Ms White was inducted into the Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame in September 2011 in recognition of exceptional entrepreneurship and innovation in national retailing, and significant contributions to the community. In December 2011, she was awarded “Doctor of the University” by Griffith University in recognition of her distinguished services to the Pharmacy Industry and to the University. In June 2014, Ms White was appointed as an “Officer of the Order of Australia” for distinguished service to the Pharmacy profession, particularly through contributions to education and retail practices and as a role model for women in business.

Daniel Rifkin is a registered pharmacist, graduating from The University of Sydney with First Class Honours. Daniel is currently completing his Doctorate investigating Pharmacy Leadership, and currently consults to IMS Health on the pharmaceutical industry, and Fitness First with regards to health services. In 2012, Daniel was the winner of the Australian College of Pharmacy IMS Young Pharmacist Innovation Grant and has also been a recent recipient of The University of Sydney, Pharmacy Young Alumni award for Achievement.

Presentation Overview

In his presentation “Australian Pharmacy Leadership-Quo Vadis”, Daniel will explore the current opportunities that exist for pharmacy students and early career pharmacists, with a strong focus on the leadership traits and skills needed to take advantage of the unique opportunities that exist in Australian Pharmacy and what may be required in the future for pharmacists to become more relevant members in the broader health care team. The session will be linked to the smaller and more intimate leadership workshops in the afternoon.

Chris Testa is a local Compounding Pharmacist on the Gold Coast, located in Tugun. Tugun Compounding Pharmacy is the largest compounding pharmacy in Queensland and one of the larger facilities in Australia. Through his work as a compounding pharmacist, Chris as worked closely with a wide range of healthcare professionals including GPs, specialists, veterinarians, dentists and naturopaths.

Brooke Myers is a Pharmacist currently practicing across numerous diverse environments; as Pharmacist Clinical Educator and Clinical Pharmacist at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, as An Accredited Pharmacist with the Australian Association of Consultant along with a position as Conjoint Associate Lecturer at the University of Queensland. She graduated from James Cook University, Townsville in 2006, completed a Graduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy at the University of Queensland in 2010 and is currently undertaking a PhD in Hospital Pharmacy Practice.

Brooke’s involvement in the Pharmacy profession stemmed from days as the National President of the Australian Pharmacy Students Association and lengthy involvement in the International Pharmaceutical Students Association. She has a particular interest in Pharmacy Education that has seen her fulfill volunteering positions on numerous occasions abroad at the University of Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea, the University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka and also on a Medical Mission delivering healthcare to local people in a remote part of the Solomon Islands. Brooke is also involved in community volunteering and fund raising; whereby she has raised over $10 000 for cancer research.

In 2012, Brooke was awarded the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia’s Young Pharmacist of the Year award where she was recognised for striving to advance the pharmacy profession and was selected by the leaders of the profession as epitomising the highest standard of innovation within her practice.

Joyce McSwan (9:30am Tuesday 27th January)

Author of MedRN’s Chronic Pain DVD Series, Joyce McSwan is a multi-award winner for her clinical work in pain management. Joyce brings to the Gold Coast Medicare Local her experience in innovative work in the area of Pain Management within primary health. By background, a Community and Clinical Pharmacist, she has worked in a variety of tertiary, commercial and primary healthcare industries. Her current work focuses on innovating healthcare systems to optimise care for persistent pain sufferers.

Over the past 12 months, Joyce has enriched the Gold Coast region with the successful development of the GCML Persistent Pain program, Turning Pain into Gain which brings to the community a timely resource that assists patients to optimise care and live well despite persistent pain. This primary health collaborative model of care has shown clinical significance in improving the quality of life of those suffering persistent pain.

Dr Grant, a senior lecturer in the School of Pharmacy

at Griffith University, has special interests in antibiotic therapy and the management of infectious diseases. His undergraduate pharmacy and doctoral studies were completed at the University of Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Dr Grant is widely published in a number of fields, including the quality use of medicines device-associated infections, factors influencing the prescribing of antibiotics, and the systemic consequences of bacterial virulence factors. He is an accomplished speaker and has authored papers presented at a range of national and international conferences.

Dr. Davis obtained an undergraduate degree majoring in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from Griffith University in Brisbane, followed by an Honours degree and PhD in synthetic medicinal chemistry from Griffith University, Gold Coast. For 2 years he worked in a biotechnology start-up company developing anti-bacterial drug candidates he co-invented during his PhD. Following this, Dr Davis commenced a position as a Brisbane-based commercialisation company called Uniquest, where he was responsible for seeking venture capital investment to enable the development of new drug and vaccine discoveries, and licensing new drug and vaccine candidates to pharmaceutical companies. In 2009 he then returned to Griffith University as General Manager of the Institute for Glycomics, where his current role is overseeing the Institute’s clinical trials, drug and vaccine technology commercialisation and raising funds for research from industry, government and philanthropy.

In his presentation titled “Experimental Drugs and Vaccines – from Discovery to First-In-Human Trials”, Dr Davis will step through the development path of a vaccine candidate from its conception at Griffith University’s Institute for Glycomics through to testing in humans. The presentation will also provide an insight into the establishment of a human challenge model for one of the world’s most devastating infectious diseases.

In their presentation, Amanda Wheeler and her team will be exploring the role of community pharmacy in supporting mental health consumers and carers, from the point of view of the researcher, pharmacist and mentors involved in the project.

