Bradford College's English Language Centre delivers a wide range of British Council-accredited courses throughout the year. Our courses are suitable for international students over the age of 18 of all levels who wish to learn English.

We offer excellent Homestay and Residential accommodation run by a national charity called UNIPOL and a low-cost social programme for all our students.

The English Language Centre is a friendly and professional place for you to improve your English skills for professional development, further study or just for fun.

WELCOME TO BRADFORD COLLEGE ENGLISH LANGUAGE CENTRE

COURSES

•• When you arrive, we will test your English and you will then join a group working at your level.

•• You will study with friendly, dedicated and well-qualified teachers.

•• Maximum group size for all courses is 18, although the average size is usually lower.

•• Each student on a full-time course has a personal tutor. The tutor will meet you regularly throughout your course and help you to plan your programme and your studies depending on your level and your plans after the course has finished.

•• We encourage you to work towards a range of different English Language examinations, including IELTS and Cambridge Main Suite examinations.

•• Tuition fees do not include the charge for examination entry. Each term, students are expected to buy a course book (The cost is around £25 per book and is not included in the tuition fee).

•• You can start on any Monday throughout the year (minimum 2 weeks), but we recommend that you start at the beginning of a new term.

•• Students should be aged 18 years or over for all courses in the English Language Centre.

•• Students from the European Union have more flexibility with regards to the time spent studying – please contact us for further information.

GENERAL ENGLISHOur General English course is very flexible and suitable for students of all abilities, from beginners to advanced level. You will work on your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills and develop your grammar and vocabulary. It is a perfect option for students who want to improve their English for work, study or travel. You can study for a full academic year or just a few weeks.

You will follow a core General English programme with a choice of additional Special Study modules (for students studying over 15 hours). The choices on offer may include:*

•• Exam skills: these classes focus on exam techniques and the skills you need to be successful in your exam, including IELTS; PET, FCE, CAE or CPE

•• Skills development classes: speaking, listening, reading and writing

•• Business English•• British Studies•• IELTS preparation.

*Not all options are available at all times.

If you are an international student, you can study General English for:

•• Either: 21 hours per week, 18 hours per week, or 15 hours per week.

•• You can also use the Library for extra self-study.•• Individual timetables will be given to students, based on the

course options chosen.

If you are an EU student, you can study General English for:•• Either:

EXAMS

Bradford College is a centre for the Cambridge Main suite examinations. Please note that in order to run an examination we require a minimum number of candidates.

We are not an iELTs testing centre but iELTs examinations can be booked at the nearest iELTs centre.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System)This English examination is used to assess whether a candidate is ready to study or train in English at Further or Higher Education level.

This qualification is accepted by Universities and Colleges in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It is also accepted for courses like nursing and by professional bodies such as the General Medical Council in the UK.

KET (Key English Test)This is a pre-intermediate level/NQF (National Qualifications Framework) Entry 2/A2 on the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference). At this level, learners should have a good basic understanding of English. This is the first level of the Cambridge Main Suite Examinations.

PET (Preliminary English Test)This is an intermediate level/NQF Entry 3/B1 on the CEFR. At this level, learners should be able to cope with English in a range of everyday situations.

FCE (First Certificate in English)This is an upper-intermediate level/NQF Level 1/B2 on the CEFR. It is recognised in commerce and industry in many countries, for example for contact with the public in airlines, catering, banking, etc. It is also recognised by some UK Universities and Colleges for entry onto courses.

CAE (Certificate in Advanced English)This is an advanced level/NQF Level 2/C1 on the CEFR. It indicates a high level of English for professional or study purposes, and is recognised by most UK Universities and Colleges for entry onto courses.

CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English)

ENGLISH PLUS

Our English Plus courses are available from the start of each term. You will study up to 18 hours per week of English and join vocational modules in a selected subject. You need at least an intermediate level of English to join the vocational modules. Vocational subjects on offer include:

•• Art and Design •• Business •• Travel and Tourism •• Hotel and Catering •• Sports and Leisure•• Music Technology •• Beauty Therapy•• Information Technology

We will always try to accommodate students with interests in other areas if your English is of a high enough standard. Please tell us on the application form which vocational area you are interested in joining.

The objective of the course is to give international students the opportunity to learn in a class with British students. This course gives you the experience of British Further and Higher Education, and the chance to meet and work with home students. There is no exam attached to the vocational part of the course.

•• You will follow the core General English programme and choose additional modules. These modules can be made up from the wide range of vocational and Special Study options we offer.

