2 EFTERSKOLE - AUTUMN ISSUE

Welcome to our comprehensive guide on the

Danish efterskole, a supplement packed with all

you need to know about this uniquely Danish

education institution.

The Danish Efterskole Association, an umbrella

organisation for all efterskoles in the country,

explains that the institution essentially is a one

year boarding school for students aged 14-18.

But, as you will soon discover, the efterskole is

much more than this! “Some schools focus on

special subjects like music, theatre and sports,

and whilst other schools offer special subjects

like farming, horse riding or even role playing.

The students usually chose a school that meets

their interests, and they spend a year togeth-

er with teachers and other students who share

this same interest,” says Sune Kobberø, Head of

communication at the Association.

The Association, who gives these schools legal

and economic counselling, and help with mar-

keting and communication, says that a year

spent in an efterskole, is a year of concentrated

development – both personal and academical-

ly. “We say that the students develop more in

one year than they would normally do in seven

years,” explains Kobberø.

Why choose efterskole? The benefits of choosing an efterskole are two-

fold according to Kobberø, who says that better

grades in the long term, and developing socially

are important outcomes of an efterskole educa-

tion. “Higher grades and fewer dropouts in high

school among students who have been to eft-

erskole, compared to those who have not been.

And, students who have been to efterskole finish

their higher education (college/university) faster

than those who have not been to efterskole. On

top of this, it is an experience for life with lifelong

friendships,” he says.

“More English speaking students from Denmark,

as well from abroad, attend an efterskole now

than a few years ago, because several schools

now offer courses taught in English,” says Kob-

berø. An example of this, is the increasing number

of schools offering the Cambridge programme.

Yet still, when it comes to an efterskole

education, there is so much more to

discover – keep reading to find out.

Many advocates of the Danish efterskole will

tell you that a year spent at an efterskole is like

several spent at another, more formal educa-

tional institution within Denmark. This uniquely

Danish institution, (the best explanation to other

international schools being that of the boarding

school) is a self-governing, independent, educa-

tional and residential institution for students typ-

ically aged 14-18. Students can choose to spend

one, two or three years finishing their upper sec-

ondary education at an efterskole.

The efterskole is based on the idea of com-

bining academic learning with that of general

‘life-learning’, as a means of introducing students

to life after school. The premise of this type of

school, is therefore to foster an understanding

of ‘the individual in a community’, and as such,

instil principles of solidarity, community and uni-

ty within students. There principles will equip the

young adults who attend, with the knowledge

needed to function and engage within a demo-

cratic society.

According to an October 2014 study by the Eft-

erskole Association, there are currently some 28

500 students attending approximately 250 eft-

erskoles throughout Denmark.

A culture of folk learningThe first Efterskoles were founded about 150

years ago, and were closely linked to the Danish

Folk High School and the educational ideas of

N.F.S. Grundtvig. Grundtvig envisioned schools

that provided enlightenment for life after school

in a more non-formal manner, rather than just

formal vocational training.

By the 1960s, the early ideals of the efterskole

were brought into questions, as problems recruit-

ing students to this path of study lead to debate

on whether to change the efterskole from being

like a Folkehøjskole for the young (non-formal

education), or to move towards the Folkeskole

(municipal school) with fixed curriculum and ex-

ams. By 1967 the efterskoles were permitted to

prepare students to pass some of the public final

examinations offered in Folkskoles, and from

this point the efterskole ceases to be closely

linked to the Folkehøjskole tradition – at least

in the aspect of non-formal education. The efter-

skoles however did still offer specialised educa-

tion linked to ‘enlightenment for life’, and sought

a balance between different educational ideas

and requirements offered in the Danish educa-

tion system. By 1975 the schools were permitted

to offer all the same final examinations as the

Folkeskole.

Today, each efterskole must define and describe

its own (and specific) basic values, as well as

conduct critical self-evaluation at the end of

each school year. This, according to Danish leg-

islation, is to ensure the standard of education

and training offered at the efterskole is being

maintained.

THE DANISHEFTERSKOLE

A school offering enlightenment for life.

3 EFTERSKOLE - AUTUMN ISSUE

The tradition of teachingIt is written in the Efterskoleloven (Danish Rule

of Law on Independent Continuation Schools

and their activities), that the primary objective

of the efterskole is to ensure enlightenment and

democratic culture, as well as offer courses that

focus both on educational and personal devel-

opment, as well as the general culture of the

learners.

Aside from the more personalised education of-

fered, one of the things that is unique about the

efterskole, is the teacher-learner relationship.

