THE UNIVERSITY

Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University is one and only one of its

kinds in the state. The University is located at Lonere, the place in the ranges of

Western Ghat, at the foot of Raigad fort, the place from where Chhatrapati

Shivaji administered his major activities. It is autonomous in nature and unitary

in its character. It was established in the year 1989 by the government of

Maharashtra. Although relatively young, the university is making its mark in the

field of research and technological services through its dedicated faculty and

disciplined students.

The University extends its services to the society by conducting grant in

aid courses at diploma and degree levels and non-grant courses at post graduate

and research levels. The University is in the vicinity of industrial belt

comprising Thane, Belapur, Nagothane, Patalganga, Mahad etc. The University

also offers education especially to rural woman with certificate course as

“Nursing Assistants”, training programmes to ITI instructor and fresh

engineering employees of various reputed companies.

The staff of the University is proud of working at this place; the students

take pride in learning here, and the visitors are overwhelmed to watch the scenic

nature and the peaceful ambience enriched with the culture of technological

education of high standards, amicable relations among students-fraternity and

co-operation among the staff members. The University has a conducted institute

FORWARD

It gives me an immense pleasure to put forward to this year book 2014-15

which contains the details of development of the department. I would present in

brief various aspects right from university to the students association and

activities in following narration.

THE UNIVERSITY

Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University has been established

by Government of Maharashtra by Act XXII of 1989. This is an Autonomous

Technological University of its own kind in the state of Maharashtra. It is a

unitary type University and offers Diploma and B. Tech courses in Electrical

Engineering along with other disciplines in engineering and technology. The

sprawling campus of this University acts as a sanctum seat of learning across

the country. The University attracts students with excellent academic credentials

from all over the nation and moulds them into engineers and technocrats, who

make it proud.

The University has highly qualified faculty, who are committed to impart

best kind of knowledge. This University has well equipped laboratories, where

testing and analysis is carried out for the benefit of the industries. Other

The faculty and staff members of the University believe that being the

best is not an easy task and have strove relentlessly to achieve and instill in the

students a sense of commitment. The environment in the University promotes

innovation in students.

DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

The Electrical Engineering Department was established in 1995 with the

sole objective to produce sound, knowledge based, skilful electrical engineers.

The courses offered are;

1) B. Tech (Electrical Power )with an intake of 60 students in 1995

2) M. Tech (Power System) with an intake of 18 students in 2008

3) Ph. D for research facility in 2008 - Five students are carrying out their

research as on date

Looking into the present trend of knowledge engineering, the department

aims at strengthening its available resources, updating the laboratories and

library by subscribing international journals like IE, IEE, IEEE so as to improve

the quality of diploma as well as undergraduate instruction. This will also help

to create an awareness of the national power scenario, industries and public

sector undertakings (PSU).

Department organized the conferences continuously from 2006-2015

under the banner “TECHNOTREND” Those have been a grand success. For

The current year 2014-15, Technotrend has become a part of ‘Cynosure’, a

national event held during 21-23 March 2015.

Accreditation: The department has faced the N B A accreditation

program twice i.e during March. 1995 and October 2003 and has been place

with good remarks thus getting accreditation status for three years every time

and due for accreditation in this year. The department made a contribution

during the NAAC assessment program where the University has been placed in

Grade B for a period of five years.

Quite a good number of students compete in the competitive

examinations like GATE and GRE. Many students go abroad to perceive higher

studies. Our M.Tech students are involved in the design and development of

innovative projects and publish the work through standard conferences and

journals. Few research scholars are involved in effective research work. As an

essential part of the academic schedule, the students undergo industrial training

every year during summer through tireless cooperation of industries of repute

around us. The students make a positive mark for themselves in the industries,

where they undertake this training.

Students are regularly placed in advance through campus interviews at

leading organizations like Siemens, Crompton Greaves, MSEB, Gharda

Chemicals, Global India Ltd., TCS, Cognizant, Neon InfoTech, Hyper Thermal,

etc.

There is an overwhelming participation of students of this department in

annual sports, annual social gathering, NCC and National Service Scheme

(NSS) Units.

ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATION (EESA)

EESA is a dynamic and all round forum through which students of

electrical engineering can foster their talent leading to their overall

development. EESA actively organizes expert lectures and personality

development programmers by inviting eminent personalities from the industries

and institutes of repute. It also conducts regular aptitude and technical tests to

keep the students prepared for various competitive examinations. It has

developed its own library, which includes technical reference competitive books

etc. The association arranges field visits for the students to various prominent

industries to reinforce the theoretical knowledge.