This is the most advanced level/NQF Level 3/C2 on the CEFR. It demonstrates a proficiency level which indicates native or near-native language ability in English.

OUR TEACHERS

Our teachers have a wide range of international experience, ranging from Europe, the Middle East and Far East to South America. All hold specialist EFL qualifications, including Cambridge-accredited qualifications and postgraduate degrees in TEFL, which are all approved by the British Council.

LIBRARY AND RESOURCES You will have access to English Language textbooks, dictionaries and electronic resources at the Bradford College Library. The library can also be used for quiet study.

Our Technology and Media centre has a range of media-related resources, e.g. digital cameras, camcorders, laptops and tablets you can borrow to use for your studies.

STUDENT SECURITY AND WELFAREOur International Admissions Officer is here to help you with all queries related to admissions, enrolment, payment of fees, visa extensions, council tax exemptions, bank account letters and much more.

The Students’ Union is an independent organisation run by students for students. The Union offers a wide range of activities and gives advice and support to students. All students at the College are automatically members of the Union, so get involved!

We are committed to keeping Bradford College a safe place to study, and we have 24-hour security staff available. If you need to speak to Bradford College Security, just call (01274) 433090 – this telephone will be answered 24 hours a day. In the case of an emergency, call 555 from a telephone within the College (if you have an emergency outside of College, please dial 999).

•• Students are responsible for arranging their own insurance cover for health and personal property. Bradford College highly recommends arranging this before you travel.

SOCIAL PROGRAMMEOur social programme is available to students on any English language course. There are social or cultural events every month including occasional all-day excursions at the weekend. All activities are optional.

Example afternoon activities include ten-pin bowling, ice skating, a visit to a local museum or place of interest (e.g. Haworth, Saltaire or Harrogate). Full-day excursions may include:

•• York - Britain’s most visited historical city•• Blackpool - a Lancashire seaside resort with its

famous tower•• Manchester United football ground - a look around

this famous football venue•• Liverpool - with its sea-faring museums and

historical buildings

Prices for the social programme are charged per person, per trip. A half-day excursion will cost approximately £5. Full-day excursions will cost around £20.

You will also have access to Trinity Green, Bradford College’s sports centre. Students are welcome to join various sporting teams such as football, basketball, badminton etc. These are great opportunities to keep fit and make new friends.

ACCOMMODATIONThere is a wide variety of accommodation available in Bradford suitable for international students attending Bradford College. Accommodation Services can provide you with all the advice and guidance you need to make the right decision for your circumstances. Accommodation Services is run by a national charity called UNIPOL.

HOMESTAYThis is the best type of accommodation for anyone studying English, as it gives you the opportunity to practise using the language as you are learning it. You live with your hosts, who may be a local couple, family or single person and will share their home as a “part of the family”. If you choose Homestay, you will be expected to stay for a minimum of one term. After the first term, four weeks’ notice is required if you wish to leave your Homestay.

STAYING IN STUDENT HALLSDoris Birdsall Hall is modern hall with ensuite bedrooms and shared kitchens for 5. The Hall is located next to the Trinity Green building and under a 10 minute walk to the main College campus. Accommodation in Halls is on a self-catering basis only. Meals and snacks are available (Monday to Friday) in self-service cafeterias on the College campus.

OTHER ACCOMMODATIONThe College works closely with a national student housing charity called Unipol Student Homes and through their website College students have access to lots of different types of accommodation from studios to shared houses and flats. •• If you intend to rent your own accommodation during your stay, then paying for it is entirely your responsibility and the College cannot be involved officially or be held responsible in any way.

Once you have applied for your course, you will receive an offer letter from the College (not for visa purposes). You will either need to pay a deposit or provide a sponsorship guarantee letter from your government or employer to receive your Student Visitor Visa (SVV) letter.

•• One or two terms – pay in full on enrolment.•• If you are studying for three terms (the full academic year),

a deposit of £4,500 is required. (This fee is correct at time of printing. Bradford College reserves the right to vary its fees at any time).

ENROLMENTTo enrol on a full-time course, you will need to come to the International Admissions Office on the date your offer letter states.

You need to bring:•• Your passport•• ID card (where applicable)•• Fees (or sponsorship guarantee letter)•• Offer letter•• International students must also bring the original

qualification(s) provided with the application.

We will then arrange an appointment with you for your English to be tested. Please note, you will not be able to enrol without these documents. Sponsored students will not be able to attend classes until the sponsorship guarantee letter has been provided.