Helena is passionate about reducing mental health stigma and improving opportunities for mental health recovery. Her wish is to combine her lived experience and knowledge to address these areas and provide opportunities for change.

Professor Amanda WheelerAmanda Wheeler is Professor of Mental Health at Griffith University. She is a registered pharmacist who has worked as a health practitioner, educator and researcher in mental health and pharmacy practice for almost 20 years. She is nationally and internationally recognised for her expertise in these areas. Her research focuses on quality improvement, professional practice, workforce development and capacity building. These themes come together with the common goal of improving outcomes for consumers and carers and are integrated across the full scope of her work. Professor Wheeler was awarded her PhD late in her professional career (in 2009) whilst working full-time and followed a non-traditional career path, establishing a highly successful research centre in a public health service in NZ that she directed for over 10 years. The centre was primarily self-funding from the award of competitive and consultancy research grants of over $2.5 million NZD. Since moving to Australia in December 2010 Professor Wheeler’s international profile and reputation has contributed to ongoing success in securing highly competitive national research funding with three grants totalling almost $4 million.

Satish MaganlalSatish Maganlal is a BPharm graduate of University of Queensland, who also holds a post-grad qualification of Graduate Certificate in Clinical Pharmacy. He is a registered pharmacist with 32 years’ experience work in hospital and community pharmacy as well as academia. Satish has been a lecturer & a teaching team member of Professional Pharmacy Practice courses at School of Pharmacy, Griffith University, Gold Coast for the past 9 years. His special research interests include pharmaceutical care in patients with limited English proficiency and acculturation of international students. Satish has ownership experience of 22 years, currently owns a pharmacy and is an accredited pharmacist conducting home medicine reviews.

Lindy Swain (2:45pm Thursday 29th January)

Lindy is a Pharmacist Academic and Rural Pharmacy Liaison Officer at the University Centre for Rural Health in Lismore, NSW, where she conducts education for pharmacy students, medical students, Aboriginal Health Workers and pharmacists. She also teaches Rural Policy, Aboriginal Health and prescribing at UTS, University of SA, UQ and UWS.

Lindy‘s particular area of interest is working with Aboriginal people to assist with medication management, optimising treatment and outcomes. She is a PhD scholar researching “Strategies to Increase Home Medicines Review in Aboriginal communities”. Other projects in which Lindy has recently been involved include the development of the PSA Guide to Providing Pharmacy Services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and a Heart Foundation resource for Aboriginal patients with chronic heart failure, establishment of the North Coast Aboriginal pharmacy assistant traineeship program and the Australia Pharmacy Council’s Remote Rural Pharmacists’ project.

Lindy is also the Director of Rural Policy for the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA). Lindy is an advocate and advisor for rural pharmacy issues, writes government submissions and chairs the PSA Rural Special Interest Group. Lindy is passionate about changing rural service models to include clinical pharmacists, as she believes greater pharmacist involvement in team care arrangements could reduce medication mismanagement and hospitalisations.

Lindy also works as a clinical pharmacist at Bullinah Aboriginal health service and is a tireless advocate for more pharmacists to be working in Aboriginal health. She is a National Rural Health Alliance board member and was announced the 2014 PSA Pharmacist of the Year.

Presentation OverviewDrawing from her long and very varied career in pharmacy, Lindy will describe the challenges and rewards of “Taking the Road Least Travelled”. She will explain why she believes pharmacy’s future is bright and the road ahead paved with adventure and opportunity.

Kirstie-Jane Grenfell is both a community pharmacist and diabetes educator in Berwick and currently facilitates diabetes related workshops for La Trobe University, Monash University and the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia. Kirstie received her pharmacy degree from La Trobe University and completed her Graduate Certificate in Diabetes Education at Deakin University.

She was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 9 years of age and relishes the opportunity to present to her colleagues in such a hands on way and provide them with practical solutions to those problems that patient's may present you with day to day in the pharmacy.

Presently, she is working towards becoming a credentialed diabetes educator. Kirstie runs her own business, Sugar & Life Diabetes Management and works as a diabetes educator within two medical centres.

In this hands on Diabetes Workshop, delegates will be given the opportunity to see and play with different types of insulin devices. Delegates will learn how to use these devices and how to instruct

Some industry players say that ownership is beyond the reach of young pharmacists unless your parents are millionaires. Is it really so, or is it more the case that this is greatest myth circulating in the sector? Attend this workshop to discover the answer – Can you plan to enter into a successful pharmacy partnership before you turn 30?

Kirstie-Jane Grenfell is both a community pharmacist and diabetes educator in Berwick and currently facilitates diabetes related workshops for La Trobe University, Monash University and the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia. Kirstie received her pharmacy degree from La Trobe University and completed her Graduate Certificate in Diabetes Education at Deakin University.

She was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 9 years of age and relishes the opportunity to present to her colleagues in such a hands on way and provide them with practical solutions to those problems that patient's may present you with day to day in the pharmacy.

Presently, she is working towards becoming a credentialed diabetes educator. Kirstie runs her own business, Sugar & Life Diabetes Management and works as a diabetes educator within two medical centres.

In this hands on Diabetes Workshop, delegates will be given the opportunity to see and play with different types of insulin devices. Delegates will learn how to use these devices and how to instruct their patients to use them.