EESA is one of the most active student associations, which not only

concentrates on technical activities but also helps to improve the students’

participation in co-curricular as well as extracurricular activities. Thus, it helps

the students in developing various facets of their personalities to blossom as

complete individuals.

Electrical engineering department is established in 1995 with an intake of

60 students at UG. I am proud to be the founder member of the department and

happy to note that based on excellent performance of students and staff the

department has got accreditation from NBA for successively two terms from

2003 to 2006 and 2006 to 2009. The beginning of a P.G. course in power

system with an intake of 18 students is an extra feather to the department to

initiate research activity. The registration of research scholars in new areas of

power system and power electronics adds strength to research activity of the

department.

With the improved faculty profile, state of art laboratory equipment,

library facility and placement services the department is heading towards

accreditation for forthcoming period. At this juncture I sincerely acknowledge

the commendable work rendered by EESA. I take this opportunity to convey my

whole hearted blessings to all my dear students and wish a bright and

prosperous future to one and all.

The department of electrical engineering is progressing very fast since

1995. I have witnessed this since from 2nd September 1997 till date. Department

of electrical engineering is expanding in multidirectional and multilevel; EESA

has been established around the year 1998; and Dr. P. K. Katti Sir lay down

foundation of EESA and I was in the supporting role to this. From this platform

we organized different technical visit to different places such a–s koyna P. P.

Tata power station at Bhira, Gas P. P. at Uran, HVDC station at Padhge 440 KV

RSS at Nagothane etc.

Electrical engineering students are encouraged to participate in state and

national level paper presentation in different states of India. In the past this

platform has been used to arrange the technical objective test for third and final

year B.Tech Students. Also EESA organized the welcome party for first year &

send off party for the final year every year with delicious dinner party with the

help of 2nd& final year students.

Apart from this EESA has organized no. of technical seminars & guest

lectures of technical experts from different organization such as BARC, WCE

Sangli; MSEB etc. A carried guidance programme was also arranged by EESA.

Campus interview was started through this movement of student’s organization

very first in history of BATU. I wish from core of my heart a ground success to

EESA in all the way for its all-round development.

President Speaks...

Hello Friends,

Electrical Engineering Student Association observed another great session

2014-2015. Several events conducted for the students during session, excellent

team work assured successful execution of the plan and well conduct of the

event.

I remember well, the teacher day celebration 2014 was filled up with great

messages from the dear teachers. We are always grateful to them for being with

us as a contact source of inspiration and guiding us at every movement. The

‘Smrutigandha’ conducted by third year students in April 2015 was exciting.

Then industrial visits- Rajasthan 2014, BARC-2014, Padagha - 2015 provided

good exposure the student to the new environment. They were quite informative

from several aspects. Sincere thanks to Naresh and Sachin (BABA) for

organizing the same. Sport events- football match, cricket match 2015 played an

important role in bringing everyone together and gave opportunity to the youth

to show the athlete instinct in them…

I would like to say consistent hard work, good co-ordination and mutual

understanding among the team members provided to be fruitful and received

applauds. The same assured a successful session…!

The vice president : Bhushan Mahajan. Treasurer: Prasad Mahajan, Secretory:

Revankumar Mahajan (all mahajans) your role has been vital throughout the

session. I appreciate your sincere efforts for the session. Also I would like to

acknowledge Naresh Ahire and Popat More for their significant support.

Moreover we are grateful to Dr. P. K. Katti for their constant guidance. Sincere

thanks to Mahesh, Smita, Priyanka, Kajal, Purva, Aditya, the students and the

professors of the department for their contribution to EESA Magazine 2015.

It has been great experience to be a part of the excellent team and we all

enjoyed working in friendly atmosphere. For the year to come, may EESA

society keep up the spirit and continue with the good work. Best wishes to

association. Here I would like to address the students

Efforts do turn out to be fruitful, you need to be patience and keep working.

Consistent hard work has always been the key to success!

On the behalf of the faculty of department, I wish all the best to the students and

Hybrid Renewable Energy System for Rural Electrification in

Smarter Way.

