Keeping God’s Plan Our PlanIn the fall, we hosted an evening meeting during which we presentedan overview of our just-published strategic plan. In the Q&A sessionthat followed, one of the questions voiced was especially perceptive. The concern was not that our current plan was somehow inadequate, unrealistic, or unfaithful. No, this parent wanted to know how wewere planning to monitor the plan itself – not just in the sense ofputting the elements in place but also regarding the ongoing evalua-tion of the goals in the plan. How would we know if this plan remainsGod’s plan for us down the road? That is a great question!
The key to keeping our plan on track – both aligned faithfully to God’s plan for the school and effectively meeting the changing needs of our students – is to realize that it is going to take a multifaceted approach, an approach which involves accountability, humility, and flexibility. We must start with the recognition that accountability has to be built into the implementation and evaluation process. Good intentions cannot ensure success. Our planning consultant warned us that the desk of the headmaster is where good ideas and timely feedback go to die, buried under a growing stack of “tyranny of the urgent” events! Therefore, our newest standing committee, the School Improvement Team, has been charged with the ongoing monitoring of our plan. This team, composed of board, administrators, faculty, parents, and students, will meet quarterly to review the progress to date and to plan for the coming months. Between meetings, these dedicated and excited folks will be involved in putting feet to the plans as well.
In addition to accountability, the school leadership must implement the plan with great humility. Our “pet” ideas may not pan out as anticipated. We must be willing to listen and honestly evaluate feedback. Some of that will take the form of continued surveys and feedback forms. We will also periodically call for some focus groups to see if what we think is happening is really the case. We also must continue to encourage grassroots innovation. Some of the most exciting projects at the school over the past few years were based on ideas generated from the front lines! Your ideas, feedback, and concerns are necessary for our strategic improvement.
Finally, we must remain flexible in our approach to our plan. God’s truths are eternal and unchanging. The world in which those truths are applied is ever changing. A concentrated strategic planning event is worthwhile and can provide a baseline with relevant benchmarks for measuring success for an institution. The written plan can also serve as an impetus for change, focusing attention and resources and motivating people to action. However, we must never forget that the planning process is just that, an ongoing process and not just an event. I truly believe we have made a faithful start with a great plan. To remain faithful in our calling here at Decatur Heritage Christian Academy, we must continuously plan for the next challenge God places before us. Please hold us accountable. Please pray that we will cultivate a spirit of humility. Work with us to stay flexible, approaching each new day with a plan in hand and open to God’s leading.

The Funding Paradigm – Strategic Advancement
!n our current strategic plan document, two of the eight goals address the school’s 7inances. The fact that 25% of our goals moving forward are dealing with money might lead you to believe that this area is a problem, but the reality is quite the opposite! God has blessed Decatur Heritage Christian Academy above and beyond anything we could have imagined. We raised over HI million in our 7irst capital campaign. !n the midst of the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, our enrollment has held steady, providing a solid operating budget. The participation in and funds raised by our Booster Club, Heritage Celebration, and Annual Fund campaign have been phenomenal. We are truly blessed!
No, our need for new 7inancial initiatives is driven by a desire to be good stewards of the many blessings we have already received from God. The other six goals of our strategic plan delineate ways in which we will continue to improve our program and expand its reach for the bene7it of the community. Those goals, from adding new classes to implementing additional technology to establishing athletic 7ields, will require more resources, hence the need for new strategies and tactics in the 7inancial area. Brie7ly, let me mention Nust two of the ways we are researching in order to enhance our available resources:
Pstablishment of an Advancement Qf7iceWe are currently in the planning stages of the search for an advancement of7icer for the school. This member of the administrative team will focus time, energy, and efforts on improving the promotion and marketing of the school along with increasing the effectiveness of our current fundraising tactics. Additionally, this position will be vital as we add new elements to our efforts – concentrated events such as another capital campaign along with ongoing initiatives such as the establishment of an alumni association and an emphasis on planned giving.
Decatur Heritage’s Next Capital CampaignTeveral of the goals identi7ied in our strategic plan are of such a magnitude as to require a capital campaign to adequately address. The board is in the early stages of assessing the readiness of the school for a campaign. With an eye to both the needs of the school and the external economic environment, the board is diligently working to discern proper timing and scope for our next campaign. Please pray for wisdom and clarity for the board as they weigh this momentous decision as we look ahead to the next school year and beyond.

My name is Courtney Boswell, a 2005 graduate of Decatur Heritage. I was very excited when Mrs. Libby asked me to do the feature because my family and I have been reading them for years. I enjoy being able to read the updates about the alumni.
I attended Decatur Heritage from seventh grade all the way through graduation. This school holds a lot of memories for me. My classmates and I went through quite a bit during our time at Decatur Heritage and all of those experiences helped shape the woman I am still becoming. I would have to say that throughout all of my time in school I had several wonderful and godly individuals invest time and love into me, but the most influential person I came into contact with was Coach John Cochran. He instilled values, qualities, and ethical fortitude that I was seeing at home, but it meant more coming from someone who chose to care about me rather than had to. He was a coach that was concerned more about me off the court than on the court. He wrote countless letters of recommendation and even wrote a personal letter to Coach Pat Summit of the Lady Vols on my behalf. I will always be appreciative of my time at Decatur Heritage, mostly because of the faculty who encouraged me to be better at everything I did.
From high school I went on to college at the University of North Alabama, where I was given the push. My God led me to apply to law school at Birmingham School of Law where I am currently. I have a wonderful church family here in Birmingham and a group of believers around me that I am truly blessed to know. God has been faithful throughout my post high school life, and I attribute that to my relationship with Him that I developed while I was in the care of Decatur Heritage. He is continuing to grow and mold me into the woman He has designed me to be, and at twenty-four, I feel that I am exactly where He wants me to be. So to all of you sweet individuals who support and care for Decatur Heritage, I am a testimony that the education and support the students receive from the faculty is one in which the Lord is well pleased.
