Group Visits to Various Industries

Department of Electrical Engineering adopted a different model for industrial visits thissemester for their pre-final year students. Class of BE Sem 6 was divided in small groups of 4-5students and were assigned three industries which have to be visited during the semester. Visitwas planned to be a full day visit to give chance to students to closely study various activities atindustry as well as to interact with technical and HR staff. Students were expected to submitdetailed project report at the end of the visit. As a part of this students visited followingindustries. This model of industrial visit was appreciated both by students and industries andproved to be more effective compared to class visit.

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day – 17th May

Every year 17th May is celebrated internationally as WorldTelecommunication and Information Society Day. The day is celebratedsince 1969 to mark anniversary of the foundation of InternationalTelecommunication Union (ITU) and this year i.e. 2019 it is its 50th

anniversary. Initially this day was celebrated only as WorldTelecommunication Day. However as Communication technologies arebasic enabling technologies for handling information and much workhave been done in the combined field of Information andCommunication Technologies (ICT) in last 20-30 years, this day isrenamed as World Telecommunication and Information Society Daysince 2006. ITU is an international organization based in United

States, and work towards forming regulations and standards relevant to electroniccommunication and broadcasting technologies. Such standards help in setting up internationallyaccepted standards that enables global communication . For example, in simple terms it can beunderstood through an example that a computer system at one place can communicate with anyother system over the globe because both the systems as well as link between them operates onsome common standards that are internationally accepted.

One of the purposes of celebrating this day is to spread awareness in the community aswell as society about advantages of ICT and how this can be useful in driving the economical aswell as social growth. Further, it serves as a reason to bring together people working in the areaof ICT so that sharing of knowledge can happen for mutual benefits. Every year ITU declares atheme of current relevance over which experts, practitioners, industries as well as governmentsacross the globe undertake number of activities so as to spread awareness as well as boost thegrowth in the domain. The theme for year 2018 was Artificial Intelligence for Good whose goalwas to focus on how to harness benefits of artificial intelligence in ICT so as to improve efficiencyof any process or system and to improve living standards in society.

For year 2019, the theme proposed by ICT is Bridging the Standardization Gap. Asdiscussed, the main role of ITU is to frame standards at international level. Looking at history ofthis process, it can be observed that those countries that are relatively advance in technology, i.e.generally the developed countries, have played a major role in formulating such standards andthere are very less inputs or involvement from developing or underdeveloped countries. This hascreated two major issues. First is that each country has its own peculiarity and constraints –demographic, geographical, social or economical and hence requires special consideration whileframing standards for implementation and sustainable growth. Second is that because of lessinvolvement and awareness countries find problem in understanding, implementing andpracticing these standards. This creates – what is called a Digital divide between developed anddeveloping countries.

This year’s theme is aimed to gap this divide by ensuring that developing countries areincreasing their ability to contribute to, and benefit from, the important ICT standardizationwork and achieve sustainable development goals.