Nagesh Sambhaji Dudile (MT2013706): -

ABSTRACT: - Large portion of world Population lives in a remote areas that

are geographically isolated or grid supply sparely available. Also consumer

expects a mobile form of energy. These demands are for professional need or

rural electrification. Due to limited reserve of conventional energy sources i.e.

fossil fuels and global environment concern. For the use and generation of

electric power it is necessary to use Renewable Energy sources (RES). Hybrid

renewable energy system (HRES) with conventional energy sources is the ideal

system for rural electrification and to provide reliable for of energy to

consumer. This paper discussed the HRES for rural electrification & advantages

of RES over the Conventional energy sources also control of power flow and

frequency fed to the load.

Dynamic State Estimation Analysis by Kalman Filter on

Power System. Omprakash shrawan Mankar (MT2013710):

Abstract--“State estimation (SE) is a technique used to find unknown values of

the state variables based on some imperfect measurement. This method uses

statistical criteria to estimate the actual value of those unknown variables, state

estimation is an essential method used for monitoring power system, dynamic

state estimation of a dynamic state is the indispensable control and stability

prediction under transients conditions, a non-linear Kalman filter was developed

and used to estimate the state of the system based on measurement.

Remote Monitoring and Controlling of Induction Motor.

Komal P Patil (MT2013712)

Abstract- Comprehensive data collection, monitoring, and control play an

important role to improve the reliability and efficiency of system. It also helps

to avoid unexpected machine failures. Induction motors are used worldwide as

the workhorse in industrial applications. The automated management of

induction motor is necessary in various industrial applications. This paper

proposes a remote monitoring and control of an induction motor based on

Zigbee communication protocol, where wired communication is more

expensive and difficult to employ due to physical conditions. A module of

transducers and sensors monitors the parameters of induction machine and

transmit the data through Zigbee Protocol. A microcontroller based system is

used to collect and store data and accordingly generate control signal to

start/stop the induction machine wirelessly. Moreover, a database is built to

execute online measurements and to save the motor parameters received by

radio frequency (RF).

“Enhancement of transient stability and efficiency of Power system using

PMUs”

Shashikant Prasad (MT2013714)

Aim

To enhances the power systems stability, reliability, security, efficiency and

environmental friendly operation using the Wide Area Measurement systems

(WAMS) and Indian Smart Grid realisation using WAMS.

Objectives

To understand the challenges in realisation of Indian Smart Grid, increase the

transient stability and reliability of Power System with the help of real time

data(synchrophasors), total automation for monitoring, control and protection

using synchrophasor as a tool in WAMS, increasing security, efficiency and

environmental friendly operation using IED and Computer application.

TITLE :- STUDY AND MODELLING OF UHVDC

TRANSMISSION WITH DEDICATED METALLIC RETURN

Abstract :-High voltage DC Transmission has been alternatively used for large

amount of bulk power point to point transmission over long distance. UHVDC

has now enhanced power carrying capacity even more. Most of these projects

uses Earth electrode as a return path, during the operation DC ground potential

rises which has adverse effects on buried objects. Use of Dedicated Metallic

Return instead of earth return will put an end to such problem.

SONALI BHAUSAHEB SHINDE- MT2013717

Title: Smart Energy Management Technique by using Smart Meter

Today’s era is called as ‘Age of Automation and Intelligence’. The

automated electrical system needs more advanced communication,

infrastructure and resource management. Due to some limitations of

conventional grid such as centralized generation, high line losses, poor

infrastructure and regulatory concerns the system automation is not an easy

issue. To improve the generation, T&D efficiency, the intelligent sensors and

controls, automated smart switches and substations, robust communications and

other technologies, the smart grid will be able to integrate all types of

generations, and storage systems preclude power outages and surges to a

considerable extent, predict problems before occurrence and automatic healing

if they occurs. This dissertation focuses on smart energy management

techniques by using one of the smart infrastructure components called as ‘Smart

Meter’. The smart meter acts as communication and controlling agent between

utility and consumer.

Every one of us wants to live in a safe environment so that we can feel secured and

protected. No one wants to come out from their cocoon. What may be the reason behind this?

Can you guess? No. don’t worry, I will tell you. Its human tendency to seek the place where

one can feel protected. There is nothing wrong with it. But the thing is that one will never

know their abilities and utilize it completely.

In life, you have to prove yourself at different stages. To do so, you must come out

from your cocoon and must go beyond comfort zone. Then and only then you will achieve it.

Let me explain this with example. When we were a child, then also we struggled for making

our identity in class. It takes some time for everyone to make their own place in society,

college or it can be anything.

