individuals as listed on your child’s emergency forms.
We thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Our ultimate goal is to keep your children safe while they are under our care.

Cold vs. Flu: How to tell the DifferenceThe flu (influenza) is a serious illness and children and adults should stay home from school or work if they have the flu. It is spread from person to person through coughing and sneezing. You can also get the virus from touching contaminated surfaces. People with the flu can infect others 1 day before the symptoms occur and up to 5 days after getting sick. The flu symptoms include a high fever, chills, dry cough, sore throat, severe headache, exhaustion, muscle and body aches. Children can also have additional symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea (rare in adults). The symptoms come on quickly and the person should seek medical attention for proper diagnosis and treatment.
The symptoms of a cold are a stuffy or runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, hacking cough and possibly a low-grade fever. Unlike the flu, these symptoms usually come on gradually.
Treatment for the cold and flu are rest and plenty of fluids. If you have a fever over 100 degrees you should stay home and return when fever free for 24 hours without medication to prevent spreading the virus. If diagnosed with the flu by a physician, you may be prescribed an antiviral medication, but for it to be effective, the medication must be taken within 48 hours after flu symptoms begin. Antibiotics are not effective against viruses. For a cold, over the counter medications can alleviate some of the symptoms. Caution: Unless advised by a physician, a child or teenager with flu-like symptoms should not take aspirin. Aspirin taken with the flu has been linked to Reyes Syndrome. Use a medication that does not contain aspirin.
To help prevent the spread of cold and flu viruses wash your hands frequently with warm soap and water, cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing and throw the tissue away, or sneeze into your sleeve. Do not share drinks or utensils. Disinfect frequently touched surfaces in the home and school.
Another way to possibly prevent infection from the flu is to get vaccinated every year, especially if you have a chronic health condition, like asthma. October and November are the best times to get vaccinated.
For additional information on the influenza virus, visit www.cdc.gov/flu
For information on flu clinics call or check the web sites of your local town or village, Jewel-Osco, Walgreens, Dominicks or if residents of Cook County, the Cook County Health Department at 847-818-2860.

INFORMATION REGARDING “NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND” AND ELK GROVE HIGH SCHOOL
The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (better known as No Child Left Behind or NCLB) is a federal law meant
to ensure that all school children, whatever their economic background, can achieve high academic standards. Because of this law, Elk Grove High School receives funding from the federal government in the form of Title I and Title II-‐A grants. The Title I grant is awarded to the school based on the number of low-‐income students enrolled. This grant supports programs for children who are at risk of failing. The Title II-‐A grant helps pay for teacher training and professional development. Title grant funding covers part of the cost of programs at Elk Grove such as Saturday Success Academy and after-‐school tutoring, field trips to college campuses, Collegepalooza, and parent outreach meetings.
The NCLB law says that you can ask for information about the professional qualifications of your child’s classroom teachers, including licensing and academic degrees. You also have the right to know whether your child is being provided services by paraprofessionals and what their qualifications are. We are pleased to report all teachers in District 214 are highly qualified, as defined by the Illinois State Board of Education. Highly qualified teachers have a bachelor’s degree or higher and a state teaching license. In addition, for each core subject area of teaching responsibility, all teachers have either passed a content-‐area test or completed a college degree in that subject. All paraprofessionals are endorsed by the state as paraprofessional educators, having completed at least 60 semester hours of college credit or the equivalent.
Elk Grove High School and District 214 encourage you to become involved in your child’s education by attending parent-‐teacher conferences and by joining groups such as the Parent Teacher Council and the Latino Parent Council. You may find a schedule of parent activities elsewhere in this newsletter and on the school website. You can also support your child’s learning by monitoring attendance, ensuring that homework is completed, and avoiding distractions such as television and internet. It is district policy that parents, staff and students share the responsibility for improved academic achievement.
Thank you and please enjoy the rest of the school year.

Made In Elk Grove Manufacturing Expo
Elk Grove High School - October 12, 2015
Elk Grove High School filled with more than 1,000 people Monday, October 12th, for the third annual “Made-‐In-‐Elk Grove Manufacturing Expo”. Over 90 manufacturing exhibitors and Governor Bruce Rauner were involved in the Expo. Village officials heard much positive feedback from the exhibitors and attendees about Elk Grove High School.
“We are all a team here in Elk Grove, business and government working together so everyone wins,” Elk Grove Village Mayor, Craig Johnson said addressing the expo luncheon. Before the luncheon for expo exhibitors, Mayor Johnson took Governor Rauner on a tour of the Advanced Manufacturing Lab (room 198) at EGHS. Some students, who were out of school because of the Columbus Day holiday, were hard at work on welding simulators, operating high-‐tech CNC equipment, and giving workshop tours to vendors.
Rauner and Johnson met with Principal Paul Kelly, and advanced manufacturing teacher, Bill Merchantz, along with several students including Hanna Olson and Anna Connelly who were both intently practicing on a welding simulator. Peter Barts and James Loska are also pictured talking with Governor Rauner.
Rauner and Johnson also met with several Elk Grove Village-‐based exhibitors setting up in the school’s fieldhouse as they made their way to the luncheon. The governor praised Elk Grove High School and Harper Community College for coming together with businesses. He said every student deserves a great career and the community is providing a great opportunity for these students.

Dear Elk Grove Family and Friends: Elk Grove High School is holding its annual Thanksgiving Food Drive.
We will be delivering food baskets to needy Elk Grove families, as well as local food pantries. Last year we collected over 20,000 cans—we hope to set a new record this year! We can’t do it without you.
Please help us by donating cans and other nonperishable food items and dropping them off at the school. Hearty meals such as chunky soups, canned meat/fish, stews and pasta meals are suggested. These items will be donated to Vital Bridges/Harvest for Hope Food Pantry, which has a warehouse in Elk Grove Village and distributes food to numerous communities.
We are also looking for families and groups to participate in our Thanksgiving Food Basket Project. The recipients of these boxes will be Elk Grove families that are in need.
Following some guidelines and using the food checklist would be appreciated. A beautiful gift can be made if these suggestions are followed.
PLEASE:
1. Use one box that will securely hold all the items and can be easily carried. 2. Do not wrap the boxes. Student Council will decorate them for you.
3. Use the food list provided. Check off the items that are in the box, attach list to outside of food
box. Make sure all items are in the box. If, however, there are additional items, place them in a bag or regular box and we will use them as fillers.
4. Use medium-‐sized items
5. Eliminate all perishables! We have no refrigeration space!
6. A cash donation to purchase a turkey, butter, and rolls for your box would be appreciated. Put the donation in an envelope and give it to a Elk Grove staff person.
NO CASH SHOULD BE PUT IN THE BOX.
7. All completed boxes should be returned to Elk Grove High School no later than Wednesday, November 12th.
SPONSOR A BOX
If you are interested in sponsoring a basket for the Thanksgiving Food Basket Project please make a check payable to Elk Grove High School for $75 and we will assemble the basket at Elk Grove.