Teachers and learners are together all day from

the time they wake up until they go to bed. The

teacher is therefore responsible for both teach-

ing and supervision during, as well as outside of

school hours. This allows for a close, personal

and non-formal relationship between students

and teachers.

Most efterskoles offer the same subjects and fi-

nal assessments as public schools, but many fo-

cus on special subjects, such as; physical educa-

tion, music or theatre, or teach an international

or bilingual programme. As such there are many

efterskoles throughout Denmark that cater for

non-Danish students within the education sys-

tem. It is therefore common to have efterskoles

offer cultural/ language programmes designed

for Chinese, Spanish, Portugese, German, Italian,

Romanian, Hungarians or students of other na-

tionalities.

The costsWhile these schools are open to students from

abroad, unlike the more formal educational

institutions, all students (including Danish stu-

dents) must pay school fees. This fee, which

varies from school to school, generally covers

tuition, full board and lodging at the school and

all local excursions including study tours.

This supplement will guide you on everything

that you need to know about this independent

learning institution; from associated costs and

entrance requirements to government support

and the many types of schools available to in-

ternational students. If this type of independent

learning appeals to you and your child, then this

supplement will assist you in making the best

choice for their further education in Denmark.

ADVERTORIAL

The school is based on the Danish efterskole model, preparing students aged 14-17 for upper secondary edu-cation, while providing all teaching in English at a high academic level.

Within this English-speaking learning envi-

ronment students will focus on intercultural

awareness, international relations and per-

sonal development whilst specialising in ei-

ther football, dance, media or languages.

“The internationalisation of education and the development of in-

tercultural understanding are essential factors in education today.”

explains, Head of Studies - Alexander Mason

The International offers five internationally recognised Cambridge

IGCSE subjects for all students, as well as two international trips

including one to the US or Australia in 2017 with the aim of devel-

oping students’ linguistic and intercultural competence.

Students will also have a range of free-choice subjects to choose

from along with a wealth of internationally themed activities

throughout the year.

In August of this year, the Minister of Higher Education and Sci-

ence broke ground on the school’s brand new dedicated campus,

which will complement the fantastic sport and gymnastic facilities

already available at Vedersø Idrætsefterskole, The International’s

mother school.

Compared to public schools, the efterskole has

substantial freedom in terms of choice of sub-

jects, teaching methods and educational ap-

proaches. These vary in accordance with the

school’s political, religious or pedagogical orien-

tation. It is up to prospective students, and their

parents, to evaluate the suitability of each indi-

vidual school, depending on their own cultural

and learning requirements.

Why you should consider an efterskole educationIf your child is in two-minds about where to con-

tinue his/ her lower-secondary education, and is

considering options other than a more tradition-

al and formal, academically-orientated educa-

tion, then for these two reasons the efterskole

is for them:

1. Your child (between the ages of 14 and 18)

wants an independent, self-governing boarding

school offering general, vocational and inde-

pendent education:

An efterskole designs its curriculum according

to the ideas and wishes of the headmaster, the

school board, the teachers and the parents. It

must however be underlined that most efter-

skoles prepare their pupils for the same final ex-

aminations as those offered by the folkeskole.

Schools vary in size from 25 to 500 students, but

most of them have a minimum of approximately

100 students.

2. Your child would like emphasis placed on spe-

cial education and practical work:

Efterskoles offer a special opportunity for late

developers and non-academically minded chil-

dren, who have not flourished in the ordinary

school system. Several of these schools use

practical work to build up the self-confidence of

pupils, and to motivate them to learn and under-

stand the theory necessary to interpret and solve

problems that they may encounter in practical

work, and real-life situations.

What is on offer? There are a many number of efterskoles in

Denmark, each offering specialised formal and

vocational training programmes to students int

grades 8, 9 or 10. However, the most common

programmes on offer, but not limited to, include

schools who focus on:

✚ Students with special learning needs,

A number of schools do not divide students at

the standard grade level, but rather distinguishes

whether students are obliged to attend school

or not, i.e. compulsory education counted in the

8th-9th grades, versus non-compulsory education

– the 10th grade. The various schools also group

students in classes according to special learning

needs, and according to the Efterskole Associa-

tion, these students represent 10.7% of the total

number of students who attended an efterskole

in 2014/15.

State subsidiesStudents are entitled to state support, and mu-

nicipal councils do also offer additional support.

In general, parents can be expected to pay 33-

50 percent of their childs education, board and

lodging, while the state (through the school or

individual students) will subsidise the remainder.

In order to obtain state approval and subsidies,

an efterskole must meet the above-mentioned

requirements defining an efterskole.

