Purpose of this experiment:

To calculate phase difference using dual trace / XY mode

THEORY:

P_D =

P_D =

Error =

STEPS:

Phase difference Measurement using dual trace :

o Set the separate / sum switch tp swparate .

o Set input coupling of both vertical channels ti AC .

o Connect YI to a sine wave voltafe from the function generator directly .

o Connect Y2 to a sine wave through the phase shift networt provided to you .

o Adjust the frequency and sweep rate to ger as stable display of at least one cycle .

o Adjust volt / cm settings on the toe channels to get nearlu equal peak to peak deflection of the traces .

o Measure the distance between the zero crossing of the traces to calculate the phase disserence .

Phase difference Measurement using XY mode : o Turn the sweep rate control knob to XY position . adjust the volts / cm

setting on YI to control the size of horizontal deflection and on Y2 for vertial deflection .

RESULTS:

f 1 = 400 H z w = 5 × 0.5 m sec = 2.5 m sec , d = 1 × 0.2 m sec = 0.2 m sec a = 1.7 , b = 0.8

f 2 = 800 H z w = 6.2 × 0.2 m sec = 1.24 m sec , d = 0.8 × 0.2 m sec = 0.16 m sec a = 1.3 , b = 0.9

f 3 = 1200 H z w = 4.2 × 0.2 m sec = 0.89 m sec , d = 1.3 × 0.1 m sec = 0.13 m sec a = 1.1 , b = 0.9

CALCULATIONS:

f 1 = 400 H z

o P_D ( dual ) = = 28.8˚

o P_D ( XY ) = = 28.1˚

o Error = = 2.43 %

f 2 = 800 H z

o P_D ( dual ) = = 46.45˚

o P_D ( XY ) = = 43.8˚

o Error = = 5.7 %

f 3 = 1200 H z

o P_D ( dual ) = = 55.72˚

o P_D ( XY ) = = 54.9˚

o Error = = 1.47 %

COMMENTS:

1. d: distance between zero crossing (cm).

w: length of one complete cycle (cm).b: y-intercept.a:largest vertical deflection.

2. Few percentages of error due to wires and old devices

CONCLUSION/UNDERSTANDING:

This is the first experiment in this course . In this experiment we calculate the phase shift using dual trace by set input coupling of both vertical channels to AC and connect YI to a sine wave V from the function generator and connect Y2 to a sine wave through the phase shift network , adjust the frequency and volt on the two channels to get nearly peak to peak deflection of the two traces and we find the phase difference measurement using X Y mode .