Let’s take another example. There was one famous singer. In her childhood, she was

very much frightened to sing in crowd. When she was alone, she used to sing a song. Her

voice was so melodious. One day, her best friend came to know about her passion for singing

and then she decided to support her. There was a singing competition in their school. Her

friend somehow manages singer to participate in competition. Finally, that day came in her

life when she stands in front of the crowd and starts singing. She was so scared to see the

crowd. She stopped for some time and closes her eyes. She remembered all the efforts which

she had taken to become a singer. Then she gathered all the strength and tried to sing well.

She sang the song so nicely that everyone in crowd appreciated her. It became possible just

because she took courage, went beyond her comfort zone and did the thing excellently.

Every one of us have power to do what we want. But the problem is we don’t want to

face difficulties, challenges. Rather this makes us stronger and mature. We take it in a

negative sense. We must look at this as opportunities for us. Then what are you waiting for.

Come out of comfort zone and make your destiny.

Discover ways, discover yourself.

STORY OF CHAIN SMOKER

My alarm goes off, so I immediately get up out of bed to shut it off. At that same

moment, I think about smoking. Instead, I jump back into bed for a bit and rest some more.

But the initial thought of smoking does cross my mind.

When I do finally get up, a cigarette is the first thing I reach for. I don't even go to the

bathroom first, I grab a smoke instead. The first one of the day is always the best, reminding

me why I'm like this in the first place. It tastes great!

I usually give myself 30 minutes or so until I have to get in the shower and get ready for

work. In that span of 30 minutes, I'll smoke at least another cigarette, 2 at the most. So that

makes 3 now before I've even showered. Of course after I've showered and gotten dressed, I'll

have another. For some reason, the fresh feeling of being all nice and clean makes me want to

light up. It's a big trigger, don't ask me why, it just is.

So, off to college I go. I open the door, leave my apartment, lock the door behind me, and

light up another one. It's fun to puff away on my walk to the bus stop. I like to think about my

day and what's going to potentially happen at the same time.

If I time it right, the bus will arrive within 5 or so minutes of me getting to the stop. But, if I

somehow miss it, or it arrives too early and leaves without me, that will give me a reason to

smoke another one while I wait for the next bus to come.

Eventually it arrives. How many have I had so far? I've had 6 cigarettes already, and it's not

even noon yet. Pretty disgusting, isn't it?

I get off the bus and have another. I've got about a mile walk to my class, so deep down I

know I can have up to 3 more if I really wanted to. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't.

Subconsciously, I'm preparing myself for all the when I can't go outside.

Of course I smell like an ashtray when I walk in. I don't notice it, but I'm sure everyone else

does. I bet they think I smell gross, but I can't tell because smokers can't smell themselves.

So, because I had so many before the class, I have enough nicotine in my blood to last for a

couple hours. What does that mean? It means I can work for 3 or 4 hours and not intensely

crave nicotine. I'll be fine for my work shift, but I will get crankly towards the end of it.

But as soon as I get the chance, I'm going outside to have another. I don't think I smoke too

much, only 1 or 2 at the most while at work. That isn't bad, right? I see others have more than

me, so I'm OK.

Page 115: EESA Magazine

115

Before you know it, college is over. How many have I had now? I've had 11, and now it's

nighttime. Any of this ring a bell? This is everyday life for me.

I leave college and immediately light up another. It was a rough day of work, and I deserve it.

It's my treat for working so hard. And yes, back up to the bus stop I go, walking that mile. I

almost always have two in this time frame. If my bus arrives within minutes, great! If not, I'll

have another while I wait, no big deal.

Finally, the bus comes, and back home I go. When I get dropped off, I have a cigarette on the

walk back to my apartment. It's the natural thing to do. I like to reflect about my day at work

while I'm walking home.

What's the running total now? I've had 14, which is over half a pack already, and I just got

home from work!

I open the door to my apartment, and immediately get greeted by my kitties. They love me so

much, they can't wait till I get home. I start to get settled, pop open a beer, and before I even

take off my work uniform, I light up a cigarette. I may even have one before I go to the

bathroom. It doesn't matter how bad I need to go, nicotine comes first.

I live by myself, so I don't worry about smoking in my apartment. It's only me, so who cares,

right? If I was expecting company, I'd go outside or open a window, but for now, I'm fine

with staying inside.

I'm a computer nerd, so I like to sit around most nights and fiddle around on my computer,

surfing the Internet.

The Rain It’s a very nice atmosphere this evening.

The clouds are thundering with might. The lightning amazingly luminous. The

wind is wild and fiercely flowing all around; untamed & insane.