Finding a schoolThe website Efterskole (http://www.efterskole.

dk/) offers a comprehensive look into individual

efterskoles in Denmark, detailing special require-

ments, subjects on offer, as well as the availabil-

ity of space per school. For prospective students,

if a school is full, it is possible to sign up for a

waiting list, or check out if the school offers spe-

cial (additional) courses.

The website provides search opptions for the

next two school years, 2016/17 and 2017/18, and

allows prospective students to search per region

and according to availability for boys and girls,

as well as for schools that offer general admis-

sion or for students who are dyslexic or who

have special learning needs.

8 EFTERSKOLE - AUTUMN ISSUE

Are you 18 years or older, open-minded and

have an outgoing personality, and want to teach

young people? If this describes you, then you

may be interested in taking up an intern posi-

tion at a Danish efterskole. The organisations

AIESEC and ICYE give young people the possi-

bility to work as interns at a Danish efterskole.

They are both internationally recognised youth

programmes, which offer special programmes

aimed at the Danish efterskole.

AIESECAIESEC is an organisation for university students,

and has programmes in 113 countries. In addition,

it facilitates the contact between students and

the Danish efterskole. The efterskole internship

will last for at least eight weeks, and is a cultur-

al exchange between the Danish students and

teachers at the efterskole and the intern.

AIESEC students are proactive young people

that come with loads of energy, fresh ideas and

a proactive mind-set to make a difference in the

communities they work in.

ICYEICYE is an organisation that arranges interna-

tional youth exchange programmes. One of

these programs is the Danish efterskole pro-

gramme, where young people become interns at

an efterskole in Denmark. This program focuses

on the international dimension in everyday life

and as a part of the education at the efterskole.

SAMSØ EFTERSKOLE – FOR EXTREME LEARNING!Samsø Efterskole is a school based on the ideas of Grundtvig and Kold, and is known for its many “extreme” subjects, including; diving, hunting, parachuting, flying, rugby, sailing and many more.

Parents choose our school because we don’t have set classes, and divide our classes accord-ing to subject (Danish, English, math, science), depending on the level of each student. In other

words, we don’t look at how old the students are, but rather the knowledge they have in each subject.

The most popular subject by far, is scuba div-ing. The students achieve PADI certificates: Open water, advanced and rescue. Each year we go to the Mediterranean to dive, hunt, play golf and enjoy the outdoors. We also allow our students to peruse their hunting license, sailing

license and golf certificate.

Samsø Efterskole is a once in a lifetime expe-rience where our 160 students to get the best chances of being integrated to the Danish so-ciety.

In recent years, efterskoles have become more

popular for Danish expats living abroad, as well

as for foreign expats living in Denmark, as more

schools now offer an International Curriculum.

According to Sven Primdal, principal at Skals

Efterskole, money is normally not a problem

for expat parents, and it seems as if many of

these families prefer an efterskole education

as opposed to the traditional Private Boarding

Schools. “This is because there is a closer interac-

tion between staff and students, and the school

values/ code of conduct are often more specific,”

he says.

It is for this reason, the many prospective inter-

national students, that a number of efterskoles

in Denmark offer the Cambridge International

Examination (CIE).

schools around the country offering Cambridge

rapidly increasing. “These 50 schools are efter-

A UNIQUE SCHOOL FOR CLASSICAL MUSIC ENTHUSIASTS

At Orkester Efterskolen, our teen-agers prefer Beethoven to Beyonce and they are offered the chance to fully immerse themselves in the world of classical music, amongst like-minded contemporaries. Our small school is situated in a beautiful part of west Denmark, near the stunning North Sea coast, and is just 95km from the country’s second biggest airport. Suited to students aged 15-17 years old, (Dan-ish school year 9-10), a year spent with us is an excellent springboard for students who want to go onto study A levels or International Bac-calaureate.

Orkester Efterskolen offers more than just musical education, as it also schools students in the na-tional curriculum, and to great suc-cess. However, whenever possible, the obligatory subjects are given a musical angle and the students regularly go on trips, for instance to the Royal Theatre or the Symphon-

ic Orchestra in Copenhagen. The school has recently added a pro-gramme intended for international students. Students live in shared accommo-dation – eight per cottage and two per room. Everyone has to muck in when it comes to cleaning and washing the dishes. There’s no classes during the weekends and students are free to go home, but many choose to stay, as there’s a variety of activities on offer. Our friendly staff ensures that students, particularly foreign ones, feel part of the community.

A recurring comment from past and present students is, that they really enjoy being part of a community where everyone shares the same in-terest - an interest that isn’t all that common amongst teenagers. To qualify for a scholarship, students must have a certain level of musical competence. Students should also be willing to learn some Danish.

ADVERTORIAL

The school offers three specialised programmes:The Orchestra Programme: Students join a symphony orchestra.

The Vocal Programme: Students sing both solo, and as part of a

chamber choir, combined with drama lessons.

Piano programme: Here, chamber music is practiced.

All students get weekly supervision in playing their chosen instrument.

So whether you want a career in classical music or just enjoy playing

music and fancy a change of scenery, a year at Orkester Efterskolen is

ideal for any young music lover.

International General Certificate of Secondary Education, strives to

give its Danish and international students both a personal and edu-

well as an English-language, project based 10th grade with no ex-

aminations, and two Cambridge classes (9th and 10th grade).

An international set of skills

Of the 150 students enrolled yearly at SKALs Efterskole, 50 per-

cent choose to study and be examined in the International Gener-

al Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE). The class, which is

approved by the University of Cambridge, is access-giving to the

International Baccalaureate (IB), which is offered by 18 Danish

gymnasia as well as numerous educational institutions all over

the world. Furthermore, if students take the 10th grade IGCSE,

the exam may qualify them to skip one year of the Danish three-

year version of the IB (the Pre-IB).

Wanting to learn

Students enrolled in SKALs Efterskoles regular 9th and 10th

grade classes are subdivided into several smaller groups with

varying academic levels and teaching styles in different subjects.

All classes have a strong academic focus and aim to prepare

students for the specific line of post-secondary study they wish to

pursue. This does, however, not mean that it is all about books.

SKAL’s Efterskole is about involving both your head and your

heart. Being a student here is not about being academically

strong; it’s about wanting to be so.

SKALs Efterskole is located in Skals, a town of approximately

2000 inhabitants, 12km from Viborg and 75km from Aarhus.

from across Denmark, offering a variety of ed-

ucational paths, and gain some first-hand in-

sight into why these schools are so popular with

young teens.

School: Samsø EfterskoleStudent: OskarOskar is 16, and was adopted from South Korea,

his parents are Danish. He said that he chose eft-

erskole because his sister went to an efterskole,

and that he just wanted to experience an efter-

skole life. “Because every time people talk about

an efterskole it’s always positive,” he explains.

“Efterskole has taught me how to live without

my parents, I mostly enjoy that you can walk

one meter to your friends and there are always

friends near you.”

Osker recommends an efterskole to all teens his

age, saying, “I definitely recommend efterskole

to every child because it’s a whole new (good)

lifestyle, and you will make many new friends.”

ing violin for 12 years and going to Orchestra bar.

I have previously gone to the MTV dance and

have played in both the string and musical or-

chestras. I chose Orchestra Efterskolen because

I love to play and listen to classical music, and

to be with others who share the same interests

as me.”

ing, “There is less focus on schoolwork and more focus on the social life and great experiences.” He even jokes that he has now managed to find himself a girlfriend and knows how to impress her!

Hector would recommend an efterskole education for the simple reason that it is an unforgettable year of your life, where you are sure to make tons of friends and memories.

School: Eisbjerghus International EfterskoleStudent: NicklasNicklas says that his Efterskole is something special, and that it feels al-most like family, admitting that he now has friends all over Denmark. He also says, “outwardly, I have always been a little ‘ahead of the curve’ be-cause I had friends who were older than me. But I lacked a degree of independence - and I feel that since I have been here, I have become more mature.”

“Additionally, it is great to have gotten some professional experience that I have been lacking, and here it is important to keep up, otherwise you quickly discover that you may be missing something. At the same time it’s really cool that you can always get help with homework either from your own teacher or one of the others.”

School: Samsø EfterskoleStudent: ConnorConnor was born in South Africa to parents from British and Danish her-itage, and says that he chose his efterskole in a bid to improve his grades, and make a lot of new friends. Connor says that “normal” (folkeskole) education was not doing anything to improve his grades, so he decided to make a change, “At an efterskole they focus on what you need to improve on instead of what the (normal folkeskole) student needs. You also create such strong bonds at an efterskole, and as a lot of people say: ‘one year at efterskole is the same as seven years at high school’, and it’s so true. The bond you get with teachers is truly amazing, they become more like your family.”

Other than improving his grades, Connor’s efterskole education has given him more confidence and allowed him to form new friendships. “Choosing to go to an efterskole was the best decision I could have ever made. I have learnt so much, not only how to interact with friends, but also that I have the freedom to become who I really am.”

“I wanted to be a year older when going to high school, and I've never been very good at making friends, so this was the perfect sandbox for me.” HECTOR, 14

“I definitely recommend efterskole to every

child because it’s a whole new (good) lifestyle,

and you will make many new friends.” OSKAR, 16