It seems like some kind of tribal ritual of nature to call the sacred deity of

RAIN; Rain that transforms everything; Rain that is fierce as well as soft. It can

bring destruction but without it none can survive.

Rain has traits of nature.

Birds are enjoying the happy wind, expanding their wings and flying over it,

trying to catch its pace and motion; trying to be like it.

The lightning and thunder have become stronger now; they have given the

signal. And as I can see with blurry vision in dim light, tiny water droplets fall

down from the clouds; the mighty clouds. The droplets seem like the children of

Mother Nature bestowing love and mercy.

The wind has become stronger now, thunder louder and lightning more

luminous as the darkness comes in. The lightning are the fire torches which

guide a way, the thunders are the beatings from drums and the wind are the

flowers which bring surges of fragrances to freshen the atmosphere, these all are

the calls for the return of The King; The Unrivalled, Undisputed King who will

fight and relieve everyone from sadness and bliss them all with HAPPYNESS

with soothing cool rain.

As the water droplets fall on the leaves, they are softly taken down to the

ground to sooth mother Earth, who will thus protect and nurture us.

As the lightning falls down, it looks like a heavenly meeting of sky and Earth,

both advancing their hands and greeting each other. This meeting is so hearty

and passionate that sky gives a surge of energy to the earth, to reawaken her

spirit; the energy that flows in our body; the LIFE ENERGY.

I wish this energy flows in the body of each and every living creature who is

sad, broken and lost all spirit; to fire sparks in the ashes of their heart, to give

them a rebirth, to awaken their spirits and let their soul fly happily ever after.

Page 117: EESA Magazine

117

I pray to the heavenly energies to grant us freedom like wind; that is free and

fierce.

Let us be like the lightning; that has an ever luminous aura.

Let our hopes and will be like thunder which can be heard hundreds of miles

away.

Like lightning & thunder, let us be working men rather than talking one.

Let us be like Rain, the harbinger of Life and HAPPYNESS.

Let us be like mother earth who nourishes everyone equally.

Let us be like trees who are ever benevolent.

Let us be happy, joyous and blissed.

Let us be a part of Mother Nature.

LET US BE LIKE HER!!!

Plastic pollution

Plastic pollution involves the accumulation of plastic products in the environment that

adversely affects wildlife, wildlife habitat, or humans. Exposure to many of the chemicals

that these plastics are composed of can also cause adverse effects. Plastic pollutants are

categorized into micro-, meso, or macro debris, based on size. Plastic pollution can adversely

affect lands, waterways and oceans. Living organisms can also be affected through

entanglement, direct ingestion of plastic waste, or through exposure to chemicals within

plastics that cause interruptions in biological functions. Plastic reduction efforts have

occurred in some areas in attempts to reduce plastic consumption and promote plastic

recycling. The prominence of plastic pollution is correlated with plastics being inexpensive

and durable, which lends to high levels of plastics used by humans. However, it is slow to

degrade.

Effects on humans

Due to the use of chemical additives during plastic production, plastics have potentially

harmful effects that could prove to be carcinogenic or promote endocrine disruption. Some of

the additives are used as phthalate plasticizers and brominated flame retardants. Through bio

monitoring, chemicals in plastics, such as BPA and phthalates, have been identified in the

human population. Humans can be exposed to these chemicals through the nose, mouth, or

skin. Although the level of exposure varies depending on age and geography, most humans

experience simultaneous exposure to many of these chemicals. Average levels of daily

exposure are below the levels deemed to be safe, but more research needs to be done on the

effects of low dose exposure on humans. A lot is unknown on how severely humans are

physically affected by these chemicals. Some of the chemicals used in plastic production can

cause dermatitis upon contact with human skin. In many plastics, these toxic chemicals are

only used in trace amounts, but significant testing is often required to ensure that the toxic

elements are contained within the plastic by inert material or polymer.

Page 119: EESA Magazine

119

It can also affect humans in which it may create an eyesore that interferes with enjoyment of

the natural environment.

Effects on the environment

The distribution of plastic debris is highly variable as a result of certain factors such as wind

and ocean currents, coastline geography, urban areas, and trade routes. Human population in

certain areas also plays a large role in this. Plastics are more likely to be found in enclosed

regions such as the Caribbean. Plastic pollution, more so in the forms of macro- and mega-

plastics, potentially serves as a means of distribution of organisms to remote coasts that are

not their native environments. This could potentially increase the variability and dispersal of

organisms in specific areas that are less biologically diverse. Plastics can also be used as

vectors for chemical contaminants such as persistent organic pollutants and heavy metals.

Defects in Animals

Similar to humans, animals exposed to plasticizers can experience developmental defects.

Specifically, sheep have been found to have lower birth weights when prenatally exposed to

Bisphenol A. Exposure to BPA can shorten the distance between the eyes of a tadpole. It can

also stall development in frogs and can result in a decrease in body length. In different

species of fish, exposure can stall egg hatching and a decrease in body weight, tail length, and

body length.

Reduction efforts:

Efforts to reduce the use of plastics and to promote plastic recycling have occurred. Some

supermarkets charge their customers for plastic bags, and in some places more efficient

reusable or biodegradable materials are being used in place of plastics. Some communities

and businesses have put a ban on some commonly used plastic items, such as bottled water

and plastic bags.

Page 120: EESA Magazine

120

Biodegradable and degradable plastics

The use of biodegradable plastics has been shown to have many advantages and

disadvantages. Biodegradables are biopolymers that degrade in industrial composters.

Biodegradables do not degrade as efficiently in domestic composters, and during this slower

process, methane gas may be emitted.

There are also other types of degradable materials that are not considered to be biopolymers,

because they are oil-based, similar to other conventional plastics. These plastics are made to

be more degradable through the use of different additives, which help them degrade when

exposed to UV rays or other physical stressors. However, biodegradation-promoting additives

for polymers have been shown not to significantly increase biodegradation.

Although biodegradable and degradable plastics have helped reduce plastic pollution, there

are some drawbacks. One issue concerning both types of plastics is that they do not break

down very efficiently in natural environments. There, degradable plastics that are oil-based

may break down into smaller fractions, at which point they do not degrade further.

WHO AM I?

Electrical Engineers, there’s no way we exist without them. We use units named after them,

we apply theories proposed by them. But how much do we actually know about the people

who started it all? Wait, do we even know them by sight??

1) A French Physicist and Mathematician, he started teaching himself advanced mathematics

at the tender age of 12. In coming years, his reading encompassed history, travels, poetry,

Philosophy and the natural sciences. In 1802, he produced a mathematical treatise on

mathematical probability Considérationssur la théoriemathématique dejeu (“Considerations

on the Mathematical Theory of Games”), followed by , Mémoiresur la théoriemathématique

desphénomènesélectro dynamiquesuniquement déduite del’experience (Memoir on the

Mathematical Theory of Electrodynamic Phenomena, Uniquely Deduced from Experience) in

1827. He is regarded as one of the main founders of the science of classical

electromagnetism.

2) In 1873, while on a cable-laying ship bound for Lisbon, he had an unexpected 16-day stop

at Madeira, in course of which he became friendly with a family with three daughters. The

following year, he set sail for Madeira again. While the ship approached the harbour, he

signalled to one of the daughters with a marriage proposal. Needless to say, it was accepted.

Workwise, he had a career as an electric telegraph engineer and inventor, and took part in the

laying of the French-Atlantic submarine communications cable in 1869. At the age of 12 he

won a prize for translating Lucian of Samosata's Dialogues of the Gods from Latin to

English. And he is widely known for determining the correct value of absolute zero as

approximately -273.15 Celsius.

3) He was a French Physicist whose name is included in the list of the 72 names inscribed on

the Eiffel Tower. From his experiments on the torsional force for metal wires, he derived the

following result

"... the moment of the torque is, for wires of the same metal, proportional to the

torsional angle, the fourth power of the diameter and the inverse of the length of the

wire..."He is also considered a pioneer in the field of geotechnical engineering for his

contribution to retaining wall design. And before you wonder why he’s in this list, he

developed the definition of the electrostatic force of attraction and repulsion.

4) This Sherlock Holmes lookalike has a rather chequered career-graph. He enrolled at the

Austrian Polytechnic in Graz, Austria, in 1875 on a Military Border scholarship. During his

first year, he never missed a lecture, earned the highest grades possible, passed nine exams

(that’s nearly TWICE as many required), and also started a culture club. However, at the end

of his second year, he lost his scholarship and became addicted to gambling. During his third

year, he gambled away his allowance and his tuition money, later gambling back his initial

losses. He never graduated from the university and did not receive grades for the last

semester.

In his final years, he walked to the park every day to feed the pigeons and even

brought injured ones into his hotel room to nurse back to health. He probably suffered from

obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in his later years. He fired a secretary because of her

weight and on several occasions, directed a subordinate to go home and change her dress.
